9. Oasis - The Importance Of Being Idle#1, 12 weeks on chart CHART RUN: (Debut: 17th July 2005) 16- 8-4-4-2-*1*-1-1-4-11-24-34 I sold my soul for the second time 'Cos the man don't pay me I begged my landlord for some more time He said "Son, the bills are waiting" My best friend called me the other night He said "Man - are you crazy" My girlfriend told me to get a life She said "Boy - you lazy" But I don't mind As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine I'll be fine, if you give me a minute, a man's got a limit I can't get a life if my heart's not in it
At #9 it's this work of genius. Inspired by Noel's own laziness, "The Importance Of Being Idle" was for me the highlight of the bands sixth album "Don't Believe The Truth" and went on to spend 3 weeks at the top of my chart at the end of August. This was a different sound for Oasis, and the arrangement just seems to work really well - the different styles flow, it's very catchy and uplifting, the lyrics are great, Noel's voice (including some falsetto) is different but that's great too, and the record is up there with their best. A return to form for the lads from Manchester! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

8. Sugababes - Push The Button#1, 14 weeks on chart *still chartingCHART RUN: (Debut: 18th September 2005) 14- 7-2-*1*-1-2-1-1-2-4-7-17-24-29* I've been waiting patiently for him to come and get it I wonder if he knows that he can say it and I'm with it I knew I had my mind made up from the very beginning Catch this opportunity so you and me could feel it 'cos
If you're ready for me boy You'd better push the button and let me know Before I get the wrong idea and go You're gonna miss the freak that I control
I've always been a fan of the Sugababes, and they've never really failed to impress me. The "Taller In More Ways" comeback of 2005 was no exception. This, the 1st single from it, is an infectious and catchy all-round great pop single. It is sad that Mutya Buena has decided to depart the band, however I'm sure they will continue to have major success- in fact new single "Ugly" is already doing well on my chart and further singles from the album may well do well on the 2006 year-end! 7. Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.#2, 22 weeks on chart CHART RUN: (Debut: 17th April 2005) 25-22- 8-5-3-*2*-4-3-4-6-7-10-13-15-15-17-21-29-36-34-37-37 Windmill, Windmill for the land. up forever hand in hand. Take it all in on your stride. it is sticking, falling down. Love forever love is free. Let's turn forever you and me. Windmill, windmill for the land. everybody in?
The Gorillaz are the only animated, fictional band to make my 2005 year-end, and they do it in style with 2 singles within the Top 10, ("DARE" follows a little later). 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel came back in 2005 with "Demon Days" to follow-up their 2001 self-titled. "Feel Good Inc." spent just 1 week at #2 in May but went on to spend 10 weeks in the Top 10 and 22 weeks on the chart in total.

This will be the last update for a few days as I go home for the holiday period, but I will be back with the Top 5, plus a look forward to what may or may not be big in 2006. For now though, here is #6. 6. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone#3, 20 weeks on chart CHART RUN: (Debut: 26th June 2005) 29-18-12- 4-*3*-3-3-5-6-4-9-13-18-20-27-29-23-30-37-38 Here's the thing We started out friends It was cool, but it was all pretend Yeah, yeah, since you been gone Dedicated, you took the time Wasn't long till I called you mine Yeah, yeah, since you been gone And all you'd ever hear me say Is how I picture me with you That's all you'd ever hear me say
But since you been gone I can breathe for the first time I'm so movin' on, yeah yeah Thanks to you, now I get what I want Since you been gone
This is the highest position that a female artist gets in my year-end, despite not actually reaching #1. Anyway, I loved this track from the moment I first heard it, and I think "Breakaway" truly marks the moment when the American Idol finally moved forward from that image and definately for the better. A fantastic pop song; greatest pop song of the 2000s so far... quite possibly I'd say!

I'm back! Top 5 time.. ;D 5. Gorillaz f/Shaun Ryder - DARE#2, 13 weeks on chart CHART RUN: (Debut: 24th July 2005) 5-*2*-2-3-2-2-2-3-7-16-21-32-39 It's coming up It's coming up It's dare! Here's the 2nd and final Top 10 entry for the animated band Gorillaz at #5. I thought that this was much more catchy than "Feel Good Inc.", but I think overplay eventually killed it for me in the end. The music video for "DARE" includes an appearance by Shaun Ryder (of Happy Mondays fame) as a disembodied giant head kept alive by machinery in Noodle's closet. Rumour has it that the song was originally entitled "It's There" but retitled "Dare" when Shaun Ryder was unable to pronounce "there" with his strong Northern accent. Anyway it was the highest debut of the year and also went on to spend an unequalled 5 weeks at #2. Look out for them on MTV's "Cribs" in the new year; they're rumoured to have accepted an invitation to appear on the show!
