17. The Killers - Smile Like You Mean It#1, 12 weeks on chart Looking back at sunsets on the Eastside We lost track of the time Dreams aren't what they used to be Some things sat by so carelessly
Smile like you mean it Smile like you mean it
Brandon Flowers and co. (otherwise known as Las Vegas band "The Killers") came out of nowhere to produce "Hot Fuss", my favourite album of 2004. This, the 3rd single from it, although not their strongest was their first to hit #1 on my chart- it held fast there for 3 weeks back in April/May. Another single from the album is still to come, but what single is it, and how high does it get !? 16. Athlete - Wires#2, 11 weeks on chart You got wires, going in You got wires, coming out of your skin You got tears, making tracks I got tears, that are scared of the facts
Running down corridors Through automatic doors Got to get to you, got to see this through I see hope is here, in a plastic box I've seen christmas lights, reflect in your eyes
Athlete, if you haven't heard of them, are a band from South London whose debut album "Vehicles and Animals" was really quite good and one of my favourites from 2003; they came back this year with follow-up "Tourist" and first single from it "Wires", was pretty much my soundtrack for the start of the new year. It peaked at #2 for 3 weeks in February. The song was written by the lead singer of the band, about his daughter who was born prematurely. 15. Daniel Powter - Bad Day#3, 16 weeks on chart You stand in the line just to hit a new low You're faking a smile with the coffee to go You tell me your life's been way off line You're falling to pieces everytime And I don't need no carryin' on
Cause you had a bad day You're taking one down You sing a sad song just to turn it around You say you don't know You tell me don't lie You work at a smile and you go for a ride You had a bad day The camera don't lie You're coming back down and you really don't mind You had a bad day You had a bad day
At #15 is a new solo artist from Canada that had massive success with debut album and single during the summer of 2005. Although I'm a little tired with overplay of "Bad Day" it still remains one of my favourites from the summer and will probably remain so for some time to come. This peaked at #3 in August, it may have gone higher had two songs that are higher up in this Top 100 hadn't had so much success.. In the next part of my list, I predict that JessieLou may actually kill me....... No it's not the Crazy Frog!

14. Tony Christie f/Peter Kay - (Is This The Way To) Amarillo#2, 16 weeks on chart Theres a church bell ringing Hear the song of joy that its singing For the sweet Maria And the guy whos coming to see her Just beyond the highway Theres an open plane and it keeps me going Through the wind and rain
Is this the way to Amarillo? Every night ive been hugging my pillow Dreaming dreams of Amarillo And sweet Marie who waits for me Show me the way to Amarillo Ive been weeping like a willow Crying over Amarillo and sweet Marie who waits for me
Yes at #14, its that rival Comic Relief song (to McFly's) that spent 7 weeks at #1 in the official U.K. chart earlier this year. It was just so insanely catchy with the handclapping and "Sha La La..." etc, there was no getting away from it for about a period of 3 months, once someone starting humming, everyone soon was joining in (me included) , plus who could forget that video?!: media.putfile.com/comicrelief_peterkay Anyway, it peaked at #2 for 2 weeks on my chart in April. Sorry Jess.. By the way, for those that are not from the UK, Tony Christie is a popular singer from the 1970s and Peter Kay is a well-known and popular comedian in the UK! ;D 13. Amerie - 1 Thing#1, 13 weeks on chart Oh, been trying to let it go Trying to keep my eyes closed Trying to keep it just like before The times we never even thought to speak Don't wanna tell you what it is Oh wee it felt so serious Got me thinking just too much I wanna set it off, but
It's this 1 thing that's got me trippin It's this 1 thing that's got me trippin (you did) This 1 thing my soul may be feeling It's this 1 thing you did oh oh
"1 Thing" is a mighty slice of drum-soaked R'n'B that could have easily saved Destinys Child's career. For me the song draws similar parallels with Beyoncé's 2003 hit "Crazy In Love" with powerful female vocals and a hard-hitting beat. Definately still worth a play once in a while, but loved it when it was out spending 3 weeks at the top of my chart in June. 12. Stereophonics - Dakota#2, 14 weeks on chart Thinking about thinking of you Summertime think it was June Yeah think it was June Laying back, head on the grass Children grown having some laughs Yeah having some laughs.
Made me feel like the one Made me feel like the one The one
By far one of my favourite Stereophonics songs of all-time now. The start of "Dakota" sounds like nothing they've done before, and originally when I heard it first back in January I thought it was awful.. that soon changed with 3 or 4 listens though and it shot up my chart to peak at #2 for 4 weeks in February/March! Their first and only #1 single in the U.K. too. 11. Jem - They#4, 15 weeks on chart Who made up all the rules We follow them like fools Believe them to be true Don't care to think them through
I'm sorry so sorry I'm sorry it's like this I'm sorry so sorry I'm sorry we do this
Here's yet another new artist for 2005. Jemma Griffiths or Jem as she is otherwise known, originally from Wales but was actually big in the US before she made it here thanks to the use of some of her music in American television shows like the O.C. Debut album "Finally Woken" had some success this year in the U.K. reaching #6, and first single from it "They" which was a very mellow and mysterious sounding song, hung around for a long time in my Top 10 back in the Spring. So the Top 10 is next. One artist, yet to feature on my chart so far has 2 singles in there.. there's some pop, some rock but no dance or R'n'B.

10. Eminem - Like Toy Soldiers#1, 12 weeks on chart CHART RUN: (Debut: 9th Jan 2005) 16- 9-3-*1*-1-1-3-4-4-7-13-22 Step by step, heart to heart, left right left We all fall down like toy soldiers Bit by bit, torn apart, we never win But the battle wages on for toy soldiers
So we kick off the Top 10 with Eminem. This song which samples Martika's 1989 hit "Toy Soldiers" spent 3 weeks as my personal chart #1 during January/February. I really liked the original by Martika so I was always going to like this; despite the awful "Ass Like That" flopping over the summer in the U.S., he's ending the year on a high with the greatest hits album currently selling in huge quantities worldwide. I'm really liking the new single from it "When I'm Gone", so expect to see that on my year end for 2006 possibly!

9. Oasis - The Importance Of Being Idle#1, 12 weeks on chart CHART RUN: (Debut: 17th July 2005) 16- 8-4-4-2-*1*-1-1-4-11-24-34 I sold my soul for the second time 'Cos the man don't pay me I begged my landlord for some more time He said "Son, the bills are waiting" My best friend called me the other night He said "Man - are you crazy" My girlfriend told me to get a life She said "Boy - you lazy" But I don't mind As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine I'll be fine, if you give me a minute, a man's got a limit I can't get a life if my heart's not in it
At #9 it's this work of genius. Inspired by Noel's own laziness, "The Importance Of Being Idle" was for me the highlight of the bands sixth album "Don't Believe The Truth" and went on to spend 3 weeks at the top of my chart at the end of August. This was a different sound for Oasis, and the arrangement just seems to work really well - the different styles flow, it's very catchy and uplifting, the lyrics are great, Noel's voice (including some falsetto) is different but that's great too, and the record is up there with their best. A return to form for the lads from Manchester!
