#33 "Breakaway," Kelly Clarkson Peak: #4 WOC: 19 Spins: 64040 Told you it would be a while until the next AI contestant. While this has the potential to become her biggest hit, it's not her highest-peaking. Both "A Moment Like This" and "Miss Independent" hit #3.

#32 "The First Cut is the Deepest," Sheryl Crow Peak: #11 WOC: 23 Spins: 64748 The highest-ranked song to not go Top 10. That's an improvement over last year. ("Can't Let You Go", which peaked at #13 and finished at #41) She had an outside chance to scrape the Top 10 for at least a week, but being unable to catch "Numb" and being jumped over by "One Call Away" ruined that.

#31 "My Boo," Usher & Alicia Keys Peak: #1 (6) WOC: 16 Spins: 65219 Usher finally appears on the countdown for the first time, and this is Alicia's third appearance. Usher has been the epitome of consistency this year, as all four singles so far have hit #1. What's ironic is before that, he hadn't had a #1 to date.

#30 "Sunshine," Lil' Flip Featuring Lea Peak: #3 WOC: 21 Spins: 65653 Perhaps it is fitting that 3 songs kept this from going higher than #3. (Those 3 were "Pieces of Me", "She Will Be Loved", and "Goodies".)

#29 "Freek-A-Leek," Petey Pablo Peak: #10 WOC: 26 Spins: 67049 This had gradual movement throughout its run, only moving quickly in sudden bursts: 45-44-41-31-27-24-24-22-22-17-17-13-10-10-10-11-12-13-14-16-19-23-24-25-29-31-OFF But the reason it went 31-off was because it narrowly missed #50 that week. ("Live Like You Were Dying", "Burn", and "How Come" were at the bottom three spots before dropping off the week after, and "No Problem" debuted at #47 that week)

#28 "Toxic," Britney Spears Peak: #3 WOC: 20 Spins: 67942 Yes, "Toxic" only finishes at #28 for the year. Having only marginal longevity is what keeps her from finishing higher. This debuted the same week as "Yeah" and chased him all the way up the chart: Yeah: 41-23-17-12- 8- 4- 3- 2-1-1-1 Toxic: 48-37-24-18-14-11-8-5-3-3-3 But "One Call Away" 's interference is what kept her at #3. She seemed to be sticking around well, but all of a sudden her run ended by going 13-18-35-OFF.

#27 "Here Without You," 3 Doors Down Peak: #3 WOC: 26 Spins: 70408 This peaked at #2 and finished at #20 last year. It also set the new chart longevity record in June when its run ended at 46 weeks on. (The previous record holder had been 2001's #1 song, "Hanging By a Moment", at 39 weeks.)

#26 "Turn Me On," Kevin Lyttle Featuring Spragga Benz Peak: #1 (2) WOC: 20 Spins: 70906 Despite peaking at #4 on both Billboard and Pop, this spent 2 weeks at #1 during a rather weak period of the chart. What happened was the #1 spin total had been in decline ever since the fallout of the feud for #1 between "Burn" and "The Reason". "Confessions Part II" followed "The Reason" to #1, but did not reach 4700 spins. Neither did this, but that didn't stop it from knocking Usher off the top. There are more details of this time still to come, in the story of another unlikely #1.

#25 "Move Ya Body," Nina Sky Featuring Jabba Peak: #3 WOC: 22 Spins: 72652 This peaked at #3 at the same time that Kevin Lyttle hit #1. This looked like it might be able to creep in at #1, but the week after it hit #3, it lost its bullet, thus throwing a monkey wrench into the works. Interesting that despite all that, they finish one spot higher than Kevin...

#23 "Slow Motion," Juvenile Featuring Soulja Slim Peak: #5 WOC: 24 Spins: 72997 I'm sure not many expected him to have a bigger hit than "Back That Thang Up", but this year, he pulled it off.

#22 "Confessions Part II," Usher Peak: #1 (2) WOC: 22 Spins: 74195 The second of four from Usher. Only peaking at #6 on the Pop chart couldn't stop this from hitting #1 (see #26 "Turn Me On" for the rest of the story).

#21 "With You," Jessica Simpson Peak: #6 WOC: 23 Spins: 74507 "Irresistible", which peaked at #7, had been her biggest hit on the chart until this came along. (The chart started the last week of May 2000, and "I Wanna Love You Forever" was already long gone by then.)

#20 "Hey Ya," Outkast Peak: #1 (6) WOC: 19 Spins: 74550 Kicking off the Top 20 is last year's #56, "Hey Ya". This was #1 for a total of a then record-tying 10 weeks, and 4 of those were in 2003. This is the highest-ranked song to not last 20 weeks on in 2004.

#19 "Naughty Girl," Beyonce Peak: #1 (1) WOC: 21 Spins: 74895 Beyonce's fourth and final appearance. This song is what kept Usher from getting back-to-back #1s with "Yeah" and "Burn". Another song kept him from trying again with "Burn" and "Confessions Part II". Astute readers know who it is, but if you're not paying attention, you'll have to wait to find out who it was.
