(with Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony)
Biography of the 00s: Mariah Carey is an American hip hop, pop and R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, music video director, and actress. Her debut was in 1990 under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, and she became the first recording artist to have her first five singles top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Following her marriage to Mottola in 1993, a series of hit records established her position as Columbia's highest-selling act. According to Billboard magazine, she is the most successful artist of the 1990s in the United States.
Carey took much more control over her image and music following her separation from Mottola in 1997, and she introduced elements of hip hop into her album material. Her popularity was in decline when she left Columbia in 2001, and she was dropped by Virgin Records the following year after a highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown, and the poor reception of Glitter; her film and soundtrack project. In 2002, Carey signed with Island Records, and after an unsuccessful period, she returned to the forefront of pop music in 2005.
Carey was named the best selling female pop artist of the millennium at the 2000 World Music Awards. She has recorded the most number-one singles for a female solo artist (seventeen) in the United States, where she is the third best-selling female recording artist of all-time, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In addition to her commercial accomplishments, she has earned five Grammy Awards, and is well-known for her vocal range, power, melismatic style, and use of the whistle register. However, some critics have said Carey's efforts to showcase her vocal talents have been at the expense of communicating true emotion through song.
After receiving Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" Award and the World Music Award for "Best-Selling Female Artist of the Millennium", Carey parted from Columbia and signed a contract with EMI's Virgin Records worth a reported US$80 million. She often stated that Columbia had regarded her as a commodity, with her separation from Mottola exacerbating her relations with label executives. Just a few months later, in July 2001, it was widely reported that Carey had suffered a physical and emotional breakdown. She had left messages on her website complaining of being overworked, and her relationship with Luis Miguel was ending. In an interview the following year, she said, "I was with people who didn't really know me, and I had no personal assistant. I'd be doing interviews all day long, getting two hours of sleep a night, if that." During an appearance on MTV's Total Request Live, Carey handed out popsicles to the audience and began what was later described as a "strip tease". By the month's end, she had checked into a hospital, and her publicist announced that Carey was taking a break from public appearances.
Critics panned Glitter, Carey's much delayed semi-autobiographical film, and it was a box office failure. The album Glitter, was inspired by the music of the 1980s and featured collaborations with Rick James and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; it generated her worst showing on the U.S. chart. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch dismissed it as "an absolute mess that'll go down as an annoying blemish on a career that, while not always critically heralded, was at least nearly consistently successful", while Blender magazine opined, "After years of trading her signature flourishes for a radio-ready purr, [Carey]'s left with almost no presence at all." The lead single, "Loverboy" (featuring Cameo), reached number two on the Hot 100 thanks to a price cut, but the album's follow-up singles failed to chart.
Columbia released the low-charting album Greatest Hits shortly after the failure of Glitter, and in early 2002, Virgin bought out Carey's contract for $28 million, creating further negative publicity. Carey said her time at Virgin had been "a complete and total stress-fest ... I made a total snap decision which was based on money, and I never make decisions based on money. I learned a big lesson from that." Later that year, she signed a $20 million contract with Island Records and launched the record label MonarC. To add further to Carey's emotional burdens, her father, with whom she had had little contact since childhood until that year, died of cancer.
Following a well-received supporting role in the 2002 film WiseGirls, Carey released the album Charmbracelet, which she said marked "a new lease on life" for her. Sales of Charmbracelet were moderate, and the quality of Carey's vocals came under severe criticism. The Boston Globe declared the album "the worst of her career, revealing a voice no longer capable of either gravity-defying gymnastics or soft coos", and Rolling Stone commented, "Carey needs bold songs that help her use the power and range for which she is famous. Charmbracelet is like a stream of watercolors that bleed into a puddle of brown." Singles such as "Through the Rain" failed on the charts and on pop radio, which had become less open to maturing "diva" stylists such as Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.
"I Know What You Want", a 2003 Busta Rhymes single on which Carey guest-starred, fared considerably better and reached the U.S. top five. Columbia later included it on the remix collection The Remixes, Carey's lowest selling album. That year, she embarked on the Charmbracelet World Tour and was awarded the Chopard Diamond award for selling over 100 million albums worldwide. She was featured on rapper Jadakiss' 2004 single "U Make Me Wanna", which reached the top ten on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
Carey's tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), contained contributions from producers such as The Neptunes, Kanye West and Carey's longtime collaborator, Jermaine Dupri. Carey said it was "very much like a party record... the process of putting on makeup and getting ready to go out... I wanted to make a record that was reflective of that." The Emancipation of Mimi became 2005's best-selling album in the U.S., and The Guardian reviewer defined it as "cool, focused and urban ... [some of] the first Mariah Carey tunes in years I wouldn't have to be paid to listen to again". The album earned Carey a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album, and the single "We Belong Together" won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. "We Belong Together" held the Hot 100's number-one position for fourteen weeks (Carey's longest run at the top as a solo lead artist), and "Shake It Off" made Carey the only solo female artist to occupy the Hot 100's top two positions simultaneously. "Don't Forget About Us" became her seventeenth number-one in the U.S., tying her with Elvis Presley for the most number-ones by a solo act according to Billboard magazine's revised methodology (their statistician Joel Whitburn still credits Presley with an eighteenth). The Beatles had twenty number-ones. Carey's singles have, collectively, topped the charts for seventy-seven weeks, which places her ahead of The Beatles (fifty-nine weeks), and behind Presley, who topped the combined charts for seventy-nine weeks. Carey has also had notable success on international charts, though not to the same degree as her native America. Thus far, she has had two number-one singles in Britain, two in Australia, and six in Canada. Carey's highest-charting single in Japan peaked at number-two.
Carey began a concert tour, The Adventures of Mimi Tour, in mid-2006. She appeared on the cover of the March 2007 edition of Playboy magazine on a non-nude photo session. In early 2007, she was featured with Bow Wow on the Bone Thugs-n-Harmony single "Lil' L.O.V.E.". Later in the year, Carey received a "recording star" on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she will be inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame on October 21, 2007.
According to an interview with Entertainment Tonight in mid-2006, she had already begun work on her next studio album. According to a November 2006 Reuters report, Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris has stated that Carey will release two albums in 2007.

The only 00's Mariah stuff I've really liked was some of the "Mimi" stuff, and even THAT was hit or miss for me!
She was MUCH better generally in the 90's... this decade has been inconsistent for her.

#36. 3 Doors Down

Biggest Album of the 00s: The Better Life
Other Singles from the 00s: Kryptonite, Loser, Duck And Run, Be Like That, When I'm Gone, The Road I'm On, Away From The Sun, Let Me Go, Behind Those Eyes, Live For Today, Here By Me & Landing In London (featuring Bob Seger).
Biography of the 00s: 3 Doors Down is an American alternative rock band formed in Escatawpa, Mississippi in 1994 by Brad Arnold (vocals and drums), Matt Roberts (guitar) and Todd Harrell (bass). The band signed to Universal Records after the success of their song "Kryptonite". The band has since sold well over 12 million albums since their debut album, The Better Life, was released in 2000. They also perform more than 300 concerts a year and have performed with other well-known artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Staind on several occasions.
Brad Arnold is the vocalist for the band and played the drums on the studio recording of their album The Better Life. He started singing full time for the band after a concert where no one else would sing except for him and he ended up enjoying it.
The Better Life was released in 2000 and has since been certified 6x Platinum thanks to the international hit singles, "Kryptonite", "Loser", and "Duck and Run". The song "Be Like That" was rerecorded for the 2001 film American Pie 2, with alternate lyrics for the first 2 lines. This version is known as "The American Pie 2 Edit".
The band's second studio album, Away from the Sun, was released in 2002 and since been certified 4x Platinum in the United States and Platinum in Australia. "Here Without You" and "When I'm Gone" proved to be the most successful singles from that album. "The Road I'm On" and "Away from the Sun" also charted with less success.
Session drummer Josh Freese contributed drums for Away from the Sun. Also, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson produced and played on 3 tracks for the record, "Dangerous Game", "Dead Love", and "Wasted Me" (only "Dangerous Game" appeared on the album). Daniel Adair was the drummer on Seventeen Days and during the Away from the Sun tour.
Since 2003, the band has held a "3 Doors Down and Friends" benefit, through the Better Life Foundation. In 2006, the concernt was held Dec. 2, at the Mobile Convention Center, with proceeds to benefit Hurricane Katrina survivors.
The band released a live EP Another 700 Miles in 2003 which consists of part of a live performance by the band on their Away from the Sun tour in Chicago. Another 700 Miles has since been certified Gold.
The band's latest release, 2005's Seventeen Days, has since been certified Platinum. "Let Me Go" and "Behind Those Eyes" charted with the most success. "Live for Today", "Landing in London" (on which Bob Seger provided back-up vocals and guitar), and "Here by Me" were also released as singles.
During the Seventeen Days tour, the band appeared alongside the legendary southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Also, In 2005 the band released a "live" DVD titled "Away from the Sun Live from Houston, Texas". The DVD was produced and directed by Academy Award nominated Alex Gibney and Doug Biro. It was released by Monster Music in 2005.
Greg Upchurch, formerly of Puddle of Mudd, is the drummer who replaced Daniel Adair in 2005. Adair left to be the drummer for Nickelback.

#35. Ashanti
Biggest Hit of the 00s: Foolish
Biggest Album of the 00s: Ashanti
Other Singles from the 00s: Always On Time (with Ja Rule), What's Luv (with Fat Joe), Happy, Down 4 U (with Irv Gotti & Ja Rule), Baby, Mesmerize (with Ja Rule), Rock Wit U (Awww Baby), Into You (with Fabolous), Rain On Me, Southside (with Lloyd), Wonderful (with Ja Rule & R. Kelly), Only U, Don't Let Them, Still On It (featuring Paul Wall & Method Man), Pac's Life (with 2Pac), Put A Little (with Jagged Edge) & Hey Baby (After The Club).
Biography of the 00s: Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas better known as Ashanti, is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, dancer, model, and fashion designer who rose to fame in the early 2000s.
She is most famous for her eponymous Grammy Award-winning debut album Ashanti which featured the hit song "Foolish", and sold a record-breaking 503,000 copies (gold) in its first week of release in the USA in April 2002. In the same week, she became the first female performer to simultaneously hold the top two places on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with "Foolish", and "What's Luv" (with Fat Joe). She broke records again by having three Top Ten songs (Foolish, What's Luv, and Always on Time (with Ja Rule)) on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the same week, being the first female to accomplish this feat and being second only to The Beatles. Ashanti also wrote and sang background on the song "Ain't It Funny" (Murder Remix) sung by Jennifer Lopez which was also in the top 10 charts at the same time as "Foolish", "Always on Time" (with Ja Rule), and "What's Luv" (with Fat Joe). In 2002, she was acclaimed as the "Princess of Hip Hop and R&B." By 2007 Ashanti had sold more than 7 million albums in the U.S., and more than 12 million albums worldwide.
Ashanti cites Mary J. Blige, Ella Fitzgerald, and Blue Magic as her musical influences. She is currently working on her fourth studio album entitled The Declaration, which is due out in December of 2007. Ashanti appeared in the Sci-Fi horror thriller Resident Evil: Extinction as a fire-powered Florence Nightingale named Nurse Betty. She ranked #46 on VH1's "50 Greatest Women Of The Video Era" show list.
It was when she was noticed by Murder Inc. mastermind Irv Gotti that Ashanti began to blossom. Gotti noted her dancing and acting abilities in addition to her vocal skills. In 2001, Ashanti was first featured as a background vocalist on rapper Big Pun's song "How We Roll". In the same year, Ashanti was featured on fellow labelmate Cadillac Tah's singles "Pov City Anthem" and "Just Like a Thug". She also appeared on the 2001 The Fast and the Furious soundtrack as a featured artist on Vita's 2001 hip hop remake of Madonna's "Justify My Love" and on the solo track "When a Man Does Wrong". She appeared as a background vocalist on "I'm Real" (Murder remix), a collaboration by labelmate Ja Rule and Jennifer Lopez (she also appeared in the music video for "Aint It Funny" (Murder remix), the second duet between Lopez and Rule, for which she also sang background vocals on), and was featured on Fat Joe's "What's Luv?" and Ja Rule's "Always on Time". "What's Luv?" and "Always on Time" were released simultaneously and became two of the biggest hit songs of 2002. Ashanti became the first female to occupy the top two positions on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart when "Always on Time" and "What's Luv?" were number one and number two respectively.
Following the success of her collaborations with Ja Rule and Fat Joe, Ashanti released her debut single, "Foolish", which contained a sample of the 1983 song "Stay With Me" by DeBarge (also utilized by The Notorious B.I.G. in his 1995 hit "One More Chance"). This is her biggest song to date, spending 10 weeks atop of the billboard hot 100. She became the second artist (after The Beatles) to have their first three chart entries in the top ten of the Hot 100 simultaneously. Ashanti's self-titled debut album, Ashanti, was released on Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. record label in April 12, 2002. It debuted at number-one on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart, and stayed there for 6 weeks, selling over 503,000 copies in its first week (the most successful first week debut sales for any female R&B artist). The album has been certified 3x platinum in the U.S and platinum (300,000 copies) in the UK. The album has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Ashanti wrote or co-wrote all 12 songs on the album, most written on the spot in the studio.
Ashanti's follow-up singles, "Happy" and "Baby", were not as successful as her debut single but did peak in the top ten and top twenty in the U.S. respectively. During the summer of 2002, Ashanti appeared on Ja Rule's "Down 4 U" with labelmates, female rappers Vita and Charli Baltimore. The song appeared on a Murder Inc. compilation titled Irv Gotti Presents The Inc. Ashanti's debut album earned her many awards including eight Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, and a Grammy Award.
However, the most prestigious award she won in 2002 was also the most controversial. When it was announced that Ashanti would receive the Soul Train Aretha Franklin Award for "Entertainer of the Year"(After receiving this prestigious award Ashanti was proclaimed the Princess of R&B/Hip-Hop Soul) a high school boy in California took offense and started an on-line petition against her. He explained to The Seattle Times that she was too new to deserve the award and "she lacks stage presence in the majority of her performances." Nearly 30,000 people agreed with him, signing the petition. Many pointed out that established artists such as Mary J. Blige and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott or critically-acclaimed singers like Alicia Keys and India.Arie were more deserving of an award that carries the name of a musical legend. Despite the petition, the Soul Train committee and Don Cornelius stuck by their decision and Ashanti. Ashanti was applauded by her musical peers as she entered the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to accept her award and she was supported onstage by legendary singer Patti LaBelle who stated "she's a baby and we have to support our babies."
In September 2002, Ashanti and her sister Kenashia appeared on the first DisneyMania CD, which was released under Walt Disney Records. The album featured contemporary Disney classics. Ashanti & her sister sang "Colors of the Wind" from the Disney movie Pocahontas. The album was considered a commercial success, achieving platinum certification in February 2003.
Ashanti's global appeal became very apparent, as FHM credited her as the "Sexiest Woman in Music" in 2002. In 2003, Ja Rule and Ashanti collaborated on another hit song, "Mesmerize." Its music video was a parody of a scene from the film Grease.
In July 2003, Ashanti released her second album Chapter II. It debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 323,000 in the U.S. and remained at the top of the charts for 2 weeks. According to Billboard magazine, the album has been certified Platinum (1.5 million copies) in the U.S. and Platinum(300,000) in the UK. Chapter II's first single, "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)", became a hit, peaking at number-two on the Billboard Hot 100. Its steamy video, which showed Ashanti in a bikini frolicking on a beach and riding an elephant named Bubbles, was nominated for two 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. A remix of the song contained interpolations of Michael Jackson's "Rock with You".
The second single, "Rain on Me," reached the top ten of the Hot 100. In the "Rain on Me" mini-movie music video directed by Hype Williams and co-starring Larenz Tate, Ashanti portrays a troubled young woman in an abusive relationship. Ashanti's powerful song and lyrics combined with William's visuals to impart the power and horror of the cycle of domestic violence. Ashanti partnered with LidRock to distribute this mini-movie using LidRock's unique platform. This promotion, in conjunction with heavy rotation on MTV, BET, and other music video programs, has brought this film and her cause to the attention of millions of fans. It has also helped to raise money for the cause with proceeds from the $5 mini-disc going toward helping to stop domestic violence.
The album has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. . Ashanti was scheduled to join Mariah Carey on her "Charmbracelet" US tour but due to schedule issues she was the opening act for R.Kelly's five-date tour in summer 2003 instead.
In May 2003, Ashanti appeared on VH1 Divas and performed her single "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)." She also participated in duets with Stevie Wonder (who later gave her the nickname Little Libra) performing "Do I Do," and the Isley Brothers performing "That Lady".
In November 2003, Douglas' Christmas album, Ashanti's Christmas was released. The album contained almost an equal amount of original songs to Christmas standards. With only the support of a Christmas Melody music video, the album debuted and peaked at number 6 on The Billboard 200 and number 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart selling just around 150,000 copies by the end of 2003(Certified Gold). The promotional Christmas Melody music video continues to be a staple of VH1 Soul and MTV Hits whenever the Holiday season begins.
In 2004, Ashanti was invited back to perform at VH1's Divas 2004. She appeared on stage with Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Jessica Simpson, and others. She performed Diana Ross' smash hit "I'm Coming Out", and she performed a soulful rendition of Chaka Khan's funk driven hit "Ain't Nobody."
Later that year, Ashanti appeared on three collaborations. "Southside," with male R&B newcomer and labelmate Lloyd, was released as his debut single and was a moderate hit. "Wonderful" with Ja Rule and R.Kelly peaked at number five in the U.S and at number one in the U.K. "Jimmy Choo" with rapper Shyne was another modest hit reaching number 55 on the billboard Hot R&B songs chart.
Alongside artist such as Wyclef Jean, Mary J. Blige, Eve, Brandy, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Missy Elliott, and many others, Ashanti participated in a cover of the classic "Wake Up Everybody" in support of ACT, the left-leaning political action committee.
On December 14, 2004, Ashanti released her third studio album, Concrete Rose, from which the title took on Tupac Shakur's pseudonym "The Rose That Grew From Concrete". The album debuted at number seven in the U.S with first week sales of 254,000, making this her first studio CD to not debut at number one. The first single, "Only U," reached thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and became her biggest hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number two. Exactly one month after its release, the album was certified platinum and the single "Only U" was certified Gold in March 2005. In Mid March, Ashanti released her second and final single from the album entitled "Don't Let Them". Although Ashanti was praised by critiques for improved vocals on this solid ballad, she didn't garner much fan support after Def Jam refused to pay for the video for the fan favored and original second single, "Don't Leave Me Alone" due to Irv Gotti's legal troubles with his money laundering trial. The singer came out of pocket to deliver the second single and video to her fans, thus Gotti stepping up to become the clip's director. The single was only released in the U.S., where it failed to chart, and the UK, reaching the Number 35 in the first week, but soon disappeared off the U.K. charts.
Also, for a limited time after the release of Concrete Rose, Ashanti released the DVD Ashanti: The Making Of A Star. This deluxe DVD includes exclusive photo and video shoot footage, music from her multi-platinum albums Ashanti, Chapter II plus Concrete Rose, special concert footage, unreleased childhood school performances and behind-the-scenes interviews with family, friends, and fans. The DVD was also repackaged along with Coach Carter.
On December 6, 2005, Ashanti released a remix album of Concrete Rose titled Collectables by Ashanti. The album features six remixes of previously released tracks and four newly recorded songs, including the single "Still on It", which featured rappers Paul Wall and Method Man. The album, was only an opportunity for her to fulfill her contract with Def Jam (and have the option of working with another label), managing to debut at #59 on the Billboard 200.
Ashanti's next album has been confirmed by an interview with Billboard Magazine as being entitled The Declaration. This will be Ashanti's fourth studio album. Ashanti says her new album represents her sense of freedom at this stage in her career. "I'm steering my own ship and taking the lead on everything. You can definitely hear the growth; I'm working with producers I've never worked with before." Those producers include Polow Da Don, and Babyface. In past interviews, Ashanti, as well as HUFF Events & PR, the firm responsible for Douglas' promotional work, have confirmed that the singer has also worked with producers Pharrell Williams, Dr. Dre, Swizz Beats, Ron "Neff-U" Feemstar and L. T. Hutton as well as collaborated with fellow singer Robin Thicke, and rappers Nelly & Snoop Dogg for the new album. In January 2007, a buzz track leaked called "You Can't Deny It", featuring Jim Jones as did a feature with longtime collaborator and producer 7 Aurelius titled "My Number Babe", which is scheduled to be on the producers' debut CD entitled Channel 7. The Declaration is due December 4th. On September 12, 2007, Ashanti announced on The Sauce that the official first single from her new album is entitled "Hey Babe (After The Club)". The singer noted that the song had recently been mastered and was sent to universal, who is behind the single choice.
In April 2007, Irv Gotti appeared in an interview with DJ FlexMaster Flex and addressed the fact that Ashanti has ventured out and acquired producers and collaborations primarily outside The Inc. for the first time by saying, "she's having her little Janet Jackson "Control" moment. Every artist has their moment when they feel they need to take over their own music. This is hers."
In September 2007, Irv Gotti slammed Ashanti on Wendy Williams Show on the radio. Saying she wasn't there for him or the record label during their hard times and that she was "Unfatihful" to the record label. He also hinted that him and Ashanti had an intimate relationship when she was first signed to the label, and also that Ashanti knew Irv was already married during the alleged affair. This came as a shocker to many of Ashanti's fans and the media, because they were always portrayed as a "family" and were very close. Ashanti considered Irv Gotti, Chris Gotti (Irv's Brother) and Ja Rule her brothers. When Ashanti was asked about these allegations, she simply replied "No Comment". It seems as if Ashanti is still signed to The Inc. due to a contract, and will be releasing her much anticipated fourth studio album titled, The Declaration due out on December 4th through The Inc./Universal Motown Records. Ashanti's Album has now been pushed to December 11th which was scheduled to go head to head with Bow wow and Omarion's Face Off Album but their's was recently pushed back til Feb. 2008
Ashanti is featured on a new song by R&B group Jagged Edge entitled "Put a Little Umph In It." It is the first single on Jagged Edge's new album Baby Making Project. 'Put A Little Umph In it' is currently #61 on the Hip-Hop/R&B Billboard charts. Ashanti's Album has now been pushed to December 11th.

The album was an international success, supported by three international singles: "I'm like a Bird", "Turn off the Light", and "...On the Radio (Remember the Days)". It received four Grammy nominations in 2002, and her debut single won for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Furtado's work was also critically acclaimed for her innovative mixture of various genres and sounds. Slant magazine called the album "a delightful and refreshing antidote to the army of 'pop princesses' and rap-metal bands that had taken over popular music at the turn of the millennium."
The sound of the album was strongly influenced by musicians who had traversed cultures and "the challenge of making heartfelt, emotional music that's upbeat and hopeful." According to Maclean's magazine, Whoa, Nelly! had sold five million copies worldwide as of August 2006.
The song "Scared of You" has portions of the song in Portuguese, while "Onde Estás" is entirely in Portuguese, reflecting Furtado's Portuguese heritage.
Furtado's second album, Folklore, was released in November 2003. The final track on the album, "Childhood Dreams", was dedicated to her daughter, Nevis. The album includes the single "Força" (meaning "strength" or "carry on" in Portuguese), the official anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship. Furtado performed this song in Lisbon at the championship's final, in which the Portugal national team played. Other singles included "Powerless (Say What You Want)" and the ballad "Try". The album was not as successful as her debut, partly due to the album's less "poppy" sound, but also due to changes at DreamWorks Records. DreamWorks had just been sold to Universal Music Group. In 2005, DreamWorks Records, along with many of its artists including Furtado, were absorbed into Geffen Records.
Furtado's third album was released in June 2006. She named it Loose after the spontaneous, creative decisions she made while creating the album. In this album, primarily produced by Timbaland, Furtado experiments with sounds from R&B, hip hop, and 80s music. She categorized the album's sound as punk-hop, described as "modern, poppy, spooky" and as having "a mysterious, after-midnight vibe... extremely visceral". She attributed the youthful sound of the album to the presence of her two-year old daughter. Four lead singles were released in different regions of the world: the Spanish reggaeton-influenced "No Hay Igual" (featuring Calle 13), the hip-hop "Promiscuous" (featuring Timbaland), for which she won a 2006 Billboard Music Award for Pop Single of the Year, the Latin "Te Busqué" (featuring Juanes), and the dark pop single "Maneater". Loose has become the most successful album of Furtado's career so far. It reached number-one in several countries including the United States and Canada, and it included the hit singles "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Te Busqué", "Say It Right", and "All Good Things (Come to an End)". The album received generally positive reviews from critics, with some citing the "revitalising" effect of Timbaland on Furtado's music, and others calling it "slick, smart and surprising." Some have labeled her a "sell out" for seemingly abandoning her folk and rock roots in favor of hip hop and R&B, while others have criticized her for attempting to "sex up" her music and appearance to sell more records. Nonetheless, the album has fared well on the mainstream market, especially in Canada, where the album was certified 4x platinum in May 2007. In 2007, Furtado and Justin Timberlake were featured on Timbaland's single "Give It to Me", which became her third number-one single in the U.S. and second in the UK. On February 16, 2007, Furtado embarked on the Get Loose Tour. She returned in March 2007 to her hometown of Victoria, British Columbia to perform a concert at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre. In honor of her visit, local leaders officially proclaimed March 21, 2007, the first day of spring, as Nelly Furtado Day. On April 1, 2007, Furtado was a performer at and host of the 2007 Juno Awards in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She won all five awards for which she was nominated, including "Album of the Year" and "Single of the Year". Furtado appeared on stage at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium in London on July 1, 2007, where she performed "Say It Right", "Maneater", and "I'm like a Bird". In 2007, Furtado, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake were featured on Lil Wayne's upcoming album Tha Carter III. Furtado also appeared in the video for Nickelback's Rockstar. In September, 2007, MTV:Buzzworthy chose Furtado as the Artist of the Week, and gave an exclusive freestyle performance of "Going Away" with the Somalian-Canadian rapper K'naan. On September 9, 2007, Furtado performed at the MTV Video Music Awards awards with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, where she sang Do It mixed with The Way I Are, LoveStoned and Give It to Me.
