Week 453 – November 2^nd , 2019

Sometimes things can change a little bit faster than expected. Italian singer Emma did the last step this week and so “Io sono bella” (#1, “I am beautiful”) reached the top spot with this edition. The last time when Emma had a #1 hit had been back in 2018 with “Mi parli piano” (“Talk to me slowly”). Now she returns very strong with this beautiful single. Pink and Cash Cash dropped one spot with their recent #1 “Can we pretend” (#2). Also down one spot is “Higher love” (#3) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. Swapping spots are “Besser bei dir” (#4, “Better with you”) by Jeanette Biedermann and “Büdl an da Wond” (#5, “Picture on the wall”).

Directly behind the Top 5 is “Castles” (#6) by British singer Freya Ridings. Her song recently got some airplay here in Austria, which lead her to a chart debut at #62. One spot behind you can find “Alles Gute” (#7, “Wishing you well”) by Austrian singer Mathea who started her career earlier this year with “2x”. Unfortunately “Alles Gute” isn’t really doing well in Austria while her 2nd single “Chaos” (I’ve never charted this song) is still at #23 in its 18th week and “2x” re-entered the Austrian chart for a 39th charting week. Lithuania and Sweden are entering this week’s Top 10 with “Figure it out” (#8). For Jovani and Youth Appeal this is their first Top 10 hit with the first chart appearance. Up one spot is Gromee with “Love you better” (#9) while Clara Mae is rounding out this week’s Top 10 with her smash “Loved you once” (#10).

Irish band The Script are doing well with their recent single “The last time” (#40). This song not only reached the Top 50 for the first time, but it is also the greatest gainer of the week after it climbed up 15 spots. For the highest debut you have to look down the chart. It is by Spanish singer Aitana. Her single “Con la miel en los labios” (#78, “With honey on the lips”) finally got its debut. This song debuted in Spain at #6 back in June. One spot behind she debuts with another song by her. It is “Nada sale mal” (#79, “Nothing goes wrong”). This song has also debuted with in the Top 10 in Spain (at #4 in April). As I bought her album this song should do well.

Other debuts are “Drinking alone” (#92) by Carrie Underwood, “Country girls” (#94) by Jess Moskaluke, “Angel with tattoos” (#96) by Skylar Grey, “This is real” (#96) by Jax Jones feat. Ella Henderson, “Bullet with butterfly wings” (#97 – a Smashing Pumpkin) by MØ feat. Walshy Fire and “What she wants tonight” (#98) by Luke Bryan.

Sorry for the delay. My parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and so I hadn't time to post the chart earlier.

The year is going to its end very fast, but my listening habits are cooling down a little bit. Only six songs debut this week and the Top 10 is stable. Let’s start with the top song. It is still “Io sono bella” (#1, “I am beautiful”) by Emma. I really love this song and because of the fact that the Top 10 is growing older and older this song has the chance to stay a little bit longer. “Can we pretend” (#2) by Pink feat. Cash Cash still is at the runner’s up spot and also holding its Top 3 spot is “Higher love” (#3) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. These aren’t the only songs holding their spots within the Top 10. “Besser bei dir” (#4) by Jeanette Biedermann and “Büdl an da Wond” (#5, “Picture on the wall”) by Edmund are also non-moving songs.

So you see the Top 5 didn’t move. Let’s see what happened in the rest of the Top 10. Still at #6 is “Castles” by Freya Ridings. Then there is the first change. Up one spot is “Figure it out” (#7) by Jovanni feat. Youth Appeal. They swapped spots with “Alles Gute” (#8, “Whising you well”) by Mathea. Next in line is the 7th non-moving song within the Top 10. It is “Love you better” (#9) by Gromee. Finally there is one new song in this section. It is “Lose you to love me” (#10) by Selena Gomez.

The greatest gainer of the week is “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer?” (#18, “Are you ready for the love with me?”) by Swiss band Hecht. This song climbed up 21 spots and it is the band’s first Top 20 hit with the 2nd chart appearance. The highest debut is “Used to love” (#64) by Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis. Emma is holding the top spot for a third week, but “Io sono bella” (#1, “I am beautiful”) is under pressure. “Io sono bella” is the first single from her new album “Fortuna” which she recently released and I will soon buy it. This single is definitely a good start for this new album. Up one spot is long time #1 “Higher love” (#2) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. Directly behind is Selena Gomez with her new one “Lose you to love me” (#3). This song climbed up seven spots and is to be expected to reach #1 within the next two weeks or so. The next two songs also dropped one spots. These are “Büdl an da Wond” (#6, “Picture on the wall”) by Edmund and “Castles” (#7) by Freya Ridings. 10 spots up and into the Top 10 is Swiss dialect pop by Hecht. They reached the Top 10 for the first time in their career with “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer?” (#8, “Are you ready for the love with me?”). Next in line is “Figure it out” (#9) by Jovani feat. Youth Appeal which dropped two spots. Also dropping down two spots is “Alles Gute” (#10, “Wishing you well”) by Austrian singer Mathea.

The greatest gainer of the week is “To the wire” (#32) by Julian Jordan which climbed up 23 spots. Although there is a massive amount of new songs the highest debut only can be found outside the Top 60. Meghan Trainor did best with “Hurt me” (#70). Week 456 – November 23 ^rd , 2019

An intense music week is ending now. Emma is holding the top spot for a fourth week with “Io sono bella” (#1, “I am beautiful”) from her new album “Fortuna”. I gave this album a shot and I’ve to admit that this one is good, but not as brilliant as “Schiena” (“Back”) is in my eyes. I will definitely by this one which will be the third non-English album I’m going buy this year. Leading the rest of the pack is Selena Gomez. Her song “Lose you to love me” (#2) climbed up one spot. This song switched the spot with 7 times #1 “Higher love” (#3) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. Their song is now in its 13th week within the Top 3 which is absolutely astonishing. Next in line is “Can we pretend” (#4) by Pink feat. Cash Cash. Up three spots and into the Top 5 is Swiss dialect pop by Hecht. It is definitely a surprise that their song “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer?” (#5, “Are you ready for the love with me?”) entered the Top 5 and because of the fact that most of the songs are really “old” in this part of the chart there is a big chance for this song entering the Top 3.

“Besser mit dir” (#6, “Better with you”) by Jeanette Biedermann left the Top 5 after dropping one spot. Also down one spot are “Büdl an da Wond” (#7, “Picture on the wall”) by Edmund and “Castles” (#8) by Freya Ridings. Dance pop single “Figure it out” (#9) by Lithuanian DJ Jovanni feat. Swedish act Youth Appeal is holding its spot. This week’s Top 10 is rounded out with the only new song within the Top 10. “When we were still young” (#10) by Klaas finally entered this part of the chart in its 9th week on chart. This song replaced Mathea’s “Alles Gute” (#11, “Wishing you well”).

Over the last weeks there haven’t been a lot of new entries. This week is different. 19 songs are entering the chart which is near the record. But before I write something about the highest debut I will lead your attention to this week’s greatest gainer. Italian singer Alice Pisano debuted two weeks ago with a cover of an A-Ha classic. This week “Take on me” (#59) sprinted up the chart from outside the Top 80 into the Top 60. This cover has the chance to reach a notable spot. So let’s talk about this week’s highest debut. No, it isn’t Kate Voegele’s new single “French” which has been released on Thursday and I first listened to on Saturday. Maybe this song will be here next week. The highest debut is the new single by Canadian singer Lennon Stella. Her song “Kissing other people” (#41) missed the Top 40 by one spot. I really like this song about the ending of a relationship. This one could be the one which brings her into the Top 10. Although I bought and charted her “Love, me”-EP this one could be her signature song for me. “Kissing other people” is also the only Top 50 debut.

The 2nd best debut is by British singer HRVY. I’ve charted him twice back in 2018. “Talk to ya” peaked at #91 and “Personal” at #86. So his new one “Million ways” (#52) outperformed his previous chart hits in its first week on chart. This is a good start and I believe that this song will end in the Top 30 at least. One spot behind there is country pop by Jordan Davis. On his new single “Cool anymore” (#52) he is featuring singer Julia Michaels. Julia Michaels seems to be really busy this year. I’ve the feeling the she is releasing song after song after song. At the moment I’m also charting her with her solo single “If you need me” (#23). Also debuting in the Top 60 is US singer Teddy Swims. He is known for his cover versions. After YouTube lead me to one of his covers I decided to chart “I can’t make you love me” (#60) which is a cover of a Top 20 hit by Bonnie Raitt. As she hasn’t been very popular in Austria – in Germany she had four songs within the Top 100, but no Top 50 hit and in Austria she has never charted – I’ve not known this particular song. I love this song and his voice so I believe this one could do very well. This could bring two covers “Take on me” by Alice Pisano and “I can’t make you love me” into the Top 10 if everything works out well.

One spot behind this cover song their you can find the new single by German singer Nico Santos. His song “Play with fire” (#61) is his solo chart debut. He recently charted with the duet “Better” with Lena. Next in line is the chart debut “Love don’t hate it” (#62) by singer Duncan Laurence. In May he won the Eurovision Song Contest with “Aracade” which I never charted. Now he debuts with the follow up. One spot behind you can find the next debut which is by Spanish-British singer Au/Ra who is raised in Antigua. Her song “Ghost” (#63) with Alan Walker is part of the soundtrack “Death stranding” for the PC game of the same name. Another debut out of this soundtrack is “Sing to me” (#95) by MISSIO. “Ghost” is followed by three debuts by LANY who are debuting “Malibu nights” (#64), “Run” (#65) and “Valentine’s day” (#66). The title track of their last album “Malibu nights” is ready for a big shot and I believe that this one could continue their success with this album.

Week 457 – November 30 ^th , 2019

Every year my students asking me what music I’m listening to. Well pretty everything with some exceptions. This week I prefer Selena Gomez’s new hit single "Lose“you to love me” (#1). This song climbed up one spot and dethroned Emma’s “Io sono bella” (#2, “I am beautiful”). Still at the podium is “Higher love” (#3) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. This song is now in its 18th week on chart, but there is one song in the Top 10 which can be found longer on the chart. Up one spot is Swiss dialect pop by Hecht. Their song “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer?” (#4, “Are you ready for the love with me?”) is definitely a song which I’ve not seen reaching such a good spot, but I love this song and maybe Hecht will enter the Top 3. Swapping the spot with Hecht’s song about the love start is “Can we pretend” (#5) by Pink feat. Cash Cash.

The next three songs haven’t moved. So “Besser mit dir” (#6, “Better with you”) by Jeanette Biedermann is still directly behind the Top 5. One spot behind is Austro pop by Edmund. Their breakup song “Büdl an da Wond” (#7, “Picture on the wall”) is one of the best Austro pop songs over the last years and it is such a shame that they haven’t any success. Next in line is the song with 19 weeks on chart. It is Freya Ridings “Castles” (#8). I’m still playing the song on heavy rotation and it seems that there won’t be an end until this year is ending. By the way I’m looking forward to present you all my year-end countdown for 2019. OK these are the songs which are still in the Top 10. Now I will present you two songs which are new in this section. The higher ranked one is “To the wire” (#9) by Julian Jordan. This DJ from the Netherlands is releasing single over single since 2011, but “To the wire” is his first chart hit. Back in 2012 his song “Kangaroo” reached #43 on the US dance chart. This has been his only chart success so far. The other new song is “The last time” (#10) by Irish band The Script.

Although the chart is growing old there are some fresh and young songs which are climbing up the chart. One of these songs is “Malibu nights” (#44). This particular LANY song climbed up 20 spots and should reach the Top 40 by next week. Finally there is a new song by Kate Voegele. Back in 2018 I listened to her more than 700 times, but because of fact that there hasn’t been a new song out by her this year is a little bit weak. Now she returns strong with her song “French” (#31). With “French” she has done something different than on her last album, but still absolutely enjoyable. I’m expecting that “French” is doing well over the next weeks.

Other new entries are “Amour d’un soir” (#79, “One night’s love”) and “Carte blanche” (#80) by Cœur de Pirate, “Spark” (#86) by Taeyeon, “In meiner Erinnerung” (#88, “In my memory”) by Silbermond, “The end” (#89) by MisterWives, “Meine 3 Minuten” (#90, “My three minutes”) by Freschta Akbarzada feat. Sido, “Warte mal” (#91 “Wait a moment”) by Fidi Steinbeck feat. Week 458 – December 7^th , 2019

Selena Gomez is celebrating at #1 for another week with her newest smash “Lose you to love me” (#1). I’m looking forward to listening to her upcoming album. I hope that this will be as good as her last one, but I’ve my doubts because of the fact that several of her singles between these albums haven’t done as good as “Lose you to love me” or most of the songs from “Revival”. “Io sono bella” (#2, “I am beautiful”) by Emma is still in the hunt for #1, but as former #1 the chance for getting back is very low. Next week “Higher love” (#3) by Kygo & Whitney Houston will reach the 20 weeks mark and this song is still on the podium. I can’t believe that I first thought that I won’t chart this song. I’m not sure on which position this song will end during the year-end review, but I expect a very good position. Just outside the Top 3 is Swiss dialect pop by Hecht. Their song “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer?” (#4, “Are you ready for the love with me?”) is holding its spot for another week. “Can we pretend” (#5) by Pink feat. Cash Cash is completing the non-moving Top 5.

And here is the next non-moving song within the Top 10. German singer Jeanette Biedermann is still doing well with “Besser mit dir” (#6, “Better with you”). Next in line is the first song which climbed up. It is “To the wire” (#7) by Julian Jordan. This song is followed by the only other song which also climbed up within the Top 10. “The last time” (#10) by The Script also climbed up two spots. These songs swapped their spots with “Büdl an da Wond” (#9, “Picture on the wall”) by Edmund and “Castles” (#10) by Freya Ridings.

Finally some “younger” songs are entering the Top 20. Among these fresh new songs is EDM hit “Used to love you” (#13) by Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis. For both artists it could turn out that “Used to love you” will be their biggest hit on chart. Directly behind another Austro Pop song can be found. It is “Reden” (#14, “Talk”) by Josh.. This Austrian singer had his breakthrough last year with “Cordula Grün” and now he is on the way into the Top 10. Also a candidate for a Top 10 spot is “Kissing other people” (#15) by Lennon Stella. Beside her first singles she is widely known for her role in the drama series “Nashville”. Although this series ended in the US on July, 2018 I’m looking forward to see the last season at the end of the year and hopefully this show will generate some more hits as in the past. Also near a Top 10 spot is last week’s highest debut. Kate Voegele’s new single “French” (#16) climbed up 15 spots. And I shouldn’t forget another hit single by LANY. “Malibu nights” (#23) is just outside the Top 20, but this song is for a 2nd week in a row the greatest gainer of the week which makes this song a perfect candidate for last big leap into the Top 10.

Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi is more or less a regular artist and now he debuts with his new single “Before you go” (#73). Sure this debut isn’t really very good, but I really believe in this song and its chances for a becoming a big hit. Directly behind you can find another sleeper. Lauv and LANY teamed up for their new single “Mean it” (#74). Now I’m absolutely regret it that I’ve not bought a concert ticket for their 2019 show in Vienna. I hope they are returning to Austria anytime soon.

Other debuts are “Let him go” (#83) by JUNG feat. Clara Mae, “Nucleare” (#84, “Nuclear”) and “Inutile canzone” (#95, “Needless song”) by Emma, “What I’m leaving for” (#94) by Lady Antebellum, “Better now” (#98) by Oh Wonder and “Früher mal wie dich” (#99, “As I used to love you”) by Mark Forster.

Week 459 – December 14^th , 2019

Today I’ve shocking news for you all. There is another week without a single move within the Top 5. So “Lose you to love me” (#1) by Selena Gomez is still shining bright from the top spot. Four times #1 “Io sono bella” (#2, “I am beautiful) by Italian Emma can be found at the runner’s up spot. And once more within the Top 3 is “Higher love” (#3) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. This song is now in its 16th consecutive week in the Top 3. This is amazing and brings me to a special history part in this review.

Back in February 2013 Alanis Morissette reached her 16th and final week in the Top 3 with “Receive”. This song stayed at #1 for ten weeks in two runs at the top. At the end “Receive” had 26 weeks within the Top 10 and left the chart after a record of 60 weeks. This record had been later broken by “L’amore non mi basta” (“Love isn’t enough”) by Italien singer Emma when the song left the chart after 64 weeks with amazing 27 weeks within the Top 10. This song has been surpassed this week because of the fact that “L’amore non mi basta” only stayed for 15 weeks within the Top 3 from December 2013 until March 2014. Nine of these weeks this song stayed at #1. Recently the following two songs left the Top 3 in the section with the longest Top 3 run. These songs are “My heart ain’t that broken” by German singer Leslie Clio and “If I knew” by Anouk with 14 weeks within the Top 3. “My heart ain’t that broken” set its record back in 2015 and left the chart after 57 weeks. “If I knew” left the chart after 52 weeks and had its Top 3 run from October 2016 until January 2017. All these songs reached notable spots within the year-end review. “Receive” reached #29 in 2012 and #2 in 2013. “L’amore non mi basta” had been the year-end #1 in 2014 and “My heart ain’t that broken” in 2015. “If I knew” finished at #18 in 2016 and #2 in 2017.

So the expectations are high on “Higher love”. For Kygo and Whitney Houston this song could be their first year-end Top 10 hit. So let’s move on to the rest of the Top 5. Swiss dialect pop “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer? (#e, “Are you ready for the love with me?”) is still knocking at the door to Top 3 and “Can we pretend” (#5) by Pink feat. Cash Cash is also holding its spot.

The highest ranked song outside the Top 5 is “To the wire” (#6) by Julian Jordan. This song is followed by the first of three new songs in this section. Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis climbed up six spots with their single “Used to love” (#7). Holding its spot is “The last time” (#8) by The Script. Not only “Used to love” climbed up six spots for a spot within the Top 10 all other new songs also climbed up six spots. Next in line is “Kissing other people” (#9) by Lennon Stella. For her this is her first Top 10 hit. Multiple Top 10 hits had the other artist with a new song in the Top 10. It is “French” (#10) by Kate Voegele.

The greatest gainer of the week is “Better luck next time” (#26) by Kelsea Ballerini. This song is in my eyes more pop than country but I love it. The highest debut is a little bit older and from Spain. Some months ago I discovered María Parrado and out of her 2018 album “Si me dejas” (#75, If you let me”) and “No creo en nada” (#76, “I don’t believe in anything”) got their debuts. Other debuts are “Vento sulla luna” (#77, “Wind on the moon”), “Loneliest time of year” (#79) by Mabel, “Make it on your own” (#93) by Ed Struijlaart, “Hola, Hola” (#96, “Hello, hello) by SEÑORITAS and “What love looks like “(#98) by Karen McDawn.

Week 460 – December 21^st, 2019

Over the last two or three months I hadn’t as much time to listen to new music as I would. So I’m running a little bit late in debuting some of the bigger hits. And there is another interesting fact about my chart in these days. When I re-started charting back in 2011 I had rather long waiting list (in some weeks this list had more than 100 songs on it) for my Top 100. On this waiting list for several weeks had been “Torpedo” by Jillette Johnson which had become one of the biggest hits to date. Over the years this waiting list was reduced to zero songs, but since several weeks I reactivated this waiting list which is now up to about 30 to 40 songs. I really don’t know why, but for the moment this works and I hope to reduce this list as fast as it is possible.

So let’s see how this last week which counts for the 2019 review is ending. Still at the top is Selena Gomez with “Lose you to love me” (#1). This song is now in its 4th week at #1. Also holding its spot is “Io sono bella” (#2, “I am beautiful”) by Emma. I love this song and I’ve pointed out before that her new album “Fortuna” isn’t bad. Breaking the record for the longest run within the Top 3 is “Higher love” (#3) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. This song is now in its 17th week in this part of the chart. Over the last weeks there hadn’t been a change within the Top 5, but this week one song from my waiting list shot straight into the Top 4. It is a song by a Canadian artist who had only two hits before. The first time The Weeknd entered the chart had been in November 2014 with “Love me harder” when he was featured on the Ariana Grande song. This song peaked at #13. The other song The Weeknd charted had been the 2017 song “Lust for life” where he was featured on the Lana Del Rey track. This one has been his first and only Top 10 hit before this week’s debut. “Lust for life” peaked at #6. Now he celebrates a comeback with the 80’s reminiscence “Blinding lights” (#4). “Blinding lights” is the first out of two Top 10 debuts in this week’s edition. These are also the first Top 10 debuts since March 2018. I can’t believe that “Zusammen” (“Together”) by Die Fantastischen Vier feat. Clueso has been the last Top 10 debut before these songs. Rounding out the Top 5 is “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer” (#5, “Are you ready for the love with me?”) by Hecht.

Next in line is the 2nd best debut in this week’s edition. It is the first single from Alanis Morissette’s upcoming new album. “Reasons I drink” is her first single since “Superstar wonderful weirdos” back in 2015 which peaked at #4. I love her album “Havoc and bright lights” which produced several Top 10 hits including her #1 smash “Receive”. This song spent 10 weeks in two runs at #1 back in 2012/13. “Reasons I drink” is definitely a song which could do as well as “Receive”, but with “Blinding lights” out the chances of topping this is low. “Reasons I drink” is followed by “Used to love” (#7) by Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis. Up one spot is Stella Lennon with “Kissing other people” (#8). She is now the third highest ranked Canadian artist. Also up one spot is “French” (#9) by Kate Voegele. And last but not least to mention is “Malibu nights” (#10) by LANY. This song entered the Top 10 after a two spot climb.

The greatest gainer of the week is “Before you go” (#44) by Lewis Capaldi which climbed up 15 spots. Week 461 – December 28^th, 2019

Here it is the last chart of 2019. With his first solo chart hit Canadian The Weeknd scores his first #1. “Blinding lights” (#1) climbed up three spots and is now #1 in its 2nd week on chart. Therefore Selena Gomez dropped one spot with her #1 single “Lose you to love me” (#2). Also down one spot is “Io sono bella” (#3, “I am beautiful”) by Emma. This leads me to the fact that there is no “Higher love” (#4) in the Top 3. Kygo & Whitney Houston dropped out of this part of the chart for the first time for months. The other last week’s Top 10 debut “Reasons I drink” (#5) climbed up one spot and earns Alanis Morissette another Top 5 hit.

Most songs in the Top 10 are climbing up one spot in this week’s edition. The first one had been “Reasons I drink”. The other ones are “Used to love” (#6) by Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis, “Kissing other people” (#7) by Lennon Stella, “French” (#8) by Kate Voegele and “Malibu nights” (#9) by LANY. While these songs all climbed up the chart one song had to drop. Swiss dialect pop song “Besch ready für die Liebi vo mer?” (#10, “Are you ready for the love with me?”) dropped four spots and is now rounding out this week’s Top 10.

For the first time in years Silbermond is awarded with the greatest gainer of the week. Their song “In meiner Erinnerung” (#51, “In my memory”) climbed up 26 spots and could be bands first Top 50 hit since their 2012 #1 hit “Himmel auf” (“Heaven open”). I don’t expect much, but I really like this new single by them. The highest debut is “Love me anyway” (#54) by Pink feat. Chris Stapleton. I like this country pop by Pink, but her I’m not sure if this song will end in the Top 10. She also debuts with “Hurts 2B human” (#58) feat. Khalid. Week 462 – January 4^th, 2020

The New Year brings a new chart. And this week there are 16 debuts. None of these debuts can be found within the Top 10. Canadian singer The Weeknd still tops the chart with his 80s vibe song “Blinding lights” (#1). He is followed by Selena Gomez. Her song “Lose you to love me” (#2) is also holding its spot while Alanis Morissette climbed up two spots with her recent single “Reasons I drink” (#3). Therefore Emma had to leave the Top 3 with her smash “Io sono bella” (#4, “I am beautiful”). Down one spot is maybe a future all-time favourite of mine. “Higher love” (#5) by Kygo & Whitney is now in its 23rd week on chart.

Heavily knocking at the door to the Top 5 is “French” (#6) by Kate Voegele. As many of the users of M4B are posting their favourite songs of the 2010’s I just had a closer look at my favourite songs from the 2010’s. Kate Voegele had several #1’s and so she will reach my Top 100 of the 2010’s for several times but I won’t post my Top 100 for the 2010’s. This has two main reasons. First I’ve not charted back in 2010 so I missed a little bit more than a year. Second I’m celebrating the charts tenth anniversary as well as my tenth year on M4B next year so that I will do this next year. Let’s go back to this week’s chart edition. “French” is followed by “Kissing other people” (#7) by Lennon Stella. Up one spot is “Malibu nights” (#8) by LANY. Dropping down is “Used to love” (#9) by Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis. This week’s Top 10 is rounded out with the only new song in this part of the chart. Let’s welcome British singer HRVY who reached the Top 10 for the first time. His hit single is “Million ways” (#10) which climbed up two spots.

This week’s greatest gainer is “Another place” (#57) by Bastille & Alessia Cara. Their song climbed up 17 spots. This leads me as always to the highest debut of the week. This week it is a cover version. As I pointed out over the years I’m not really into cover songs, but recently “Higher love” peaked at the top for seven weeks and there are some more cover songs in this week’s editon. “Take on me” (#14) by Italian singer Alice Pisano climbed up three spots and is a cover of the A-ha 80’s classic I always loved since I saw their music video the first time on TV in these days. Another cover I’m actually charting is “I can’t make you love me” (#20) by Teddy Swims. This is a cover of the 1991 hit by Bonnie Raitt I’ve not heard before, but back on track.

This week’s highest debut is by US singer Kina Grannis. I’ve charted her three times before. The first time it had been with “Message from your heart” (peaked at #79) back in 2011, the second time it had been with “In your arms” (peaked at #63) back in 2011/12 and the third time it had been with “Without me” (peaked at #86) back in 2013. These songs had minor success, but most of her work I’m finding disappointing (which is only my opinion). This week she returns with a cover of “Lose you to love me” (#25). This song recently topped my chart for four weeks and now for the first time I’m charting the original and its cover in the same week. I discovered this song on YouTube because the algorithm recommended me a video by YouTube personality and producer Kurt Hugo Schneider. He recently did some videos with the theme “What if a specific song was by” which is based on a series of videos by musician Ali Spagnola. However, he worked with Kina Grannis on this song in the style of Billie Eilish’s song “Ocean eyes”. Neither have I charted this song or any other songs by Billie Eilish nor I’m interested in charting songs by her anytime soon because I’m not interested her music (just my opinion). Although I don’t like her songs I really like this cover version which is now the highest debut of the week.

Week 463 – January 11^th, 2020

I’m still blinded by the lights. Canadian superstar The Weeknd stays one more week at the top with his first solo chart hit “Blinding lights” (#1). 2020 starts as the last year when most of the chart topping songs scored more than two weeks at the top. For “Blinding lights” it’s the third week at the top. Selena Gomez released her new album “Rare” this week. I loved her “Revival”-album and I hope that I will like this one too. Her single “Lose you to love me” (#2) is still at the podium which is rounded out with “Reasons I drink” (#3) by Alanis Morissette who is also releasing a new album this year. It will be her first since her 2012 release of “Havoc and bright lights” which scored multiple #1’s on my chart. Up two spots and into the Top 5 is “French” (#4) by Kate Voegele. Italian singer Emma goes down one spot with her single “Io sono bella” (#5, “I am beautiful”), but she doesn’t have to worry because her new single debuts in this week’s edition.

Climbing up the chart is Lennon Stella. Her single “Kissing other people” (#6) is now heavily knocking at the door to the Top 5 and maybe this will happen next week. Next in line is former #1 “Higher love” (#7) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. I can’t even remember when this has been in my Top 10 but it happened this week. Although this song is on its way out of the Top 10 I believe this song will spent at least 40+ weeks on chart which rarely happens in these days. The only song holding its spot outside the Top 3 is “Malibu nights” (#8) by LANY. This song is followed by HRVY whose song “Million ways” (#9) climbed up one spot. For the first time in the Top 10 is Kelsea Ballerini. Her song choice “Better luck next time” (#10) from the show “Songland” is doing very well for me.

The greatest gainer of the week is “Love me anyway” (#28) which is collaboration between Pink and Chris Stapleton. I really like this country pop song and for the moment it looks like that this song will reach the Top 10. For the highest debut you’ve to look a little bit down the chart. It’s a song by Harry Styles which is a little bit of a surprise. Former One Direction singers are struggling on my chart and most of the time they only have minor hits. Some songs have reached the Top 20, but all of these songs failed to enter the Top 10. This brings me to this week’s chart which sees five songs by former members of One Direction. Niall Horan has two charting hits with “Nice to meet ya” (peaked at #18) and “Put a little love on me” (#61). While “Put a little love on me” is on its way up “Nice to meet ya” is expected to leave the chart in a few weeks. Also Louis Tomlinson has now a smaller hit with “Don’t let it break your heart” (#68). And now Harry Styles debuts with two songs from his new album “Fine line”. The highest debut is “Adore you” (#52) which just missed the Top 50. His other debut is “Watermelon sugar” (#74). As there hasn’t been a Top 10 hit by the former One Direction members I don’t see it happen for Harry Styles’ debuts but who knows.

Other debuts are “Stupida allegria” (#54, “Mad happiness”) by Emma, “Love is fire” (#75) by Freya Ridings, “Superare” (#77, “Overcome”) and “Dov'è che si va” (#78, “Where is it going”) by Annalisa, “All the things (I’m not)” (#84) by Drew, “All that we could have been” (#93) by Alex Sampson, “Listen to your heart” (#95) by Through Fire and “Wie nah” (#96, “How close”) by klea.

Week 464 – January 18^th, 2020

I never thought that The Weeknd will reach a top spot or even the #1 on my chart, but with 80's inspired “Blinding lights” (#1) everything changed for the Canadian singer. In its 5th week on chart this song is now in its 4th consecutive week at the top. Still in the hunt is Selena Gomez although I don’t think that “Lose you to love me” (#2) will return at the top. Speaking about this song leads me to the cover (#15) by Kina Grannis which is now on its way into the Top 10. “Reasons I drink” (#3) by Alanis Morissette is holding its spot, but it is absolutely possible that she is taking over with this song within a few weeks. Still near the Top 3 is “French” (#4) by Kate Voegele. I’m really into this song, but for the moment I don’t see another #1 by her. Next in line is former #1 “Io sono bella” (#5, “I am beautiful”) by Emma whose latest single “Stupida allegria” (#46, “Mad happiness”) reached the Top 50 in its 2nd week on chart.

Finally near the Top 5 is “Malibu nights” (#6) by LANY. Possibly they are doing the final step next week. Holding their spot are Kygo and Withney Houston with their cover “Higher love” (#7). Down two spots is “Kissing other people” (#8) by Lennon Stella. Swapping spots are Kelsea Ballerini and HRVY so that “Better luck next time” is at #9 and “Million ways” at #10.

Surprisingly the greatest gainer of the week is “Don’t let it break your heart” (#50) by Louis Tomlinson. Never thought that this song will reach the Top 50 as fast as it did with an 18 spot climb in this week’s edition. As always the greatest gainer of the week is followed by the highest debut of the week. It is “Wrong direction” (#78) by Hailee Steinfeld. Sometimes I’ve not the feeling that a particular could be a hit for me. You remember when I wrote that I was undecided to chart “Higher love”? Nearly a half year later this song is on its way to become one of my biggest hits. Now I had similar feelings about “Wrong direction”. When I first listened to this song I was sure that I wouldn’t chart this song, but lastly I gave it one more try and now it is the highest debut with a big chance to sprint up the chart in the next week. Sure only the future will tell where this song will peak, but I’m nearly sure that this one could do well.

Week 465 – January 25^th, 2020

The first month of 2020 is going to its end and I can’t believe that The Weeknd is still enthroning with his latest hit single “Blinding lights” (#1). Now this song is in its 5th week at the top and the chance that this song can’t be found at #1 in the next edition is very small. Up one spot is another singer from Canada. Long-time core artist Alanis Morissette’s single “Reasons I drink” (#2) is now ready for takeover but I think it will last at least two more weeks before taking over. “Reasons I drink” swapped the spot with “Lose you to love me” (#3) by Selena Gomez. This song became the first one to be in the Top 10 when the cover of this song also is in the Top 10. This happens because Kina Grannis’ cover of this song climbed up six spots to peak at #9. For Kina Grannis this is her first Top 10 hit. Holding its spot is “French” (#4) by Kate Voegele and new in this part of the chart is “Malibu nights” (#5) by LANY.

Directly behind the Top 5 are two former #1’s. The higher ranked is “Io sono bella” (#6, “I am beautiful”) by Italian singer Emma. Her latest single “Stupida allegria” (#46) isn’t doing as well as this song and only climbed up three spots in its 3rd week on chart. The other former #1 is “Higher love” (#7) by Kygo & Whitney Houston which is now celebrating a half year on chart. Next in line is Lewis Capaldi. I first charted him with his first solo single “Bruises” (peaked at #96) back in 2017. His breakthrough hit became “Someone you loved” (peaked at #18) in 2019. And now he enters the Top 10 for the first time with his recent smash “Before you go” (#8). I love this tune and I hope that it will climb up the chart for some more weeks. This week’s Top 10 is rounded out with “Kissing other people” (#10) by Lennon Stella.

As always at this point of the review I’m looking for the greatest gainer of the week. This week it is a song in Italian by Annalisa. Her song “Dov'è che si va” (#38, “Where is it going”) climbed up 25 spots in its 3rd week on chart and I really believe this one could be another Top 10 hit for her. Also doing well is another song by her. “Superare” (#44, “Overcome”) climbed up 18 spots. The highest debut comes from Swedish singer Klara Hammarström. Her song “You should know me better” (#73) leads her to the chart debut.

Other debuts are “Rare” (#83) by Selena Gomez, “You should be sad” (#84) by Halsey, “Summer of my life” (#85) by Cally Rhodes, “No other” (#88) by Koni, “I hope you’re happy now” (#89) by Carley Pearce & Lee Brice, “No talk” (#90) by Lowell, “Better off without you” (#91) by Becky Hill feat. ”Blinding lights” (#1) is now at #1 for the 6th consecutive week. The release of the video to the single helped The Weeknd to score this 6th chart topping week. Still in the hunt is “Reasons I drink” (#2) by Alanis Morissette. She should definitely take over very soon. New at the podium is Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi. His sad song “Before you go” (#3) is sprinting up the chart and climbed up five spots in this week’s edition. I’ve the feeling that this song could reach #1 directly after Alanis Morissette did her final step with “Reasons I drink”. Down one spot are the original version of “Lose you to love me” (#4) by Selena Gomez and “French” (#5) by Kate Vogele.

Now outside the Top 5 is “Malibu nights” (#6) by LANY after dropping down one spot. Up two spots is the cover version of “Lose you to love me” (#7) by Kinna Grannis. It is only a matter of time when the cover is performing better than the original. Next in line are the former #1’s “Io sono bella” (#8, “I am beautiful”) by Emma and “Higher love” (#9) by Kygo & Whitney Houston. This week’s Top 10 is rounded out with the Top 10 debut by Spanish singer María Parrado. Her single “Si me dejas” (#10, “If you leave me”) reached the Top 10 after climbing up four spots.

“Wrong direction” (#48) is the greatest gainer of the week after rising up 17 spots in its 3rd week on chart. This brings Hailee Steinfeld back into the Top 50 for the first time a while. This leads me to the highest debut. It is by Australian singer CXLOE. She has released several singles over the last three years and I just discovered her this week. So I decided to chart her debut single back from 2017 and this leads to the fact that “Tough love” (#71) is this week’s highest debut. This song is followed by the emotional single “Monsters” (#72) by James Blunt. He returns after an absent of six years when his last chart hit “Bonfire heart” (peaked at #42) left.

Week 467 – February 8^th, 2020

Finally Alanis Morissette did the last step with her single “Reasons I drink” (#1). She replaced “Blinding lights” (#2) by The Weeknd which topped the chart for six weeks. Holding its spot is “Before you go” (#3) by Lewis Capaldi. As I pointed out last week it is likely that this song will take over anytime soon. Also non-moving is “Lose you to love me” (#4) by Selena Gomez. For the first time in history the same song interpreted by two artists can be found within the Top 5. This happens because of the fact that Kina Grannis’ version climbed up two spots to #5.

Now falling out of the Top 5 is “French” (#6) by Kate Voegele. I like this song but for me it isn’t her best work. Also down one spot is “Malibu nights” (#7) by LANY. Still sailing on the wave of success is Spanish singer Maria Parrado. Last week she debuted in the Top 10 with her song “Si me dejas” (#8, “If you leave me”). This song climbed up two spots in this week’s edition. This week she debuts in this part of the chart with her song “No creo en nada” (#10, “I don’t believe in anything”). Caught between these two songs is “Love you anyway” (#9) by Pink feat. Chris Stapleton.

The greatest gainer of the week is “Enamórate de alguien más” (#62, “Fall in love with someone else” by Morat. For him this is his first chart appearance and it is still a long way to go to reach a notable spot. And now to the highest debut of the week which is a song by British singer Dua Lipa. Over the last year’s she had only minor success but with the release of her single “Physical” (#41) everything could change. Sure this song missed the Top 40 by one spot but “Physical” should climb up the chart fast. Directly behind the every emotional single “Anyone” (#42) by Demi Lovato debuts. I really appreciate that she shares this song with the audience and for me this will be another hit by her.

Other debuts are “Andan diciendo” (#82, “They are saying”) by Ventino & Lalo Ebratt & Year, “It’s not all about you” (#88) by Lawrence, “No importa” (#89, “Never mind”) by Alaina Castillo, “Believe in you” (#90) by Cimorelli, “Down in flames” (#91) by AJ Mitchell, “Run through walls” (#92) by The Script, “Hard boy” (#95) by Frawley, “Recuerdo” (#96, “Memory”) by TINI & Mau & Ricky and “Everybody’s scared” (#97) by Parah Dice & Holy Molly.
