I have read several posts with mention of some personal chart rules. Please post any rules (past or present) that you would like to discuss. No one's rules are better or worse than anyone else's, but it would be fun to hear some different opinions. My chart has undergone many changes over the years. The only steadfast rule I now use is I must have an MP3 of the song for it to chart, whether it originated from a radio rip or lifted from a video, etc.

I also have the same rule now. I will chart anything as long as I have it in some sort of form whether it be a CD, mp3, etc...
Songs can chart as long as I like them; I do not remove them if they fall below a certain level.

I will only chart the single if it is featured as the latest offering from the artist.

Back when I started making my chart, anything would and could chart - if I liked it, there it was. It tended to be newer releases, bit occasionally, a 2 year old song would chart based on its inclusion on a soundtrack or compilation.
I also had the rule that I had to own the song on a CD. However, due to much easier access to songs thanks to the internet, this rule is no longer in place as any song is able to be downloaded within minutes.

Since last year, I implemented an unofficial rule that I'll only chart something if I have it on MP3 or CD. Other than that, a song can stay on as long as I want it to, although I tend to drop songs faster in the bottom half

I have no rules and have neved had them, but obviously, if I had the song on tape or cd it was easier for it to enter my chart. As long as I like it, any song can chart with me

songs on mine are ones that are 'recent'/'new' here in australia.....and if i have a song on mp3 or cd then obviously it gives me greater chance to hear it and enjoy it and therefore have it chart higher, although i do tend to hear most of the songs that chart fairly often anyway, the ones that i don't are the ones that generally debut in the 30-40 region and drop out after one or two weeks.
Aside from that I've got no real rules.

The only rule I have is that a song can only last 10 charts (20 weeks, since my chart is bi-weekly) and then it drops off. That might not prevent it from re-entering in the future, but that has only happened a few times - most notably "Millennium" by Robbie Williams charted for 2 charts in January 1999 but then re-entered in May or June for a full 10 chart run (it was also my #1 song of 1999).

I guess I operate a little differently since I'm not going after every song on mp3, unless I can find it without trouble.
Recognition: In order for the song to enter the top 40, I must be able to identify the song in my head by seeing the title and artist, whether or not I like the song better than those higher. (For example, this week, "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5 bullets to #41- but falls short because I couldn't hear it in my head on Sunday - but a few days later now I can, so it will debut, probably high next week.)
Two impression rule: The top 140 is reserved for songs I have heard twice. This is because earlier I heard a song I really liked and debuted it high, only to never hear it again.
Must be recorded: Weeds out the local bands I've heard and liked. The song must be available on a album, single, or as an Internet mp3 or television performance. It must be available for me to hear the songover and over again.
Older songs: Can chart at any time, but there has to be a reason for it, whether it was heard at a concert, used in a film, or is getting significant airplay on radio.
There is no recurrent chart or longevity rules. Songs can stay on as long as they still feel fresh. There is no limit on re-entries.
New entries on the top 40 and songs climbing to number one automatically bullet regardless of overall movement.
There must be at least one debut each week on the top 40, and although it has been close, I haven't had a song forced off to accomodate this rule.
I also have an unwritten rule to try to have at least one song from the R&B/Rhythmic/Urban/Hip-Hop/Rap genre be in the top 40 at all times. Even though I don't actively listen to this type of station, I like to acknowledge artists who impress me outside of rock music.

My rules (theyve been broken a couple of times but i tend to stick with them):
Album Chart - I need to own the album for it to be on my chart. (re-releases of earlier albums may also chart as new). MP3's or downloaded albums CANNOT chart.
Songs/Singles chart:
No two songs from the same album by the same artist, can be on the chart at the same time unless the "B" side of a single, or part of a EP.
No song can be on the chart for more then 13 weeks.
Only the primary artist(s) is listed, unless it is a combanation of artists that would not normally record together and that the primary lead vocal is shared equally by both..
During the early years of my charts, only singles could chart, or non-singles that made the local radio stations printed surveys.
Now, any song can chart, with or without radio play. I may select a different song from a album to be the 'single' then the record company picked.
Songs/Singles per Album rules
# of Songs on Album / # of Singles Allowed 4-7 / 1 8-12 / 2 13-17 / 3 more then 18 / 4
