Here goes the top ten...
10. BEYONCE KNOWLES - Sweet Dreamstaken from the album "I Am ... Sasha Fierce"Peak: 1 (1 week)
The three main first singles from I Am Sasha Fierce (If I Were A Boy, Single Ladies and Halo) were all worldwide smashes, but the two singles after that, Diva and Ego received mixed commercial success worldwide. Beyonce hit it big with the sixth single from the album "Sweet Dreams" peaking at number one on my chart, but also peaking at number one in New Zealand, becoming her first number one single "Beautiful Liar" in 2007. Beyonce has gone on to have further chart success releasing "Broken Hearted Girl" and "Video Phone" from the album, both of which have peaked in the top ten in my chart.
9. KELLY CLARKSON - Already Gonetaken from the album "All I Ever Wanted"Peak: 1 (1 week)
The third official single from "All I ever Wanted", Already Gone became her most successful song on my chart since "Sober" in 2007 (it also was number nine of the year). When I bought the album, I felt that this was a standout track, and it received a boost in the chart when it was released as an official single, pushing it up to number one. 43 weeks later the song is still in the chart and has become one of the longest sitting songs of the year, second to another upcoming single.
8. LADY GAGA - Paparazzitaken from the album "The Fame"Peak: 2
Despite peaking at number two, Paparazzi has become Lady GaGa's second most successful song on my chart, just behing "Poker Face". With this song, just like Already Gone, it charted before the release of the single, and has been in the chart for 41 weeks. "The Fame" has garnered worldwide success reaching the top five in the USA, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, and much of it has been due to the popularity of the singles from the album. Lady GaGa tours Australia and New Zealand in February, can't wait for the concert!!!!
7. SMASHPROOF featuring GIN WIGMORE - Brothertaken from the album "The Weekend"Peak: 2
Another number two peak, the highest New Zealand entry of the year goes to "Brother", which is ahead of it's nearest New Zealand competitor by twelve places!!! "Brother" set records in New Zealand when it stayed at number one for eleven consecutive weeks early in 2009, and hopefully should go on to be the number one single of the year (it could be either "Brother" or "I Gotta Feeling"). Smashproof themselves followed the single up with "It's Friday" which peaked at number 35 on my chart, and "Ordinary Life" which reached number 9. Gin Wigmore, who features in the chorus has charted with "Oh My" and "I Do", as well as her first single "Under My Skin" in 2008. The track spent 25 weeks in the top 100, the shortest stay by a top ten-er this year.
6. KATY PERRY - Waking Up In Vegastaken from the album "One Of The Boys"Peak: 1 (1 week)
Katy Perry has had an awesome start to her career with three of her first four official releases reaching number one on my chart ("One of the Boys" was only released in Australia so hasn't been counted, although it did peak at number two). "Waking Up In Vegas" reached number one on my chart only for a week but managed to stay within the top 20 for several weeks and in the top 100 for 32 weeks. The song has gone on to be one of my top five video's of the year. It really makes me want to go to Las Vegas - that and "the Hangover"!
5. BLACK EYED PEAS - Boom Boom Powtaken from the album "The E.N.D."Peak: 1 (3 weeks)
Spending three weeks at number one in May, "Boom Boom Pow" was probably the only song in the top ten I didn't instantly like. It took a little while to get into, but that allowed it to stay on the charts for a long time - 34 weeks in fact. This is their most successful entry on a year-end charts, their only other top ten-er being "Hey Mama" from 2004 which came in at number seven and spent five weeks at the top. The Black Eyed Peas have followed this single up with "I Gotta Feeling", "Meet Me Halfway" and "Rock That Body" (which is currently charting). They also had limited success with "Imma Be" a promotional single which made the tail end of my personal top fifty when "Boom Boom Pow" was number one.
4. MARIAH CAREY - Obsessedtaken from the album "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel"Peak: 1 (4 weeks)
She was number four in 2002 with "Through The Rain", number ten in 2003 with "Bringing on the Heartbreak", number one and number five in 2005 with "We Belong Together" and "It's Like That" respectively, number three in 2008 with "Touch My Body" and manages number four this year with "Obsessed". The track debuted at number ten and took two days to reach number one on my chart, and has added to a long string of number one hits for the number one diva. Mariah has said that she will follow up the release of "Memoirs..." with a remix album. From this her latest single comes, "H.A.T.E.U." which has peaked at number five on the chart. The track has spent 30 weeks in the top 100.
3. TAYLOR SWIFT - You Belong With Me"taken from the album "Fearless"Peak: 1 (1 week)
Despite staying at number one for shorter than "Love Story", "You Belong With Me" gives Taylor the number three spot of 2009. The song was fuelled mainly by it's video clip which is easily my favourite video of the year. The single peaked at number five in New zealand and Australia, but has enjoyed longevity in both countries, as well as on my personal chart, sitting there for 36 weeks. Taylor has followed this single up with "Should've Said No" (#13) and "Fifteen". She is the second most nominated artist for the 2010 Grammy Awards in February.
2. BEYONCE KNOWLES - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)taken from the album "I Am...Sasha Fierce"[/b]
Peak: 1 (1 week)
She spent two weeks at number one with this track in December and returned to number one in January with this hit, which has become one of her signature tracks, not to mention the video... The video itself won Best Video at the MTV Music Awards, much of it for it's complicated choreography. No doubt about it, Beyonce is talented!!! The track is the number fourteen of the decade, and was in the top 100 of last year at number 56. The track has been in the chart for 50 weeks in total, 40 of which have been this year. She should easily make a year on the chart in early 2010.
WHICH LEAVES ONLY ONE MORE SONG! YOU'VE PROBABLY GUESSED IT BUT HERE IT IS:
1. BEYONCE KNOWLES - Halotaken from the album "I Am...Sasha Fierce"Peak: 1 (7 weeks)
It has only been done once before by Shakira, who took out the number one and number two position in 2002 with "Whenever Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes". Beyonce repeats this in 2009 with "Halo" and "Single Ladies". With a whopping seven weeks at number one, Beyonce took out the record for longest at number one and it was seven consecutive weeks, an impressive feat for Beyonce, who's two tracks are far ahead of Taylor's number three track. She managed to spent 50 weeks in the top 100 and the a good 40 weeks of that was in the top 50! Beyonce ends the decade at number four with this track, which IMO is her best track EVER!!!
