64. EMINEM - Beautifultaken from the album "Relapse"Peak: 13 Even though Beautiful only peaked at number 13 (becoming his highest peaking single since When I'm Gone in 2006), it manages to come in at number 65. The song remained in the charts for longer than half the year, and spent a number of weeks between 20 and 30. His other hit of the year (on the international charts) was "We Made You" which peaked well below the top 50 on my personal chart. 63. JASON MRAZ featuring COLBIE CAILLAT - Luckytaken from the album "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal ThingsPeak: 2 Narrowly missing the top spot (it was held off by Beyonce's "Halo"), "Lucky" is Jason Mraz's second top five single. "I'm Yours" is still his most successful single, peaking at number one in early 2007, and reaching the top 100 of the year in 2007, 2008 and the top 200 in 2009. Only one other song has managed that feat for the three years 2007-2009 ... and it is coming up... 62. PIXIE LOTT - Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)taken from the album "Turn It Up"Peak: 3 This song peaked at number one on the UK charts and reached number 19 in New Zealand. Pixie Lott's first single "Mama Do" managed to peak at number three on my chart, her first and only top 20 entry. Despite the success of her first two singles in the UK ("Boys and Girls" also reached number one) Pixie Lott's album has been panned by critics, who think it is boring and calculated ... I still might buy it though (maybe when it's in the $10 bin). 61. GIRLS ALOUD - Untouchabletaken from the album "Out of Control"Peak: 3 "Untouchable" is infamous for becoming the first Girls Aloud single to miss the top ten in the UK. It peaked at number 11 . Girls Aloud are one of the most successful girl groups of the decade, personally I would rate them third amongst the girl groups, second to the Sugababes and Destiny's Child. Their success has been largely limited to the UK, but they have had five number one singles on my personal chart, the most recent being 2007's "Call The Shots". 60. KELLY CLARKSON - I Do Not Hook Uptaken from the album "All I Ever Wanted"Peak: 2 Kelly Clarkson's second single from her album "All I Ever Wanted", the song managed to peak at number two on my chart in April. It has been a good year for Clarkson with three songs in the top 100. She also charted with several non-released tracks, "Cry" and "All I Ever Wanted", and the album became one of my favourite albums of the year.

Great positions for Taylor Swift, Paramore, James/Nelly, Evermore, Jay-Z/Alicia, Jay Sean and Little Boots.
And from the latest batch, Jason/Colbie, Pixie Lott and Kelly Clarkson.

59. GREEN DAY - 21 Gunstaken from the album "21st Century Breakdown"Peak: 6 "21 Guns" was the second single released from 21st Century Breakdown, and the highest charting so far. The track is reminiscent of some of the slower tracks on American Idiot, although both slow singles ("Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends") reached number one on my personal chart. The other singles from this album have not managed to peak as high, although "21st Century Breakdown" the single reached number 22. 58. ESKIMO JOE - Foreign Landtaken from the album "Inshalla"Peak: 1 (1 week) Eskimo Joe's first single from Inshalla, Foreign Land peaked at number one, their third number one on my personal chart after "Older Than You" and "Black Fingernails Red Wine". The track was apparently written while the band were in New York, and drove the album to a number one debut, their second consecutive number one in Australia. 57. P!NK - Sobertaken from the album "Funhouse"Peak: 9 "Sober" is P!nk's second single from her "Funhouse album" and her third in the top 100 so far. The single was big, after the international success of lead single "So What?". "Sober" peaked at number seven in December last year, but stayed on the chart long enough this year to get up to 58 of the year. 56. KATY PERRY - Thinking Of Youtaken from the album "One Of The Boys"Peak: 5 "Thinking of You" was a flop in Katy Perry standards. It managed to chart, but received nowhere near as much commercial acclaim as her first two singles. Despite the non-success of this song, it manages to hold at number 57 of the year, largely due to Katy Perry's appeal, and the video (it is one of the most watched video's on my IPod). 55. EMPIRE OF THE SUN - Walking On A Dreamtaken from the album "Empire of the Sun"Peak: 8 Debuting late last year on the chart, "Walking on a Dream" became a huge summer smash in both Australia and New Zealand. The single went on to win single of the year at the ARIA awards, while being certified gold in New Zealand. Empire of the Sun have yet to repeat their success, with We Are The People peaking somewhere below the top fifty, and no other charting songs.

54. BEYONCE KNOWLES - If I Were A Boy taken from the album "I Am...Sasha Fierce"Peak: 4 "If I Were A Boy" was the first release from "I Am...Sasha Fierce", the first of eight charting tracks from the album. The song peaked at number one in 2008, and made number six on the year end charts. Beyonce hasn't left the charts since, making a huge impact on the top 20. 53. LITTLE BOOTS - Remedytaken from the album "Hands"Peak: 6 This is the second track from Little Boots' debut album "Hands". The single has stayed in the chart for 16 weeks, many of those within the top 20 and is still in the chart, sitting at 22. The track has proved to be a success on the New Zealand chart as well, peaking at number 21, higher than "New In Town". 52. KINGS OF LEON - Revelrytaken from the album "Only By The Night"Peak: 2 "Revelry" followed in the footsteps of previous singles "Sex on Fire" and "Use somebody" by peaking at number two. Yet to get a number one on my personal chart, this song peaked at number 19 in New Zealand and was certified Gold in Australia. It was held from the number one spot by Taylor Swift's "Love Story". 51. LADY GAGA - Bad Romancetaken from the album "The Fame Monster"Peak: 1 (4 weeks) If "Bad Romance" was released earlier in the year it would undoubtedly be higher on the chart. With four weeks at number one it holds joint second place for longest time spent at number one this year. Lady GaGa should continue her hit streak well into 2010 with the recent release of The Fame Monster. 50. ASHER ROTH - I Love Collegetaken from the album "Asleep In The Bread Aisle"Peak: 10 A surprise hit, Asher Roth narrowly misses out on a spot in the top fifty with his track "I Love College". The track became quite popular on my chart due to the sampling of Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" (although the official release didn't have them because Rivers Cuomo wouldn't clear the sample"). "Say It Ain't So" is one of my top twenty songs of the nineties, and caused this track to rocket up the chart. Besides that though this song is fun, but just like a lot of the other artists on here, Asher Roth has been unable to follow this song up with a substantial hit.

49. RIHANNA - Hatin' on the Club'Peak: 4 "Hatin' On The Club" was not officially released by Rihanna but became popular due to heavy airplay in New Zealand, peaking at number eight on the pop airplay charts. I'm not sure whether Rihanna plans on putting a proper version of this song onto an album, as it is not included on Rated R. Nonetheless, this song followed a string of Rihanna hits from "Good Girl Gone Bad". 48. DAVID GUETTA featuring KELLY ROWLAND - When Love Takes Overtaken from the album "One Love"Peak: 2 Peaking at number two, this Europop gem became the first single by David Guetta to peak in the top five after "Love Don't Let Me Go" peaked at number 23 in 2007. David Guetta went onto produce several internationally successful tracks, including the second single from "One Love" which failed on my chart but went to number one in plenty of countries around the world. 47. KID CUDI - Day n Nite (includes remix vs. Crookers)taken from the album "Man On The Moon"Peak: 3 Both versions of this song did considerably well on my chart, allowing the single to be within the chart for 25 weeks of the year. The first version to chart was actually the Crookers remix, which peaked at number three, and number one on the daily chart. The broken down, original single, soon replaced the Crookers remix and enabled the song to launch back into the top twenty in it's seventeenth week on the chart. Kid Cudi had a further chart hit with Kanye West and Common on "Make Her Say" which peaked at number four, but misses out on a spot in the top 100. 46. ERIC HUTCHINSON - Rock n Rolltaken from the album "Sounds Like This"Peak: 5 Eric Hutchinson spent five weeks lodged at number five earlier in the year and lands at number 47 on the year end chart. This is the first single released from "Sounds Like This" and his only substantial hit. Hutchinson released a further song later in the year, "OK, It's Alright With Me" but the song missed the top 50 altogether. Eric Hutchinson is playing support for Kelly Clarkson on her tour of Down Under in early 2010. 45. BLACK EYED PEAS - I Gotta Feelingtaken from the album "The E.N.D."Peak: 3 Most likely the biggest track of the year internationally (it was number one Stateside for a mammoth fourteen weeks!), the Black Eyed Peas peaked at number three on my personal chart with "I Gotta Feeling". Despite the international appeal of the single, I felt the song became incredibly boring. It's catchy, but when it's played over and over again it just becomes IRRITATING. Still, the song manages to come in at number 47, but in doing so, becomes one of the lower performers of the Black Eyed Peas singles post Elephunk.

44. COBRA STARSHIP featuring LEIGHTON MEESTER - Good Girls Go Badtaken from the album "Hot Mess"Peak: 2 Cobra Starship had never had a hit before this one, and have not been able to follow it up with any hit either. "Good Girls Go Bad" began charting in late July and, although it peaked at number one on the daily chart, could only manage to peak at number two in the weekly chart. The video clip and song features Leighton Meester from 'Gossip Girl' who actually sounds quite good, in an unexpected kind of way. 43. ALESHA DIXON - The Boy Does Nothingtaken from the album "The Alesha Show"Peak: 2 In short, I love this track!!! It debuted in 2008 but only made the lower region of the charts. After charting on the Australian charts in 2009, the song managed to re-enter my charts and reach it's eventual peak of number two. In doing so, she outpeaked all of her former songs, including her material from Mis-Teeq (their highest charting single was "Scandalous" which got to number four). 42. BEYONCE KNOWLES - Ave Mariataken from the album "I Am...Sasha Fierce"Peak: 7 Even though this song was not officially released, it charts at number 43 of the year, largely due to it's longevity. "Ave Maria" is taken from "I Am...Sasha Fierce" as previously mentioned, one of the most successful albums of the year. It is a slower track, and will probably not be released but the vocals are impeccable and there is no instruments, only piano and guitar, allowing Beyonce to show off that voice of hers. In her concerts, she performs the song in a medley with Sarah McLachlan's "Angel", it in itself a song that returned to the chart this year, after ten years and re-peaking at number two. 41. ALICIA KEYS - Doesn't Mean Anythingtaken from the album "The Element of FreedomPeak: 1 (3 weeks) Alicia Keys has had huge success on my chart, she's definitely one of the top artists of the decade. The track spent 3 weeks at the top in October/November this year and allowed Alicia Keys to continue her string of number ones leftover from "As I Am". Beside this, she is also the current number one on my chart. Altogether this means she has managed six number one singles in a row (luckily for her "Another Way to Die" missed out on the top 50 altogether). 40. ALICIA KEYS - No Onetaken from the album "As I Am"Peak: 12 Taken from the album "As I Am", "No One" is the only other song to chart over the three consecutive years of 2007,2008 and 2009. IN 2007 "No One" was number six on the year-end chart, last year's number one, and bows at number 41 this year. After over two years on the chart, the song finally dropped out in September this year, but has re-entered a number of times since.

60-56: Liking them all, though I'm a bit tires of Empire of the Sun. They're alright, but not that good and FAR too over-rated.
55-51: Liking them all except for Asher, and it's not too bad. Fantastic to see Revelry do well, it DID make #1 on my personal and will be in my year end top twenty.
50-46: Nothing bad here either, but I especially love Eric Hutchinson. I do agree that I Gotta Feeling can get so boring, BEP songs are already so repetitive so hearing them too often ruins them. Especially their newer stuff. I Gotta Feeling, with it's oft-repeated chorus now bores me to tears.
45-41: All good again! Especially nice to see Good Girls Go Bad, which again made my personal #1 and will be in my top ten. I too was surprised by how good Leighton's voice is.
This is going well! Looking forward to the top forty!

Now for the top forty... 39. MARIAH CAREY - I Want To Know What Love Istaken from the album "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel"Peak: 1 (2 weeks) "I Want To Know What Love Is" is Mariah's second release from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. The single flopped on the American charts, and peaked at number 45 on the Australian charts, but it became another hit for Mariah on my personal chart, peaking at number one for two weeks. It is a remake of the classic 1980's track of the same name by American rock group Foreigner. 38. BEYONCE KNOWLES - Egotaken from the album "I Am...Sasha Fierce:Deluxe Edition"Peak: 2 As mentioned earlier, it was a huge year for Beyonce, with the re-release of her album "I Am Sasha Fierce" and her world tour causing the album to rocket up the album charts in New Zealand and Australia. In both countries the album initially peaked at number eight, but managed to top this with the re-release. "Ego" was also released as a remix version with Kanye West, but the original version is the one that charted on my charts. 37. CIARA and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE - Love, Sex, Magictaken from the album "Fantasy Ride"Peak: 2 "Love, Sex, Magic" became Ciara's most successful single worldwide reaching the top ten in many countries. Even though it wasn't as successful in many Anglophone countries as previous hits "Goodies" or "1,2 Step" it has managed a peak of number two. Surprisingly, even though Ciara has had a number of top ten hits on my charts, she has not managed a number one single yet. Both "Oh" and this track reached number two. 36. ALL AMERICAN REJECTS - Gives You Helltaken from the album "When The World Comes Down"Peak: 8 Despite having quite a number of hits in the USA from "Move Along", their previous album, this became the first song in New Zealand and Australia to make a big impact on the charts. "Move Along" the track itself made number four on the chart, and this song also made number four at the end of 2008, but like Ciara, the group have yet to claim a number one. 35. LEONA LEWIS - Happytaken from the album "Echo"Peak: 1 (2 weeks) Leona Lewis returned to number one in November of this year, following in the footsteps of previous hits "Bleeding Love", "Better In Time" and "Forgive Me". The track rocketed to number one on my chart largely due to the video clip but spent eleven weeks in the top ten, quite a feat for this song. Leona has gone on to chart with "My Hands", "I Got You" and "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" from her latest album "Echo".

35. JENNIFER HUDSON - If This Isn't Lovetaken from the album "Jennifer Hudson"Peak: 4 Jennifer Hudson's debut album was a modest hit, with "Spotlight" the first single peaking at number two, and "Giving Myself" the third single peaking at number six. The key for a lot of the songs this year has been longevity, with many of the lower peaking songs managing to chart highly due to staying in the charts for longer. "If This Isn't Love" spent 31 weeks in the top 100, one of the longest charting songs. 34. LADY GAGA - LoveGametaken from the album "The Fame"Peak: 3 The third official single from "The Fame", "LoveGame" started off slow on the chart, and spent it's first ten weeks outside the top forty, it eventually cracked the top ten for a short run (three weeks) but manages to come in at number 34 of the year, largely due to the popularity of Lady GaGa all round. The Fame is, in fact, my favourite album of the year, beating out stiff competition from Beyonce and Taylor Swift, so it's no surprise to see Lovegame high up. 33. MILEY CYRUS - Hoedown Throwdowntaken from the album "Hannah Montana - The MoviePeak: 2 My girlfriend took me to see this movie, and (cringe) I really began to enjoy this song after watching it. I don't know what it is, I mean a lot of people find it incredibly irritating or stupid and meaningless but I think it's one of those guilty pleasure ones. Other than this track, Miley has managed a number of other charting singles, some of which are still to come ... 32. GOSSIP - Heavy Crosstaken from the album "Music For Men"Peak: 1 (1 week) "Heavy Cross" became Gossip's first top 20 single, the 2006 hit "standing in the way of control" only managing a 42 peak. This was a surprise hit worldwide peaking at number twelve in New Zealand and in the top ten in Australia. Their album also charted highly across the world. Their second single "Love Long Distance" from "Music For Men" managed to only peak at number 27. 31. LILY ALLEN - Not Fairtaken from the album "It's Not Me, It's You[/b] Peak: 6 Despite the success of the album and the singles off the album, Lily Allen did not manage to get any number one singles from "It's Not Me, It's You". So far, Lily's only number one single has been "Smile" from her first album, that single was the number ten single of 2006, her highest annual chart entry.

29. LADY GAGA - Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)taken from the album "The Fame"Peak: 3 "Eh Eh" was the last number one of 2008 and slipped to number three in the first week of 2009. Lady GaGa has had a consistent charter this year, with a song within the top fifty at all times in the year. "Eh Eh" itself became Lady GaGa's second number one on the chart, after "Poker Face" topped it in October 2008. 28. ALESHA DIXON - Breathe Slowtaken from the album "The Alesha Show"Peak: 4 Although being the second single from "The Alesha Show", this was actually the first song by Alesha to hit the top twenty. "Breathe Slow" became Alesha's highest charting hit in the UK, peaking at number three. It was another song which had the benefit of longevity as it stayed in the chart from January to August this year. 27. LILY ALLEN - The Fear (I Don't Know)taken from the album "It's Not Me, It's You"Peak: 2 Lily's comeback single and first release in 2009, this track managed to peak at number two on my personal chart. It was the first single of what would become five top twenty singles in a row. Her more recent entries include "F*ck You" and "Who'd Have Known" peaking at number eight and number seven respectively. Both songs just missed out on a spot in the top 200 ... 26. MILEY CYRUS - Party in the U.S.A.taken from the EP "The Time Of Our Lives"Peak: 1 (2 weeks) Miley had not had a number one on my chart until the release of this song, with four of her previous singles reaching the top five. Her first chart hit proved to be popular worldwide, peaking at number three in New Zealand and number two in the USA. Of course it wasn't without controversy, largely due to her performance at the Kids Choice Awards, which was regarded by some as "too provocative". 25. BRITNEY SPEARS - If U Seek Amytaken from the album "Circus"Peak: 4 Britney came back in a big way late in 2007 with three number ones in a row ("Gimme More", "Piece of Me", "Break The Ice") and followed that up with Circus which spawned the number one track "Womanizer". Even though she hasn't had another number one since, she has enjoyed consistent charting action with "Circus" and "If U Seek Amy" which comes in at number 26 for the year. Late in 2009, Britney released her Singles Collection, which peaked modestly around the world but included some of her most famous track. I was going to buy it, but "Lucky" isn't on it, and that's my favourite Britney track ... so maybe not.

24. LA ROUX - Bulletprooftaken from the album "La Roux"Peak: 1 (1 week) British duo La Roux have had incredible success worldwide, with Bulletproof peaking at number one in the UK. The track is really catchy and was on heavy play on my ipod. The song is still in the top 100 after 27 weeks on, not too bad for a group that released their first single this year. 23. A.R. RAHMAN featuring PUSSYCAT DOLLS - Jai Ho!taken from the album "Doll Domination 2.0"Peak: 1 (2 weeks) Surprisingly, A.R. Rahman's "Jai Ho!" is not the first number one by him on my chart. Last year "Tere Bina" from the film Guru (a Bollywood film) reached number one and stayed there for four weeks. It managed to get to number eight of the year. This track became only the second song by Pussycat Dolls to reach number one, after Stickwitu reached number one in late 2005. They have had several top five hits though, and became one of the most successful girl groups of the decade. 22. LA ROUX - In For The Killtaken from the album "La Roux"Peak: 3 Taken from their debut album "La Roux", "In For The Kill" was the duo's first charting hits. They released songs before this but they did not make the charts, although "I'm Not Your Toy" (which was officially released before this) debuted after the success of "Bulletproof". In For the Kill stayed in the charts for 29 weeks and managed a number three peak. The track itself peaked at number two in the UK. 21. MARIAH CAREY - I Stay In Lovetaken from the album "e=MC2"Peak: 4 The legendary Mariah Carey released this as the fourth official single from last year's release "e=MC2". It charted late last year and was number one for a week in December, but managed to stay in the top 100 until September this year, managing a total of 42 weeks. Mariah returned later on in the year with "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" from which the aforementioned "I Want To Know What Love Is" was taken. 20. BRITNEY SPEARS - Circustaken from the album "Circus"Peak: 4 "Circus" was the second release from "Circus" and was her most successful single in New Zealand since "Piece of Me". It's an instantly catchy song, and has a more R&B sound than a lot of her other tracks. It's Britney's highest entry on this year's chart, so doesn't quite match last year's "Piece of Me" which was number 13 of last year.

19. MIDNIGHT YOUTH - All On Our Owntaken from the album "The Brave Don't Run"Peak: 1 (1 week) The first of two New Zealand number ones this year, Midnight Youth made it big with their second single "All On Our Own". The single peaked at number six on the charts, but is actually their second top 50 hits. "The Letter" from the same album, peaked at number 22 earlier in the year. The follow up singles, "Learning To Fall" and "Cavalry" failed to crack the top 50. 18. PARAMORE - Decodetaken from the album "Twilight: The Soundtrack"Peak: 2 Paramore's "Decode" was one of the biggest hits going into this year. I saw Twilight in the last week of 2008 so it set the scene for this song to rocket up the chart. And it did, becoming the biggest Paramore song, their previous highest entry being 2007's "Misery Business" (peaking at number three). The track was included on Brand New Eyes, the third album from the American band. 17. KERI HILSON featuring KANYE WEST and NE-YO - Knock U Downtaken from the album "In A Perfect World"Peak: 3 "Knock U Down" became one of the biggest songs this year in New Zealand reaching number one and staying there for six weeks. The track features a verse by Kanye West and a verse by Ne-Yo. I have to admit, the song is not the greatest example of good songwriting, but is catchy enough to get to number 18 on the top 100 of the year. 16. LADY GAGA - Poker Facetaken from the album "The Fame"Peak: 5 Another track to make it big in 2008 and 2009, Lady GaGa's "Poker Face" remained at number one in New Zealand for ten weeks over the 2008-9 period. The second release from The Fame, it has had continued success by re-entering the charts three times over the course of the year, managing a stifling 45 weeks in the top 100. 15. KELLY CLARKSON - My Life Would Suck Without Youtaken from the album "All I Ever Wanted"Peak: 1 (1 week) This track was the only song to debut at number one this year, doing so in mid-January. It was a huge return for Kelly Clarkson, reaching number one in the USA, only her second single to do so. It also pushed the parent album "All I Ever Wanted" to a number one debut, only her second album to be number one in the USA. It has become her highest selling single in New Zealand, despite only peaking at number 11.
