Following the route I took last year, the top 40 will have a commentary! Enjoy! ;D 40. Mario, "Here I Go Again" Peak: #9 // Spins: 70 Back to ya girl, 'cos you know I need your lovin'! I can't keep runnin' away from all this kissin' and huggin'!Mario's third single came as a surprise. I had not noticed it on the album, but when it was announced as a single, I gave it a chance - and loved it! It's a change of pace from his previous singles, being an uptempo JAM! The song managed to break the top 10, and had nice longevity on the chart. And it also helped that the addictive song was played 70 times. 39.
After the booty-shaking bliss that was "La Tortura", Shakira changed it up, giving us a ballad. And it's not just any ballad - it is a masterpiece. The lyrics are incredibly sad, and Shakira shows so much emotion in her vocals, complimented by the soft Spanish guitar in the background. This is Shakira at her very best. The song debuted at #19, the HIGHEST debut of the year, and proceeded to spend two weeks at #1. Expect it to re-appear on the 2006 year-end chart. 38. Mariah Carey, "We Belong Together" Peak: #3 // Spins: 44 I'm feeling all out of my element I'm throwing things, cryin' Trynna figure out where the hell I went wrong The pain reflected in this song Ain't even half of what I'm feeling inside I need you, need you back in my life babyMe and Mariah had our ups and downs this year. After the Billboard fiasco where she gave away free downloads to win the top spot a week early, I hated her! But even then, I could not deny how good this song was. It's a great R&B ballad, and Mimi pulls it off nicely. 37. Natasha Bedingfield, "These Words" Peak: #6 // Spins: 69 Read some Byron, Shelly and Keats Recited it over a Hip-Hop beat I’m having trouble saying what I mean With dead poets and drum machinesDaniel Bedingfield's little sister broke the US market in a big way. Natasha Bedingfield, the mastermind behind "These Words", is already a star in her own right across the Atlantic, and is looking to match that star status here in the US, quite successfully. "These Words", the first single lifted from her debut album "Unwritten", expresses Natasha's anxieties with making her first single - but that's not what reels it in. It's the addictive beat, and the clever lyrics. Go Natasha! 36. Ciara ft. Missy Elliott, "1, 2 Step" Peak: #3 // Spins: 41 *Holdover from 2004. Peaked at #14, and finished as #83.Rock it, don't stop it, everybody get on the flo'! Wake the party up, we about to get it on! Let me see ya 1, 2 Step! I love it when ya 1, 2 Step! Everybody 1, 2 Step! We about to get it on!Ciara's second single was a great follow-up to "Goodies" (last year's #24 song). It's a jam, making people all over the globe shake it in the clubs. She even managed to get people to learn a new dance, the 1, 2 Step. The song managed to outperform its predecessor, peaking at #3, and scoring Ciara another solid hit. 35. LeAnn Rimes, "Probably Wouldn't Be This Way" Peak: #6 // Spins: 62 Sometimes I see you standing there Sometimes it's like I'm losing touch Sometimes I feel that I'm so lucky to have had the chance to love this much God gave me a moment's grace 'Cause if I'd never seen your face I probably wouldn't be this way...By far the most successful country song on my chart, LeAnn Rimes's "Probably Wouldn't Be This Way" is the fabulous tale of a heartbroken woman. The lyrics are fabulous, but it's the vocals that sell this song - LeAnn sings with such conviction, it's hard to believe she's NOT heartbroken! By far the best country single of the year. 34. Destiny's Child, "Cater 2 U" Peak: #6 // Spins: 45 Baby I'm happy you're home Let me hold you in my arms I just wanna take the stress away from you...After two consecutive flops on my chart - neither of which charted - the girls of Destiny's Child managed to make a comeback, in a big way. The girls took the song all the way to #6, managing longevity as they did so. Job well done! 33. Ryan Cabrera, "True" Peak: #3 // Spins: 20 Do you want me too? Cuz my heart keeps falling faster...Mr. Cabrera did pretty well for himself with this one! The song is about letting go and falling in love with the right person. It's a nice little love song. Overcoming the odds - the odds being me having disliked this song at first - Ryan took this song all the way up to #3. 32. Mario, "Let Me Love You" Peak: #2 // Spins: 36 If I was ya man, baby you'd Never worry 'bout, what I do I'll be comin' home, back to you Every night, doin' you right...This song was huge for Mario - and rightfully so. It's a great song that has Mario doing his best to convince his crush that her current man is no good for her, but that he will treat her right. The song is helped out by a catchy beat by Scott Storch. This is Mario's highest of 4 showings on the chart - either way you look at it, Mario has had a great year on the chart! 31. Amerie, "Talkin' About" Peak: #3 // Spins: 104 So many have tried before, and I've waited patiently In the end it's always wrong, it's so hard for me to believe That you can keep it goin', couldn't stop if I wanted to So baby if you take my hand, everyday can feel brand new Even when we disagree, ain't no need to get loud Everything is worth a kiss, baby that's what I'm talkin' about!Sexy R&B singer Amerie has done quite well for herself on the chart this year. She has 4 appearances on the chart - two of which have yet to come up. This is the third single from her sophomore album, "Touch". The song is a booty-shaking jam, with lyrics speaking of Amerie's infatuation with a new lover. Quite a jam, indeed! It scored Amerie her third consecutive top 3 hit, and made her a solid hitmaker on the chart! Go Amerie! ;D

30. Usher, "Caught Up" Peak: #3 // Spins: 12 I don't know what it is But it seems she's got me twisted...Usher's final single from the ultra-successful "Confessions" was "Caught Up". Following three slower songs, it was a good way to end the album. The lyrics tell the story of a guy who is 'caught up' with a girl, and he just simply cannot get her out of his mind. Although this song had the worst showing of all of the "Confessions" singles on the Billboard Hot 100, it scores Usher's biggest hit to date on G's Weekly Top 40. Not too shabby. 29. Nina Sky, "Turnin' Me On" Peak: #4 // Spins: 21 The way your body looks It's turnin' me on The way you lick your lips slow Makes me want you even more...Nicole and Natalie, the twin sisters who make up the duo Nina Sky, scored their first top 10 hit last year with "Move Ya Body", last year's #55 song on the year-end chart. However, the girls managed to make an even bigger showing with their second single, "Turnin' Me On". The song is about a girl who is in a relationship, but she meets a guy who she is very attracted to, and wants to start something on the side. It's a sexy romp which inevitably results in some dancing, due to the addictive beat. The song creeped all the way to #4 back in mid-April, enough to secure the girls a top 30 showing for their biggest hit yet. 28. Anna Nalick, "Breathe (2am)" Peak: #7 // Spins: 53 And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd Cos' these words are my diary, screaming out loud...Newcomer Anna Nalick arrived in 2005 complete with critical acclaim - and rightfully so. The first single lifted from her 'stunning debut album', as the critics have hailed it, is "Breathe (2am)", a soothing song about life. Anna manages to reel in listeners with her delighting lyrics and smooth voice. The song had a very slow rise to the top ten, but it managed to hold it's own. Due to its immense longevity, the song manages to earn a spot within the top 30, the lowest-peaking song of them all. Job well done, Anna! 27. Avril Lavigne, "Nobody's Home" Peak: #1 (1 Week) // Spins: 23 *Holdover from 2004. Peaked at #8, finished as #64.Her feelings, she hides Her dreams, she can't find She's losing her mind, she's fallen behind She can't find her place She's losing her faith She's fallen from grace, she's all over the place...Avril's third single from her sophomore album "Under My Skin" is the story of a young girl alienated, feeling lonely. We never learn why, but just learning how she's feeling is more than enough. The video has Avril playing a homeless girl, and showing her struggles with life. It is a great song, perhaps Avril's best to date. The song spent a week at #1 early on in the year. 26. Charlotte Church, "Crazy Chick" Peak: #2 // Spins: 112 You really done it this time! You know you twisted my mind! You got me actin' like a wacked-out chick! So I wont be responsible, cos I'm really not logical No I wont be to blame! You know I'm really not sane!Charlotte Church's cross-over from Gospel to Pop was fabulous - and "Crazy Chick", the lead single with which she did so, was perfect for it. It's an addictive slice of pop, completely with a creative 60's sound, which has Charlotte raving about her lover's effect on her - simply, making her crazy. The song came as a surprise, and reached #2 a few months ago. Quite a nice way to make yourself known as more than just an Opera singer. 25. Ciara ft. Ludacris, "Oh" Peak: #3 // Spins: 67 Thinkin' I was easy, I can see it That's when I say no, what fo'? Shawty can't handle this Ciara got that fire like Oh!The third single released from Ciara's debut album "Goodies" really made Ciara. The song is a slow Crunk jam, which has Ciara singing Atlanta's praises. It doesn't hurt to have Ludacris spit a verse either. The song spent three weeks at #3, Ciara's most successful song on the chart to date. She definitely had a great year. 24. Natalie Imbruglia, "Shiver" Peak: #4 // Spins: 60 We talk and talk, 'round it all Who'd have thought we'd end up here? But I'm feeling fine In a rush, never trust, you'll be there If I'd only stop And take my time...Triple threat Natalie Imbruglia made a comeback to music this year, after about three years. "Shiver", the first single, has Natalie Imbruglia evaluating her relationship with her significant other. The song is a slow-paced pop/rock song, made by Natalie's soft vocals. The song did very well for Ms. Imbruglia, having broken the top 5. Congrats to Natalie! 23. Black Eyed Peas, "My Humps" Peak: #1 (1 Week) // Spins: 71 They say I’m really sexy, The boys, they wanna sex me They always standing next to me, Always dancing next to me, Trynna feel my hump, hump. Lookin’ at my lump, lump...Stacey Ferguson, better known as Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, is a very sexy individual. Anyone who disagrees is either female, or blind. Luckily for me, I'm neither of those - and so when "My Humps" was released, a song celebrating Fergie's 'lady lumps', it wasn't hard to appreciate. Besides being one of the most fun songs of the year, the song is just insanely catchy. The sexy video that accompanies it doesn't hurt, either. The song hit #1 recently, after a fast rise. 22. Rob Thomas, "This Is How A Heart Breaks" Peak: #4 // Spins: 71 And I'm steady, but I'm startin' to shake And I don't know how much more I can take...To say that Rob Thomas has had a good year would be like saying Mariah Carey has fake titties - quite an understatement! This year, Rob was the hitmaker behind the #1 hit "Lonely No More", which is yet to come, and this here masterpiece. The song is an eclectic mix of guitars and drums, formulating a catchy lil' ditty. Rob's second single peaked at #4, leaving him with another hit under his belt. 21. Brandy, "I Tried" Peak: #1 (3 Weeks) // Spins: 54 I know all about your ways What you do when you're gone And I knew all along But they say people change So I tried to look the other way...Charting album tracks is something I'm not too keen on - but after the undeserving flop that was Brandy's brilliant album "Afrodisiac", I couldn't help but choose a song to chart. "I Tried" tells the story of a woman who knows her man is cheating on her, but instead of doing something about it, she tries to look away, assuring herself that it's just a phase. When she realizes that it's more than just that, she's fed up with it. Complete with great lyrics, Brandy's vocals shine through on this song, helped out by a hot beat helmed by Timbaland. The song hit #1 soon after charting, making Brandy a force to be reckoned with.
