This week sees three songs make their deubt this week. At #50 is the latest from Liberty X, "Then There Was You". In my opinion, this is probably their weakest single since they first hit my chart with "Holding On For You". I don't expect this one to get too much higher on my chart. It's sad, because they were putting out some great music for a while, reaching #1 twice, with "Being Nobody" and "Jumpin'". At #47 is an artist who's still relatively new on my chart. Marie-Chantal Toupin hit #15 last year with her hit "Cette Mélodie" and now she comes back to the chart for the first time since with "J'irai au Sommet Pour Toi". The highest debut of the week goes to Pink with her new single "Stupid Girls". Pink has been absent for the chart for some time. Her last appearance was back in 2003 when "Feel Good Time" hit #37. Before now, she had hit the chart a total of 8 times, including her #1 collaboration with Christina Aguilera, L'il Kim and Mýa, "Lady Marmelade". Even though Pink has the highest debut of the week, two songs make much more impressive entries in the 20s. After having reached #1 in the US this past week, and thanks to increased radio airplay and video exposure, James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" flies back onto the chart all the way up at #29 in its 11th chart week. He originally peaked at #33 back in August last year during the height of his popularity in the UK. Even further back, in April of last year, Daniel Powter hit #23 on my chart with "Bad Day" while the song was doing well in France. Now that the song and video are all over the place, the song makes the higest entry of the week up at #26 in his 10th chart week.
Speaking of French hits, the recent French #1 single by the winner of Star Academy 2, Nolwenn Leroy, flies up to #15 in its second week. "Nolween Ohwo!" should be within the Top 10 very soon. Another impressive move this week goes to Westlife. In only their third week, they take "Amazing" up 7 places to #20. This is now their 5th Top 20 single, and looks as if it may be their second Top 10 song.
In the Top 10, Kelly Clarkson collect her 5th in a row from her latest CD, giving her 9 top 10 singles in just under 4 years. Pretty impressive. Natasha Bedingfield makes an impressive move in her 21st chart week, moving up to #7. While this song took ages to reach its #10 peak in its first run, she has raced up the chart the second time around. She's looking for her biggest single yet. "These Words" so far is her biggest single, having spent 3 weeks at #5 and 40 weeks on the chart (in two runs). Madonna's still riding high with the success of her latest CD. For the third week running, she has three songs in the Top 10. "Hung Up" slides back three in its 20th week. It's now her biggest single of her career. "Jump", her thrid single moves up to #6 and her second single is still ahead. Robbie Williams' surprise hit, "Advertising Space" moves up to #5 this week, giving Robbie only his 4th Top 5 single. The last time he was in the Top 5 it was back in October 2003 when "Sexed Up" reached #5. Mathieu and Lucie relinquish their hold on the top and fall back to #3 this week. Meggie, however, is stuck at #2 for the third week as Madonna leapfrogs from #4 to land her latest #1 single with "Sorry". She has now reached the summit 12 times in her long chart career.
Here's the breakdown of her #1 singles...
- Dress You Up - 1 week
- Causing A Commontion - 2 weeks
- Express Yourself - 1 week
- Oh Father - 8 weeks
- Vogue - 5 weeks
- Rescue Me - 3 weeks
- Beautiful Stranger - 4 weeks
- Music/Cyberraga - 2 weeks
- Don't Tell Me - 1 week
- American Life - 2 weeks
- Hung Up - 8 weeks
- Sorry - 1 week so far
She would have had more. "Material Girl" and "Crazy For You" would have been number ones, but I didn't start my chart yet. Then during college, she would have had numerous chart toppers. Oh well, 12 is still impressive!
