I'm really excited about some of the music I've heard this month - and as you might guess, a great deal of it is dance music! - so this is another longer-than-usual commentary. It's great stuff to help you get thru the doldrums of winter. So there are six debuts this week - with a few more lined up for the next few weeks - split between some that you would find on the dance floor and others on your stereo or car radio. Aside from the debuts, Madonna again achieves something that's never happened before on this chart - she's the fastest riser of the week with "Sorry" moving 12-6, her best showing in the 7 1/2 years the chart's been on the web.
But on to the newcomers:
NEW TO THE CHART
THUNDER IN MY HEART AGAIN (Miami Calling Mix) Meck featuring Leo Sayer
It's the first song to debut at the top of the chart since "Rock Star" by N.E.R.D. found its way off an iTunes commercial via a Jason Nevins remix and quickly onto the chart. This is actually an old Leo Sayer song that got to #38 on Billboard in late 1977. DJ Meck has taken bits and pieces of the original and reassembled it with contemporary dance tricks (as well as the trendy retro feel) to make it one of the most vital dance records I've heard in years. It's also expected to do well on the UK Singles chart when it debuts there in the next few weeks. If you have any interest at all in this terrific song, send me a PM!
PRECIOUS BOX (Shapeshifters Remix) George Michael
Sometimes, all it takes is the RIGHT remix to make a song click. I wasn't very keen on George's Patience CD when it came out in 2004, it was a big let down from the excellent singles "Amazing" and "Flawless (Go To The City)", both of which made my Top 10 of 2004. This song just sat there unremarkably like a brick. But someone didn't give up on it, and now, almost two years after Patience debuted comes an outstanding Shapeshifters remix that's just plain irresistible. I think perhaps it owes the tip of the hat to inspiration from past hits by the production team called Full Intention, so it has a 70's meets 90's vibe. Do check this out, if only to find out how a dull record can be reshaped (in this case "shapeshifted"! ).
FOR YOU I WILL (CONFIDENCE) Teddy Geiger
Teddy's a young and very genuine talent from Rochester NY who reminds me a lot of Toronto's own Liam Titcomb. He's 17 with a terrific raspy voice that fits in right with the John Mayer-Tyler Hilton crowd. His debut CD Underage Thinking will be out soon. Teddy's also featured in the new TV show Love Monkey on CBS. I checked it out last week, not impressed with the show, so I'll look forward to more music from Teddy.
FEEL THE VIBE (TIL THE MORNING COMES) Axwell
Axwell is a Swedish DJ whose real name is Axel Hedfors, who appeared late last year on this chart with the #7 "Watch The Sunrise", featuring vocalist Steve Edwards. I believe this single was actually released before that song, but it's one that's been in my back pocket for a couple of months now and is more of a fit now than last year. The relentless groove is the thing about this record. Watch for this guy to break out in a big way sometime soon.
YO (EXCUSE ME MISS) Chris Brown
Never did I expect a song called "Yo" to appear on this chart, but here it is courtesy of Mr. "Run It" himself, 16 year old Chris Brown. While the latter song wore on me quickly, this mid-tempo tune is sincere and features a great vocal. Give this guy a few more records and he will be a superstar.
NO WORRIES Simon Webbe
One Simon song exits (#12 "Lay Your Hands") to make room for another decent Simon song. It features a terrific vocal that sounds like a sample, but it was actually made to sound that way for this record. It works much better than the sped-up sample on "Lay Your Hands", so we'll see if "No Worries" can charm its way past the #12 peak of that song.
