DEFTONES LAND SECOND BURNER 50 #1 WITH INSURGENT GLOBALCHART HIT
San Diego alternative metal band Deftones, pioneers of heavy shoegaze and an influence on countless Unkiecore artists, were probably the last band you'd expect to define a moment in the pop-centric M4B community. But that's what happened with their latest single. “My Mind Is A Mountain”, released a month ago to support their upcoming 10th album Private Music, garnered enough support from the M4B community in its first 10 days of release to debut all the way at #5 on the Globalchart, becoming just the third song to debut in the top 5 in its 27-year history. (The others were Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” and the Beatles’ “Now And Then”.) Since peaking at #3, the song is by far Deftones’ best peak on M4B - and now it's their second Burner 50 #1.
“Mountain” climbs 2-1 to end the seven-week reign of Flawed Mangoes’ “Surreal” (which drops 1-2), benefiting from increasing play and the impact of the song's unlikely insurgent success on the Globalchart, where community darlings like Kelly Clarkson and Carly Rae Jepsen are more likely to rank in the high end. (In contrast: Clarkson's best peak here was #14, Jepsen's was #24.) It now becomes Deftones' second chart topper following 2020's “Genesis”, the second single from their previous album Ohms; last week it became their fifth top 2 peaker, joining the aforementioned “Genesis” and former #2s “Prayers/Triangles”, the Jerry Cantrell collab “Phantom Bride”, and “Ohms”.
Rise Against holds at a career best #3 peak with “I Want It All”, Citizen sneaks into the top 5 with a 6-4 move for “Nail In Your Hand”, and Wisp's former #2 “Save Me Now” falls 4-5 to round out the top 5. Besides Deftones, there's movement from another insurgent M4B hit: Canadian folk rocker Kathleen Edwards jumps 14-10 with “Save Your Soul”, a collaboration with the alternative country musician Jason Isbell that recently became a Globalchart and M4B Radio Top 40 top 10.
Chappell Roan has the week's top debut with “The Subway” at #39, which follows “Good Luck, Babe!” as her second top 50 entry.
