IRON MAIDEN FRONTMAN TOPS CHART WITH SOLO ENTRY AFTER 3 WEEKS AT #2
Bruce Dickinson, singer of Iron Maiden, tops the Burner 50 after three weeks of nearly missing in the runner up spot as “Afterglow Of Ragnarok” climbs to #1 to become his first chart leader with or without the band that made him famous. “Ragnarok” benefited from consistent strong play in the last month, success as an M4B crossover hit (it reached #1 a week after hitting the same peak on Jessica's Top 40) and news of an upcoming Book Club episode themed around Dickinson’s solo work. Adding to Dickinson's big week on the chart, the followup single "Rain On The Graves" is the week's top debut at #34.
“Ragnarok” - its title inspired by a Norse mythological concept for the end of the world - is the lead track from Dickinson’s first solo album in 19 years, The Mandrake Project, centered on the story of a man involved in a project to take the human soul at the point of death and place it in something else. Even before the song topped the chart, it outpeaked Maiden's highest appearances, “Speed Of Light” (#6) and “The Writing On The Wall” (#7).
"Afterglow Of Ragnarok" also breaks a record that numerous songs have tried and failed to break in the last five years: the chart's longest #1 song, clocking in at five minutes and 45 seconds. The previous record holder, 2019's "Antitype" by the Intersphere, is five minutes and 28 seconds. Since then, several top 5 songs have tried and failed to beat the record: Fireworks' "Demitasse" (#4, 6:34), the Night Flight Orchestra's "Transmissions" (#2, 5:44), Rina Sawayama's "Enter Sandman" (#5, 5:33), My Chemical Romance's "The Foundations Of Decay" (#4, 6:00), Greg Puciato's "Never Wanted That" (#2, 5:29), Ozzy Osbourne's "Patient No. 9" (#3, 7:21) and Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" (#5, 8:35).
Pile Of Love drop to #2 after two weeks in the lead with "Happy To Hide", but they still remain in contention; NewDad holds the #3 spot for a second week with "Nightmares", the Foo Fighters' former #1 "The Glass" continues hanging on in the top 5 at #4, and Duff McKagan re-enters the top 5 with former #1 "I Just Don't Know" rebounding 6-5. As expected, Real Estate's "Water Underground" (11-7) and the Lemon Twigs' "My Golden Years" (15-10) enter the top 10 following strong Check 'Em Out hype.
