BIG TOP 10 SHIFTS THREATEN HEAVENWARD REIGN AS "TANGERINE" GETS THIRD WEEK AT #1
The upper end of my chart experiences a lot of noteworthy shifts this week, especially in a hyper-competitive top 10, where after weeks of strong play from holdovers, two new songs enter the top 10 and another re-enters, including an unexpected top 3 boost from a sleeper hit. Heavenward still manages to hold strongly at #1 with "Tangerine" for a third week, successfully fending off last week's challenge from the Armed, while Fiddlehead move into the runner-up spot with "Sleepyhead" becoming their third top 2 hit with a 3-2 move.
In the most unexpected move of the week, the sleeper hit "Just Pretend" by Bad Omens instantly becomes a #1 contender with a 13-3 move in its fourth week. The Virginia metalcore band released the song in 2022, but it took off this year when it went viral on TikTok in the spring and it recently hit #1 on the alternative radio charts; I first heard it via the Phoenix alternative station Alt AZ 93.3 during a listening binge in an attempt to win concert tickets, and it won me over for its similarity to Boston Manor.
Elsewhere in the top 10, Guns N' Roses advance to a new peak of #4 with "Perhaps", Pinkshift rebounds to its #8 peak with "Home" helped in part from huge jumps on Jess and Kim's charts, and JessieLou lands her second top 10 from the self-titled era with "Run Away To New York City" up 12-10.
Among the week's top 20 moves is a team-up between two indie bands that brings them both into the upper end of my chart for the first time in five years following multiple disappointing follow-ups. Portugal. The Man's "Summer Of Luv" featuring Unknown Mortal Orchestra jumps 24-17, marking a significant recovery for both bands. Portugal. The Man hasn't appeared in the top 20 since "Live In The Moment", the proper followup to the massive "Feel It Still" (the Burner 50's #1 song of 2017), peaked at #2 in early 2018. Unknown Mortal Orchestra's last top 20 appearances happened around that same time, when "American Guilt" and "Hunnybee" peaked at #2 and #16, respectively.
Cursetheknife has the week's highest of four debuts with their third entry "Thrall" at #36.
