The week proves to be an exciting chart week with 6 new entries, including the highest debut of the year, big moves, big fallers, a new number one, and two new records set. Hold onto your seats, we have a lot of ground to cover!
Of the six entries, two are by Danes, who would have guessed?? At #50 is a Danish woman who has hit my chart once before. Lene Marlin would have placed several singles within my top 10 had I been charting when Aqua was still around. As a solo artist, she only managed to take "Another Day" to #44 last year. Now she comes in with "How Would It Be?" The second new entry comes in at #47. It's the first hit for a young French woman, Marilou, and the 6th for Garou from Québec. It's interesting to note that he other duet partner with whom he made my chart, Michel Sardou, also has a name rhyming with Garou. Coincidence?? At #45 is one of the more successful American act on my chart in the two years. In that time, they have now had 7 songs reach the Top 50, 4 of which have made the Top 10. As "Don't Lie" slides down the chart, "My Humps" makes its entrance. At #41 is the other Danish act to make the chart this week, Infernal. They enter with their single, "From Paris to Berlin" which is a hit in Germany. Dannii Minogue comes in at #39 this week with her latest, "Perfection", marking her 4th chart single. The highest debut this week is the highest debut of the year, and actually of the past two years. Will Young's first single off his second album, "Leave Right Now" was the last single to debut in the Top 10, entering at #4 in October 2003. Now Will does one better. The first single from his upcoming third CD blasts onto the chart at #3. I would say he has a good chance of hitting the top in the next week or two This is now Will Young's 16th song to make the Top 50 with only two B-sides failing to reach the Top 10.
Of the two records set this week, one is a good record to hold, while the other is a bit more dubious. In her 39th week on the chart, British singer, Natasha Bedingfield now holds the record for longest time a song has spent on my chart, besting the Dixie Chicks' "Landslide" by a week. However, the Dixie Chicks' 38 weeks is still impressive, especially given the fact they accomplished it in one chart run. The second record set this week goes to Éric Lapointe. To date, no song has ever fallen from #1 out of the Top 5, until this week. "La Bartendresse" after having returned to #1 last week for a third non-consecutive week, falls this week to #6.
Three songs fly up more than ten spots on the chart this week. t.A.T.u. move up 12 to #31, Liberty X move up 15 to #20, and the biggest mover goes to Melanie C. as "First Day of My Life" moves 16 places to #21 in only its second week on the chart. Her previous hit, "Better Alone" is still holding onto a bullet within the Top 10.
Speaking of the Top 10, Kelly Clarkson edges up one to #10 to land her 8th Top 10 song. All four of her songs from her most recent album have gone Top 10. Rachel Stevens continues her march towards the top. She's determined to have her first #1 as "I Said Never Again" jumps 4 places to #5 giving her her second Top 5 single. Marie-Mai isn't giving up either, as "Encore Une Nuit" moves up one place to #4. Sheryl Crow has to settle for bride's maid status once again with "Good Is Good". Sugababes leap-frog over her to land at #1 with "Push the Button", a song which looks set to enter at #1 in the UK tomorrow. This is now the Babes' 4th #1 single. How long will they hold on to the top?? Sheryl and Will are hot on their tails. Stop back next week to find out.
