Going forward, I'm thinking the "A" genre tag should be changed to be used for Alternative music, instead of music that is sent to Adult Contemporary radio. The Adult Contemporary radio format no longer has it's signature "soft rock" sound, and instead plays many of the exact same songs played on mainstream Pop radio.
Also, many years ago, almost all Alternative music was Rock music. That's no longer the case, so having another genre tag for Alternative music would be useful.
It also seems like many people have been forgetting that the "A" tag is for "Adult Contemporary" and using "A" for "Alternative" anyway.
We have very rarely ever used the Adult Contemporary tag. So, I think changing it would cause minimal confusion.
Anyway, let me know your thoughts on this...

I'd say AC. R (for rock) or I (for indie) do encompass a lot of what is defined as alternative.

I'll go with Adult Contemporary. I would agree that Alternative can normally be categorized under Rock or Indie.

There isn't much, if anything Alternative these days that couldn't be classified as Indie, so I think AC works well.

True, most alternative is either rock or indie. I don't care one way or other what the "A" tag is used for. I just thought I'd bring it up since the A tag is rarely used, and when it is used, it seems like it's getting confused for Alternative instead of AC. Case in point, Bryan used the "AR" tag for the new Chris Cornell single-- freakyflybry.proboards.com/thread/68671/chris-cornell-patience-ar^I don't believe this song was sent to Adult Contemporary radio and it definitely sounds Alternative. I've noticed other examples of this as well. Do a search for "(AR)" and you'll see countless examples of what I'm talking about. Hinder, Theory of a Deadman, Pearl Jam, Weezer, and about 50 others were all posted with the "A" tag. The members posting these songs had to have been thinking the "A" was for Alternative, as there is no way that most of the songs from those artists would get played on AC radio. I guess my point is that if most people are going to use the tag incorrectly, why not just change it?

A for alternative. AC for Adult Contemporary.

I'll chime in with A for Alternative and AC for Adult Contemporary. I think the radio industry still uses AC or they even break it down to Hot AC.

The way the tags work, they can only be single letters, so the AC for Adult Contemporary isn't going to work. When tags are combined, it means that a song is a mix of two genres, so AC would mean that a song is both Adult Contemporary and Country.
