A little shower thought here:
Is it just me, or have our tastes collectively become more divided over the years?
Back in the day, we'd often have the big Pop, Alternative and Hot AC hits on our charts together, along with message board favourites that many of us would chart collectively. However, these days, I've noticed a lot more of a split.
For instance, there isn't a single song that is on at least half of the Globalchart panel, not a single unifier that a majority of the members can agree on. Additionally, a lot of our breakout songs that aren't charting nationally are only appearing on a very few charts, or just one... there doesn't seem to be a lot of rallying towards charting breakout songs on many members' charts at once.
Case in point: When I met Courage and JessieLou in 2014, we had a lot of common ground and were able to put the same song on top of each other's charts during our infamous "chart swap". However, just a year later, we didn't have as much common ground, so when we went to do the chart swap again, we couldn't come anywhere near a consensus as we were all mostly charting different songs!
I do admit that I still get several songs from my chart from other members, though lately, my sources have become mostly self-sufficient, including Youtube recommendations, and Spotify playlists, including the personalized Release Radar, which is based on what I might like based on what I have already listened to. However, something I never thought would happen has been happening lately - traditionally, only one or two songs of my top 10 (usually Kate Voegele album tracks) would be on my chart and nobody else's. However, for what I believe is the first time, over half of my top 10 (6 songs this week) are solely on my chart out of all the members here. Granted, they are all either album tracks or CanCon (or in one case, both), but still, that is a lot, especially for someone such as myself who in the past has usually charted stuff that has either made official charts or other members' personal charts, as many of my more obscure top 10 hits were hits on other personal charts as well. Plus, with IMO the quality of a lot of the pop hits declining (I believe 23 out of the current top 50 pop hits have not made my chart), it does leave a lot less room for overlap with other members as big pop hits have tended to create a lot of common ground between otherwise unrelated members.
Any other thoughts?
