Happy 74th Birthday to the Honorable JUDITH BLUM LEVY SHEINDLIN, more commonly known as Judge Judy!
Born on October 21, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish-American family, Judith Blum Levy Sheindlin is best known as the host of "Judge Judy", an arbitration-based court show which has been broadcast in syndication since 1996. I remember having watched my very first episode of Judge Judy on August 30, 2000 (which I recorded on VHS, and still have to this day, even though I no longer own a VCR!) I've been a huge fan ever since.
I've learned more, not just about law, but about common sense, from faithfully watching Judge Judy on a daily basis for the past 16 years. I live my life based on her logic, and try to navigate every difficult situation by simply asking the question, "what would Judge Judy do?" I find myself agreeing with Judge Judy nearly all the time, particularly with regard to her opinion on the allocation of taxpayer dollars, and the great waste thereof.
A recent survey revealed that 1 in 10 college students in America, when asked to name one of our nine (at the time, presently there are eight) Supreme Court justices, responded with Judge Judy. How I wish that were true! One of the joys of owning my own septic cleaning company as that I've taken today off as a holiday, in Judge Judy's honor, and yes, even my customers have it grayed out on the service calendars I send out at the beginning of the year! For me, the birthday of Judge Judy is far more significant than that of George Washington, Christopher Columbus or Martin Luther King, none of which I observe.
Some bits of common sense I've learned from "JJ" over the years (far from a complete list):
- If you tell the truth, you don't have to have a good memory.
- If it doesn't make sense, it isn't true.
- If it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, it's a duck. And if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's most likely not a toy poodle.
- Beauty fades, but stupid is forever.
- Nobody gives a gift to someone and says "it's a gift."
- Nobody gives money back to the government.
- No six-year-old child uses the word "physically."
- "Um" is not an answer.
And perhaps her best-known quote:
"I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!"
