As most of you know, while I've always been a fan of Grace Slick, it wasn't until spring 2013 when I realized that she is actually the most amazing artist in the history of forever. On this board, we are often theatrical with our liking and disliking of artists (take my current username for example), but I'm here to provide a serious, well thought-out post about why I personally believe Grace Slick is the queen of music and has been more good than bad for popular music over the past six decades. I realize most of you will disagree with almost everything I say, but you all suck, I mean, hopefully we can debate these points in a civilized and intelligent manner.
1. She has experimented with different sounds - In the 60's she was the psychedelic acid queen, in the 70's she did hard rock ("Hot Water", "Fast Buck Freddie") and soft rock ("Love Too Good", "Play On Love"), in the 80's she was a pop star with three huge #1 hits. WHO else had as much musical variety as her?
2. She paved the way for other great ladies - Grace Slick is the first lady of rock and roll. Some may argue Janis Joplin was, but if you do your homework you will find out that Grace's first album with Jefferson Airplane came out two months before the first Big Brother & Holding Company album. If it wasn't for Grace, we would not have Pat Benatar, Ann & Nancy Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Carole King, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, Shirley Manson, Courtney Love, Dolores O'Riordan, Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, Linda Perry, Amy Lee, Grace Potter, or Florence Welch.
3. She ruined the careers of mediocre artists - Have you ever noticed that John Denver and Helen Reddy, constant hitmakers of the early to mid 70's, started flopping after Jefferson Starship released "Miracles"? When that song came out, people did not tolerate mediocrity anymore and geezers had to step up their game. Why do you think Helen Reddy's one great song came out the following year?!
4. She’s unique and original – Unfortunately, the YouTube video of this was taken down, but in the summer of 2013 I watched a PBS interview with Grace from 1983 where she was asked what she wanted to do during her career in the future. She was a huge fan of music videos and said that she wanted to create a “video album”, an album where every song has a music video. Later that year Beyonce’ did that with her self titled album. BEYONCE’ STEALING FROM THE GREATS YET AGAIN!!
5. She’s hilarious – Don’t believe me? Just watch:
(go to around the 37-minute mark)
Also, she once told a religious nurse that she was going to name her child “god” (with a lowercase G because she “wanted the child to be humble”), just to f*ck with her. Her daughter’s real name is China.
6. She’s the original unapologetic bitch – She’s said in many interviews that she does NOT like people telling her what to do. She does her own thing and doesn’t give a f*ck what other people have to say. This is a woman who almost gave Nixon LSD, took her top off during an outdoor concert when it was raining because she did not want to ruin her expensive blouse, and reminded her audience at a concert in Hamburg, Germany that they lost World War II, by flat out singing, “WHO WON THE WAR?” She’s batshit crazy and I love her for that!
7. Her voice is amazing – I love a distinctive, powerful voice. NOBODY sounds like Grace. Just listen to her voice on songs like these:
8. She’s talented in areas outside of music – She’s also a very talented painter and has painted portraits of artists like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, and even her own band Jefferson Airplane. She also wrote the greatest autobiography of all time. WHEN WILL YOUR FAVES?!
