Of all the choices given, Madonna is the only artist whose career truly spans the entire past 30 years.

I'm with Sebastian. Speaking as someone whose favorite female performer is Janet Jackson, the only answer to VH1's question is Madonna. Period. End of discussion. No one else on that list comes close to her career, the hits she had, and the level of popularity she had. I think she's fallen off (with a rather loud thump) the past four or five years, but she's still #1 in my book by a LARGE margin. LMFAO at Britney Spears currently being #1. It figures that's who the majority would vote for. For me, Britney MIGHT be in the Top 10, but she wouldn't even be in my Top 5 of the women VH1 lists for that question...and neither would Lady Gaga (the current #2). It's a sad commentary on people's knowledge of music history that Madonna is currently #3 in that poll. I weep for humanity.

In all seriousness I would agree that nobody in this poll, not even my beloved Alanis, comes close to Madonna. In my world though Grace would be #1. I don't know whether or not they have plans to air this on TV, but if they do, I won't be watching as I've stopped watching any VH1 Countdowns after they fixed the America's Hard 100 in 2012. Also, like Jason said, the results are ridiculous. Gaga #2? Are the 12-year-old "music experts" from Pulse voting for this??

Much to my surprise, Janet has been voted the overall winner!

I'm happy about this (obviously lol!). Janet has had a pretty great career full of great songs, hits, and a lot of accolades. All of that said, I still think it should've been Madonna (with Janet in 2nd place). But at the end of the day, since the poll was about a span of time of 30 years, I'm just glad that someone who has only been releasing popular singles for 15 of those years (Britney) or 5 of those years (Lady Gaga) didn't win. To me, that would've been unfortunate.
