Which popular Alternative solo female who achieved success on the format in the 90s is the best. Feel free to rank them in a list.

Gotta have a patriotic Canadian vote for Alanis here, though I do like many of the songs by the choices given.

For me, it's incredibly close between Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette. They both have particular significance for me as "All I Wanna Do" and "Ironic" are both among the first dozen or so songs I can remember from the actual time in which they were popular. Moreover, "Ironic" was the very first MTV video I ever watched, in January 1996.
I have to go with Sheryl because I consider everything from Alanis after 1998 to be mediocre.
1. Sheryl 2. Alanis 3. Natalie 4. Sinead 5. Tori 6. Bjork 7. Fiona 8. Sarah
I don't know who Poe is.

I went with Sheryl Crow. I think if Sheryl is considered Alternative, then Melissa Etheridge also belongs on the list. She'd be a close second behind Sheryl with Alanis Morissette third. Natalie Imbruglia fourth. And Sinead O'Connor fifth (she'd be higher, but the only song of hers that I know is "Nothing Compares 2 U").

Yeah I was going by artists who actually charted on BB Alt/Modern Rock. Etheridge did, and I thought about putting her on, though I plan on doing a Mainstream Rock/Active Rock poll like this too, and she belongs there more than she does on Alternative.

Oh no, where is PJ Harvey? She would be what I call 'the epitome of alternative in the 90's'! Anyway, no need to make it clearer, Tori Amos is by far my favorite in the list. I find it funny that if music wasn't so pop-dance oriented these days, maybe what Tori makes nowadays, might still be called alternative. I don't really like calling her pop but whatever! Then, Björk, Sarah and Fiona, in that order. Björk is amazing. Sarah has some amazing songs, Afterglow is flawless, and to a degree, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy as well, some songs from Afterglow, but mostly the rest of her catalogue is mediocre. Fiona, she is great as well, but Extraordinary Machine stained her career for me, such a bad album. Natalie and then Alanis. Natalie is good, and she certainly has some songs I would still call alternative these days, but having heard only her first two albums in full and then, the singles from others, I think she is not as consistent as she was at the beginning. Alanis, like Sebastian pointed, might have had some great songs after 1998, but mostly, after SFIJ, she sucked. Sheryl, I just detest. Poe, never interested me. Sinead, I thought her music was weak over a decade ago, but I never bothered to follow her career since then.
