This is something I did over on Media Source for a brief time, and now I'm bringing it back. The concept is simple; I post about a different city everyday. The cities will be of all sizes and from all areas of the world.
I'll start doing this with a city for Monday, January 2nd which will be coming in just a little while.

January 2nd, 2012 - San Deigo, CaliforniaThe Coronado bridge: 7 Facts About San Diego: 1) You might not hear about this city very often, but it is quite big. With over 1.3 million residents, it is the 8th most populated city in the U.S. That puts it ahead of Detroit, Miami and other more well known U.S. cities. 2) San Diego is known for being the safest big city in the United States. Crime rates are very low. 3) You will have a hard time finding a city with a climate more steady than that of San Diego. The average high in the warmest month of August is 77F (25C), just 12 degrees warmer than the average high in its coldest month of December. 4) The city was the first European settlement on the West Coast. 5) The city is home to the only major submarine and shipbuilding yards on the West Coast. 6) If you're a fan of Asian food, you'll have no problem finding good eats in San Diego. In a city with a large Asian population, restaurants featuring the cuisines of China, Thailand, Japan and others are easy to find. 7) Once a part of Mexico, it is home to many Mexican-Americans. Spanish is widely spoken.

January 3rd, 2011 - Shanghai, ChinaA view of Shanghai in 1990: The same view, in 2010: Crowded street: Smog: A shopping district in Shanghai: Some views of indoor shopping areas: Residential high-rises: I sure hope this isn't an everyday thing... 7 Facts About Shanghai: 1. Shanhai is the most populated city on earth, with over 17.8 million residents. The next cloest city would be Istanbul, Turkey, which clocks in with roughly 13.2 million. The Shanhai metro area is the 10th largest in the world (if you're curious, the Tokyo metro area is #1 with over 32 million people). 2) The city is widely considered the busiest port city in the world, and is home to the world's busiest container port, Shanghai Port. 3) Its climate is comparable to that of Washington, D.C, with the exception that snowfall is rather uncommon in Shanghai. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are chilly. 4) The minority population grew 165% during the '00s. However, minorities still only make up 1.2% of the population. 5) Shanghai dates back to the 10th century. 6) Tourists are strongly urged to not rent a car. The public transportation system is easy to use, and more advanced than the systems found in many Western cities. 7) Smog is a big problem here, but thankfully the levels have been receding in recent years.

Two interesting choices there!
I'd love to visit both at some point, San Diego seems quite interesting, and different from other California cities! And Shanghai sounds like a good jumping-on point for exploring China, and looks like they got a Times Square-type light development there!

I agree with you on both! I always laugh when people tell me they want to live in LA. If I was going to live in SoCal, I'd choose the city that has less crime, less pollution and better culture.
As for Shanghai, it's the everyday stuff (freeway systems, huge shopping centers) that wow me the most.

January 4th, 2012 - Edmonton, Alberta, CanadaThe West Edmonton Mall: 5 Facts About Edmonton: 1) Edmonton is home to over 700,000 people. The metro area is home to over 1 million, or roughly one third of Alberta's population. 2) Edmonton was established in the 1890s, though Native peoples had inhabited the area for thousands of years. 3) The city experiences very cold winters, and even the summers can be chilly during the night. The record high for the city is a modest 94F (35C), but the all-time record low is a bone-chilling -55F (-48C). 4) The city is perhaps most famous for having one of the world's most amazing malls, the West Edmonton Mall. This is home to World Waterpark, the largest indoor water park in the world. 5) The city is home to the Oilers, one of professional hockey's most storied teams. Maybe someone else can help me get up to my usual number.

Considering I only live 5 hours away from Edmonton, I do go there fairly frequently. Of course, West Edmonton Mall is the most visited attraction there for me, if only due to all the attractions it has (I love their Galaxyland amusement park!), as well as a lot of stores that aren't available elsewhere in this region of Canada (often, they do get the first crack at several American stores that are testing the Canadian market.) Sites like the TELUS World of Science and the Royal Alberta Museum have been enjoyable for me, and Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona offers a totally different experience with unique stores, bars, restaurants, etc. Definitely caters to the university crowd there. I usually end up going there to stock up on IKEA supplies as it's the closest location for me.

I had a friend from Edmonton who failed Grade 10 because he spent all his days at West Edmonton Mall. And if you've ever been there, you can't say you blame him.

January 5th, 2012 - Rio de Janeiro, BrazilSome views of the beaches: 7 Facts About Rio de Janeiro: 1) Rio is the most visited city in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as one of its most populated, with nearly 6 million residents. 2) The city was founded by Portuguese settlers in the 1560s, some 40 years before the English set up shop in the storied settlement of Jamestown, Virgina. The Portuguese owned Brazil as a colony until the nation achieved independence in 1822 -- after 322 years of colonial rule. 3) The city is considered to be very important in the gay community, and attracts over 1 million LGBT tourists each year. 4) Being in the Southern Hemisphere, Rio has its winters from June-September and its summers from December-March. However, there is not much difference in temperatures between the two seasons. 5) Rio de Janeiro is hosting arguably the two biggest sporting events in the world during the next five years; the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2016 Summer Olympics. 6) Street food is very popular here and can be found everywhere, especially near beaches. 7) If you ever visit Rio, make sure to do your research to not go anywhere dangerous. The city has very high crime and homocide rates, largely due to drug trafficking.

Rio De Janeiro would definitely be a great place to visit, especially around carnival time... that would be crazy! That first picture viewing the city from the Christ the Redeemer statue is very scenic. ;D

^Oh yeah, I'd love that too! A guy I know from my school says he's going to go there for the 2014 World Cup, even if he ends up being totally broke because of it.
