Yes it is nearly unbelievable that 5SOS hasn't been on my chart for four years. And yes I not even charted "Amnesia", but maybe with "Want you back" they get a little bit of fame here.

Week 367 – March 10^th, 2018

This weekend I’m celebrating the 7th birthday of my chart. The first #1 had been “July July” by Austrian band Any Major Dude. Seven years later this band had disbanded, but a real superstar took over my chart. After a two week reign by Luke Sital-Singh it was time for Kylie Minogue to get her 1st #1 on my chart. “Dancing” did the last step with a 1 spot climb. Up two spots is “Bad bad drug” (#2) by Kate Voegele. So much is betrayed that last week’s Kate Voegele triple is blown up with this climb. Last week at #1 this week at #3 is “Killing me” by Luke Sital-Singh. His other Top 10 smash “Still” (#4) is one spot behind. Closing the Top 5 is Kate Voegele with her former #1 “Shoot this arrow” (#5).

The 2nd half of the Top 10 is opened with the third Kate Voegele song. “Crooked road” (#6) is rather stable with a neither climb nor drop week. Norwegian Sigrid climbed up two spots with her recent hit “Strangers” (#7). She is followed by the first of two new songs in my Top 10. Last week I speculated about songs which could end in my Top 10. This week two of these songs really reached this part and the first one is “The middle” (#8) by Zedd & Maren Morris feat. Grey. The other one is “Hurt somebody” (#10) by Noah Kahan & Julia Michaels. Caught between these songs is “Alles sind wird” (#9, “Everything are we”) by Tagtraeumer.

This week sees 12 new entries. The highest new entry is by a core artist whose last album was a little bit of a disappointment. Italian Emma recently released her 5th album “Essere qui” (“To be here”). Her first single had been “L’isola” (#13, “The island”) which is now near the Top 10 in its 9th week on chart. This week her 2nd single “Effetto domino” (#33, “Domino effect”) debuts. “Effetto domino” is a very good single choice from my point of view. It is a nice song with a remarkable sound and a catchy refrain. This song maybe marks a big Top 10 return for her, because of the fact that I recently bought this new album (which is now my fourth from her) which is definitely better than “Adesso” (“Now”). In the course of this purchase I also bought another album in Italian which is “Bye bye” by Annalisa. Her latest single “Il mondo prima di te” (#80, “The world before you”) debuted last week and climbed ten spots this week.

The 2nd highest debut is by another core artist. Over the last two weeks “Wild hearts can’t be broken” (#32) had been the greatest gainer of the week. This week the greatest gainer is “I don’t think about you” (#23) by Kelly Clarkson. But back to the 2nd highest debut which is by Pink. After “Beautiful trauma” (#18) failed to reach the top spots on the international charts Pink now released “Whatever you want” (#41) as a regular single. I definitely like this song and I hope that “Whatever you want” and “Wild hearts can’t be broken” will reach my Top 10. “Whatever you want” is followed by another debut. British DJ Sigala returns with singer Paloma Faith. Their latest song “Lullaby” (#42) has everything which I think a hit needs and so you shouldn't wonder if this song will end in my Top 20 at least.

Other debuts are “Immer noch fühlen” (#55, “Still feeling”) by Revolverheld, “When we were us” (#56) by Bon Jovi, “In and out” (#57) and “Aquarius” (#90) by Leslie Clio, “No excuses” (#86) by Meghan Trainor, “Tequila” (#88) by Dan + Shay, “Tetris” (#96) by Madilyn Bailey, “Himmel voller Geigen” (#97, “Sky full of violins”) by Matthias Reim and “Tausend und eine Nacht” (#98, “Thousand and one night”) by German schlager band Lichtblick.

I think I prefer 'Aquarius' but I've only heard live versions of 'In And Out' so far

"Aquarius" maybe has the better lyrics, but I am not really into the sound of the song. So I think that I will go with "In and out" in the long run.

Week 368 – March 17^th, 2018

Last week Kylie Minogue took over my chart for the first time in her career. “Dancing” (#1) climbed up one spot to outperform “Killing me” (#3) by Luke Sital-Singh. Kylie Minogue defended her title with “Dancing” and is leading the non moving Top 5. So Kate Voegele is still at the runner’s up position with “Bad bad drug” (#2). “Still” (#4) just missed the Top 3 once again and former Kate Voegele #1 “Shoot this arrow” (#5) is completing the Top 5.

The first song which climbed up this week is “Strangers” (#6) by Sigrid. Also up one spot is “The middle” (#7) by Zedd feat. Maren Morris & Grey. The only other moving song within the Top 10 is “Hurt somebody” (#8) by Noah Kahan & Julia Michaels which climbed up two spots. Next in line is the third Kate Voegele song “Crooked road” (#9) which dropped three spots this week. With a nice leap into the Top 10 Hayley Kiyoko can celebrate her first Top 10 smash with “Curious” (#10).

This week sees 11 debuts and more than 50 % of these new entries can be found within my Top 50 and two songs just missed this part of my chart. The highest new entry is by Australian singer Jessica Mauboy. She only had some smaller hits before as “Inescapable” (peaked at #46 in 2011), “Beautiful” (peaked at #43 in 2014), “This ain’t love” (peaked at #90 in 2015) and “The day before I met you” (peaked at #99 in 2015). This week she returns very strong with “We got love” (#37). This is the Australian song for the Eurovision Song Contest. I really have the feeling that Australia is trying to win this contest with their song choices since the first appeared three years ago in Vienna. Jessica Mauboy could do as well as Dami Im with “Sound of silence” (I never charted this song) back in 2016.

The 2nd best debut is by Irish singer and former One Direction member Niall Horan. In the last half year he had a Top 10 hit with “Too much to ask”. This week he returns with his latest single which I hadn’t given a lot of attention over the previous weeks. Now I gave this song a chance and “On the loose” (#39) gave him another Top 40 smash with a positive outlook. The next debut is by Zak Abel. You may ask Zak who? Since 2014 Zak Abel released a bunch of singles which all failed to chart. His only hit in the UK had been “Unmissabel” which peaked at #19. So I would understand if you’ve never heard of him. I discovered his 2017 single “All I ever do (is say goodbye)” (#40) last week and I really like this song. And here he is with a Top 40 debut.

The next debut is by the artist who is topping my chart at the moment. Kylie Minogue’s 2nd single “Stop me from falling” (#42) from her country/electronic pop album “Golden” is starting very solid. But you all remember the “Dancing” performance and so “Stop me from falling” could also do well. The next debut is the comeback single by a British singer who has three UK #1’s in her pocket. Six years ago Alexandra Burke released her 2nd album “Heartbreak on hold” and finally this month she returns with her follow up album “The truth is”. The first single out of this album is “Shadow” (#45) which is a beautiful comeback single. I hope that this song will work for her, but as this single had been released early in February without getting noticed it seems that only a handful people will listen to this track. Caught between all these new songs is the greatest gainer of the week “In and out” (#38) by Leslie Clio.

Other debuts are “Nothing but you” (#50) by Cesár Sampson, “Medicine” (#51) and “Meaning of life” (#52) by Kelly Clarkson, “Together we are weak” (#91) by Shirin, “Just like that” (#92) by The Aces and “Come through” (#93) by The Regrettes.

I am SO excited to be seeing Jess perform this live at Eurovision (provided she makes the final)! She's hit the top of my chart twice with "Falling" and "Never Be The Same" in the past and I'm pretty sure "We Got Love" will do extremely well also in the coming months.

Yesterday I gave all the songs for the contest a first listen and I've to admit her song is definitely the best beside songs from Croatia, Cyprus, Germany and Finland. Nethertheless I think she will win and London will host next year. I like the song we are sending but I doubt that "Nobody but you" will do well.

Kylie should do well for the next few weeks too and then Kelly or maybe Emma will take over.

Sweden is always in a good position for a win. Insofar they should do well this year too, but for the moment I don't like this song. Possibly the show will change it.

Since I started charting again I try to listen to ever song which had been in the preselection. More or less every year there are songs which didn't made it to the contest, but which I like and chart. This year is no exception. I will write some information about these songs in my next week's review.

Week 369 – March 24^th, 2018

This week is characterized with the same #1 as last week, one new song in the Top 10, ten new songs in general and several debuts which are associated with the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. But let’s start with my Top 10 as every week. Kylie Minogue is defending the title with “Dancing” (#1) for a third week. One more week and this song could outperform “Shoot this arrow” (#3) by Kate Voegele as longest lasting #1 this year. Caught between these two mentioned songs is another song by Kate Voegele. “Bad bad drug” (#2) is holding its spot for a third consecutive week. While former #1 “Shoot this arrow” is bouncing back into the Top 3 Luke Sital-Singh’s former #1’s “Killing me” (#4) and “Still” (#6) are dropping down. New in the Top 5 is Sigrid with “Strangers” (#5).

As you saw the second half of my Top 10 is opened with “Still” by Luke Sital-Singh. He is followed by two songs which are holding their spots. So “The middle” (#7) by Zedd & Maren Morris & Grey and “Hurt somebody” (#8) by Noah Kahan & Julia Michaels are non-movers. Next in line is last week’s Top 10 debut “Curious” (#9) by Hayley Kiyoko which climbed up one spot this week. And here the only Top 10 debut comes. It is another song by Kelly Clarkson who recently reached #1 with “Love so soft”. This week she returns with her latest single “I don’t think about you” (#10).

This week an interesting effect occurred on my chart. Last week I had so many debuts in the Top 50 that they are sticking around this week. Between #31 and #42 none of the songs moved up or down this week. So the greatest gainer of the week can be found outside the Top 50 this week. It is “Il mondo prima di te” (#65, “The world before you”) by Annalisa. Not far above the greatest gainer of the week the highest debut can be found. It is the comeback single by core artist Matt Cardle. The last time he charted had been back in 2015 with his album cuts “Porcelain” and “This trouble is ours”. Nearly two and a half year later he debuts with the first single “Desire” (#57) out of his new album “Time to be alive”. “Desire” is a good single choice and I’m sure that this song will end in my Top 10. This debut is followed by the new Taylor Swift single “Delicate” (#58).

Over the years I’ve charted several songs which participated in the Eurovision Song Contest and songs which tried in the national qualification rounds. Some of these songs ended in the Top 10 on my chart. The first and only Song Contest song which reached #1 had been “La mia città” (“My city”) back in 2014 by Italian core artist Emma who is awaited to reach #1 with her latest single “Effetto domino” (#21, “Domino effect”). But there are two more songs which reached 1# on my chart and which participated. Both songs failed in the national qualification round. One in Austria which had been “July July” by Any Major Dude back in 2011. One in Finland which had been “Crossroads” by Satin Circus back in 2015. These three songs are the highest ranked songs from this contest since 2011, but there are some other songs which reached my year-end Top 100 over the years. These songs are “Should’ve known better” (peaked at #10) by Soluna Samay from Guatemala for Denmark in 2012, “If you ever feel” (peaked at #10; failed to qualify) by Viky Red for Romania in 2012, “Birds” (peaked at #19) by Anouk for the Netherlands in 2013, “Shine” (peaked at #9) by Natália Kelly from the USA for Austria in 2013, “Glorious” (peaked at #7) by Cascada for Germany in 2013, “Busy doin’ nothin’ ” (peaked at #10; failed to qualify) by Ace Wilder for Sweden in 2014, “Goodbye to yesterday” (peaked at #4) by Elina Born & Stig Rästa for Estonia in 2015 and “Solange Liebe in mir wohnt” (“As long as love lives in me”; peaked at #18; failed to qualify) by Luxuslärm for Germany in 2016.

These are the songs representing this contest on my chart over the years, but the 2018 contest in Portugal is up to come in May. Of course there are several songs out of this 2018 contest which are trying to impress me. Over the last weeks songs from Germany, Austria and Australia got there debut. These songs are “You let me walk alone” (#49) by Michael Schulte, “House on fire” (#50; failed to qualify in Germany) by Ivy Quainoo, “Nobody but you” (#46) by Cesár Sampson and “We got love” (#37) by Jessica Mauboy. This week I gave all other songs a listen and five more songs are giving their debut. The highest one is “You and I” (#59; failed to qualify) by Armenian-Ukrainian Asmik Shiroyan for Armenia. Asmik Shiroyan rose to fame in Ukraine after participating in season four of “The Voice of Ukraine” in 2014. With “You and I” she participated for the second time in “Depi Evratisil” after 2017. In my eyes this song has the same star appeal as “We got love” from Australia, but Armenia decided to go with Sevak Khanagyan with “Qami” (“Wind”). The next debut is by Estonian Stig Rästa. He finished 2nd with “Home” (#77; failed to qualify) in “Eesti Laul 2018”. “Home” isn’t as good as “Goodbye to yesterday”, but definitely worth listening. Then there is “Crazy” (#78) by Croatian singer Franka. I hope that this song will have a good show, because the video is very good. Also very interesting is “Fuego” (#79) by Eleni Foureira. Eleni Foureira is from Albania, but emigrated to Greece during the Albanian Civila War in the 1990’s. In Greece she started her career and now she represents Cyprus in 2018. I think this is no bad choice for Cyprus to get the points from Greece and Albania. And last but not least there is a song from Finland. This year Finland had to decide between three songs by Saara Aalto. They decided to go with “Monsters” (#80) which I absolutely understand.

Other debuts are “Revolution” (#74) and “My brother” (#75) by MisterWives and “Shattered to piece” (#100) by Salems Lott.
