Week 168 – May 17^th, 2014

Over the last two years I had at least ten different #1’s from January to the middle of May. This year there only have been five different songs at the top of the chart. So I had just six #1 songs in the last half year and about 2/3 of the time these songs have been by Anouk or Emma. Ten weeks ago Anouk started her chart domination with “You & I” (#4) which topped the chart for four weeks. Last week Anouk’s “I won’t play that game” from her live album “Live at the Symphonica at Rosso” topped the chart for a sixth consecutive week which is a record for her. But this amazing run of ten consecutive weeks at the top ended this week. “I won’t play that game” (#3) dropped down two spots and made the way free for a new #1.

This year new isn’t immediately new. In my chart history this week sees the biggest comeback at #1. Not even for my first chart area I recognize such a big comeback. Austrian band Tagträumer who recently reached #1 on Austrian biggest radio station’s airplay chart had an amazing run at #1 back at the end of February when “Sinn” topped my chart for two weeks. Since February “Sinn” can be found within the Top 5. There are only three songs which spent more weeks within the Top 5 than “Sinn” including last year’s top songs “Torpedo” – which has recently been picked in the USA and reached a Top 50 spot in the HOT AC chart – by Jillette Johnson and “Receive” by Alanis Morissette. After a break of ten weeks “Sinn” climbed up back to #1 this week which has done no other song before. Sure “Love love love” by Avalanche City back in 2011, “Blue Jeans” by Lana Del Rey back in 2012 and “Receive” by Alanis Morissette back in 2013 returned at #1, but none of these songs had a break of ten weeks like “Sinn” by Tagträumer. And there is another record fact for the history books. There is no song including the debut #1’s – Matt Cardle’s “It’s only love” topped the chart for the first time in its 14th week – that a song topped the chart in its 18th week.

Beside this big change at the top of the chart the Top 10 didn’t see a lot of action this week. “Sinn’s” comeback at #1 is the only change in the Top 5 and there is only one new song in the Top 10. Austrian band Nihils had to leave with “Lovers on the run” (#14). They were replaced by Italian star Emma. Her Eurovision Song Contest song “La mia città” (#8) is now her 10th Top 10 hit out of 21 charting songs since her debut back in 2012. If it goes on like the previous months “La mia città” could be her next chart topper.

The greatest gainer of the week comes by another well known chart artist. Jillette Johnson is trying to conquer the USA with her brilliant “Torpedo” while her latest chart hit “Peter Pan” (#23) climbed up 15 spots in its 2nd week. I absolutely enjoy this song so “Peter Pan” could be at least her next Top 10 hit. I shouldn’t forget that two more songs also climbed up 15 spots this week. These songs are “Feels like coming home” (#52) by Jetta and “Million Euro smile” (#62) by The Makemakes.

The highest new entry is a little bit older. Originally this song has been released as a single back in 2010. “When we were young” (#55) by Lucy Schwartz is the international theme song of the TV series “Parenthood”. In Germany this series was first shown in October 2012 on VOX. Unfortunately the series was cancelled due to low ratings during the middle of the first season. Over the last weeks I watched the first two seasons on DVD and I started to like this theme song. So I decided to chart this song. “When we were young” is the first theme song from a TV series I’m charting since “The O.C.” title track “California” by Phantom Planet was a hit for me.

Other new entries are “Explosions in my heart” (#71) by Meltem Acikgöz who finished 2nd in this year’s season of DSDS, “The one” (#72) by Aneta Sablik who won this year’s season of DSDS, “Auf uns” (#73) by Andreas Bourani, “Neu anfangen” (#79, “New start”) by Revolverheld, “Sommer in Schweden” (#80, “Summer in Sweden) by Revolverheld, “In better hands” (#87) by Fefe Dobson, “Durch die Stadt” (#88, “Through the city”) by Metrickz, “Bright side of my heart (#89) by Sam Gray, “Empire” (#91) by Shakira, “Come alive” (#92) by Chromea feat. Toro Y Moi and “Lovers and liars” (#99) by Lauren Aquilina.

Week 169 – May 24^th, 2014

After last week’s comeback for the history books Tagträumer continued their success. For a 4th non-consecutive week they stayed at the top with “Sinn”. Climbing up one was Anouk with her former #1 “I won’t play that game” (#2). New within the top 3 is British singer Birdy. For a long time “Light me up” (#3) duelled with “Sleeping with a friend” (#5) by Neon Trees. Now it seems that Birdy has the better end. For Cuban singer Chila Lynn the dream of a #1 ended suddenly. “When love …” (#6) dropped down four spots from #2. Finally Taylor Swift reached Top 10 with “I almost do” (#9) which replaced Tone Damli’s “Heartkill” (#12).

Outside the Top 10 the big waiting has begun. Rita Ora’s “I will never let you down” (#13) also climbed up two spots like Ewelina Lisowska’s “W stronę słońca” (#11). Both songs are in a good position for entering next week’s Top 10. For both, Rita Ora and Ewelina Lisowska could it be their first Top 10 hit. Ace Wilder’s lazy song “Busy doin’ nothin’ “(#14) has fresh sound and I really like when she is singing the refrain with “Don't wanna work, work, work; I wanna make money while I sleep”. I think it’s nice making money while sleeping, but not practically feasible. Two songs entered the section between 11 and 20 for the for the first time. Foxes with “Let go for tonight” (#18) only has an outside chance for a Top 10 placement while Jillette Johnson’s latest album cut I’m charting has a very, very good outlook. “Peter Pan” (#19) climbed up four spots and could do the next step soon.

Andreas Bourani’s first hit on my chart has been “Alles nur in meinem Kopf” back in 2011. Three years later he reached his first #1 in Germany with his actual single “Auf uns” (#28). In Switzerland and Austria this song didn’t do as well as in Germany. On my chart “Auf uns” climbed up 45 spots to a new peak in its 2nd week. Therefore “Auf uns” is the greatest gainer of the week. Last week’s highest new entry “When we were young” (#55) by Lucy Schwartz only could hold the spot.

This week’s highest new entry comes from the USA. Back in the 1990’s a band of brothers stormed the charts with “MmmBop”. For the band Hanson this song had been their biggest hit up-to-date. Now a new band of brothers is set about doing the same thing. OBB how The Oswald Brothers Band is calling themselves released their first single “All eyes on you” (#58) in February. But now this pretty cool song is debuting on my chart and should do well outside too. Among the other new entries there are the last three album cuts from Matt Cardle’s 2nd album “The fire”. The title track “The fire” (#78) is the highest debut out of these three songs. The others are “All that matters” (#87) and “The first time I saw your face” (#88).

Nearly one year ago Finnish boy band Satin Circus debuted with their first single “Emma” straight in the Top 10. Later “Emma” topped the chart for four weeks. Their follow up “If you love me” topped the chart in December 2013 for one week. Now the third single “Expectations” (#93) is out. What should I say? I had really high expectations, but “Expectations” didn’t meet them. They almost didn’t reach the Top 100. This song isn’t what I’m looking from them so it seems clear that “Expectations” will maybe go out of the chart soon. Another band is also not meeting my expectations. Back in 2011 I bought the album “Belong” by The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Their first single “Simple and sure” (#98) of their new album “Days of abandon” also is way behind their early success.

Week 170 – May 31^st, 2014

And here they go again. Austrian band Tagträumer finished for a 5th week at the top of the chart with their catchy “Sinn”. New at the runner’s up position is British singer Birdy. With her first Top 10 hit “Light me up” (#2) she is trying to replace Tagträumer. Last week Anouk climbed back to #2 with “I won’t play that game” (#3). This week she goes back down one again while “You & I” (#4) is a non mover like “Sleeping with a friend” (#5) by Neon Trees. If you look over the Top 5 you’ll find out that these songs are rather long on the chart. Two songs reached the Top 10 for the first time. Simultaneously for the artists it’s their first Top 10 hit too. First to mention is Ewelina Lisowska. “W stronę słońca” (“Towards the sun”, #8) isn’t only for the first time in the Top 10. This song is the first song in Polish which reached this part. The other new artist in the Top 10 is Rita Ora. “I will never let you down” (#9) is very different to her previous work, but after several listens I really like this song.

After spending a half year in the Top 10 Emma’s “L’amore non mi basta” (#11) has to say goodbye. Every time is going to an end but this song will go on for a lot more weeks to come. A comeback in the Top 10 isn’t impossible. “L’amore non mi basta” is leading several songs in the part 11 – 20 of the chart which could do the next step if … . There are many reasons that these songs could be Top 10, but there are also many reason why they are not. Sure is only one thing that Jillette Johnson’s “Peter Pan” (#12) is reaching Top 10 by next week because of the fast rise over the last weeks. “Busy doin’ nothin’” (#13) by Ace Wilder and “Dancing in the dark” (#14) by TWB feat. Anouck are in a good position too, but like “Hurts” (#16) by Electric Lady Lab they are a little bit further away. German’s new superstar Andreas Bourani is continuing his uptrend with “Auf uns” (#20) which is his 2nd Top 20 hit after “Nur in meinem Kopf” back in 2011.

The highest new entry is by song which I nearly oversaw. “Problem” (#48) by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea is very interesting with its saxophone part and Big Sean’s uncredited part. “Problem” could reach Top 20 and then we will see how far this song will go. This new entry is followed by Goo Goo Dolls who placed another album cut on my chart. “Caught in the storm” (#49) is another beautiful song by them and is leading the two new songs by them on my chart. Their other new song is “Bringing on the light” (#56). Between these Goo Goo Dolls songs is the greatest gainer of the week. It’s “The fire” (#51) by Matt Cardle.

Other new entries are “So many ways to love” (#80) by Paul Damon feat. Isabel Soares, “Ghost” (#81) by Ella Henderson, “Vida” (#88) by Ricky Martin, “Carry you home” (#91) by Zara Larsson, “Rainmaker” (#93) by Emmelie de Forest, “Your lies” (#94) by Rebekka Thornbech, “How could you” (#95) by Viennie V and “Come home” (#98) by Tonight Alive.

Week 172 – June 14^th, 2014

Last week Birdy took over the chart with “Light me up” for the first time in her career. A week later she continued at the top. For the first time in weeks no song by Anouk can be found within the Top 3. So the way was free for a new song at the runner’s up position. This position goes to Emma with “La mia città” (#2). For next week a tough match up between Birdy and Emma can be expected. “La mia città” could be Emma’s 3rd #1 out of her “Schiena” album. The female podium is completed by Jillette Johnson. Since her debut with “Torpedo” she had nine hits on the chart. Six of these songs entered the Top 10 and “Peter Pan” (#3) could be her 3rd #1 out of her debut album “Water in a whale” following “Last bus out” (#55). As mentioned before Anouk’s two Top 10 hits dropped out of the Top 3. But “I won’t play that game (live)” (#4) and “You & I” (#5) are still among the Top 5 songs.

Austrian top act Tagträumer dropped last week from #1 to #5. This week “Sinn” (#6) dropped another spot in its 22nd week on the chart. In the other direction Rita Ora’s “I will never let you down” (#7) is moving. Climbing up two spots brings her a new personal peak with her 2nd charting song. Three weeks at the same position in the Top 10 is rather rare. Polish star Ewelina Lisowska managed to do this with her breakthrough hit “W stronę słońca” (#8). This song is followed by the only Top 10 debut. For The Writers Block (TBW) it’s their first Top 10 hit. As well as for French singer Anouck. Their dance song “Dancing in the dark” (#9) climbed up four spots for reaching the Top 10 for the first time. The Top 10 is completed by Neon Trees with “Sleeping with a friend” (#10).

In the next part of the chart the typical battle for spots in the Top 10 can be seen while Emma’s “L’amore non mi basta” (#12) only dropped one spots in its 31st week. Around this song there are songs which should be in the Top 10. Ace Wilder failed to do the last step with “Busy doin’ nothin’ (#11) by one step. And the Scandinavian sample of one of Roxette’s biggest hit “Listen to your heart” only climbed up two spots. So the beautiful “Hurt” (#13) by Electric Lady Lab failed to enter the Top 10. Behind these songs “Auf uns” (#15) by Andreas Bourani, “Cool kids” (#16) by Echosmith and “Rather be” (#17) by Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne are possible Top 10 hits too.

Not to forget about this weeks greatest gainer. With the saxophone two artists who had no big success on my chart before are sprinting up the chart. Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea are the artists behind “Problem” (#18) which climbed up 17 spots in the 3rd week on the chart. Then you have to go a little bit down the chart to find out about this weeks highest debut. This debut is by Ben Montague who placed another album cut on my chart. “False horizon” (#56) is another beautiful song from his album “Tales of flying and falling”. This song is followed by one more song from this album. “Already leaving” (#57) is Ben Montague’s 2nd debut this week.

Week 173 – June 21^st, 2014

It has already emerged last week that Birdy’s run at the top with “Light me up” (#3) will end this week. Too strong has been Emma with her 3rd chart topper from her album “Schiena”. “La mia città” isn’t only her 3rd #1 from “Schiena” it’s her 3rd #1 since November last year when “Dimentico tutto” conquered the top. But it may be doubted that “La mia città” will stay at the top for more than one week. Jillette Johnson is also doing well with another song from her debut album “Water in a whale”. “Peter Pan” (#2) is very catchy and could do what the most #1’s did this year. Stay awhile a top of the chart. Anouk although pregnant is very busy in these days. Her songs “I won’t play that game” (#4) and “You & I” (#5) are still among the top songs while her latest dance song is debuting this week. But more about her new song on a later part of this review.

“I will never let you down” (#6) by Rita Ora failed the reach the Top 5 by one spot. At the moment I’m not sure if she is doing this one last step because “I will never let you down” is in its 10th week. While the top songs are durable at the moment, so she can’t be written off. Rita Ora is followed by Electric Lady Lab. With their Roxette sample they reached the Top 10 for the first time with “Hurts” (#7). Also premiering is another Scandinavian act. Ace Wilder dominated Swedish charts right after her performance in the Melodifestivalen 2014. Right now she entered the Top 10 with her lazy song “Busy doin’ nothin’ ” (#10). “W stronę słońca” (#11) by Ewelina Lisowska and “Sleeping with a friend” (#15) by Neon Trees dropped and had to leave the Top 10.

Outside the Top 10 but in the immediate neighbourhood of the Top 10 still Emma’s long-lasting “L’amore non mi basta” (#12) can be found. If this song is staying within the Top 20 for two more weeks “L’amore non mi basta” is doing better than last year’s #2 song “Receive” by Alanis Morissette which only stayed 33 weeks within the Top 20. Another record by Emma’s song has long been broken. There is no other song that was placed worse than 14th place in 32 weeks. “L’amore non mi basta” is definitely a song for the record books. This song is followed by “Problem” (#13). This song by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea has definitely the momentum to reach the Top 10 next week. This is also the goal for Andreas Bourani. His biggest hit up-to-date “Auf uns” (#14) can’t be overseen in Austria, but is far away from the acceptance in Germany.

While “Peter Pan” is reaching for the stars another song by Jillette Johnson is also climbing up the chart. “Basset hound” (#26) a song about unrequited love is the greatest gainer of the week in its 7th week on the chart. This week’s highest new entry entered the Top 50 and comes from Emma. “Ma che vita fai” (#35, “What kind of live you’re living”) is an album cut from her outstanding album “Schiena” and of course Top 10 material. This song is among my favourite songs of this album and should reach Top 10 soon. “Ma che vita fai” is one of two debuts from her this week. The other debut is “1, 2, 3” (#51) which missed Top 50 by one spot.

Between the two debuts by Emma the debut by Anouk I’ve written before can be found. Her latest regular single “You & I” had been a dance song. For a Rock singer like her this wasn’t to expect. “You & I” was produced by well-known producer Afrojack from the Netherlands. This song opened her wider range of music. Now she is following this direction for her latest single. “Feet on the ground” (#41) is so far a good club track for which she teamed up with another producer from the Netherlands. Nicky Romery who is known for “I could be the one” with Avicii produced this song. “Feet on the ground” is a good song, but didn’t get me by the first listen like “You & I” or “I won’t play that game” which entered directly the Top 10 back in March. Although I like this song I can’t say how far this song will go in the next weeks.

Week 174 – June 28^th, 2014

The #1 changed-up as predicted. Jillette Johnson griped her 3rd #1 out of her sophomore debut album “Water in a whale” when “Peter Pan” (#1) followed “Last bus out” (#83) and last year’s biggest hit “Torpedo”. For Emma’s “La mia città” (#2) only the runner’s up position was left over after one week at the top. The podium is completed by Birdy’s first #1 “Light me up” (#3). Her follow-up single “Not about angels” flopped for me so far and can’t be found on this list. Tearing into the Top 5 is Danish band Electric Lady Lab. Their song “Hurts” (#4) climbed up three spots is now the only song in the Top 6 which didn’t reach #1 at the moment.

“Hurts” is followed by Anouk’s former #1’s “I won’t play that game (live)” (#5) and “You & I” (#6). That Saxophone parts are very popular not only German rapper Cro is showing with his actual top hit “Traum” (“Dream”). The biggest hit with a Saxophone part in this countdown is by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea. Their song “Problem” (#7) climbed up six spots and earns them their first Top 10 hit. Beside “Problem” there is another new song in the Top 10. It’s “Auf uns” (#9, “To us”) by German Andreas Bourani who also reached Top 10 for the first time in Austria this week. Between these new songs Rita Ora’s “I will never let you down” (#8) is placed. Austrian band Tagträumer is closing this week’s Top 10 with “Sinn” (#10). This could be their last week in the Top 10 with this song. But do not worry about them. Too late for this week’s edition they released their 3rd single which will be found on the next edition.

The songs on positions 11 to 20 are rather long on my chart. So there is only one song in this part of the chart that I will predict a chance for reaching Top 10 by next week. It’s “All eyes on you” (#15) by OBB. The Oswald Brothers Band is formed be the brothers Zach, Jacob and Nich. “All eyes on you” has a very infectious sound and a catchy refrain. These ingredients should bring this song to higher parts of the chart where this song could be the first Christian pop song reaching this part of the chart.

After several weeks of low new entries this week the highest new entry can be found within the Top 30. Marlene had two chart hits so far with “Stay awake” had it’s last charting week two week ago. This week she outperformed all of her charting hits with the debut week of the title track of her EP “Indian summer”. “Indian summer” (#24) has everything to become a big hit like an upbeat sentiment, a catchy chorus, a plinky-plonky piano production, and an infectiously joyous disposition how Scandipop described. Marlene’s “Indian summer” isn’t the only Top 30 debut. This week TWB feat. Anouck dropped out of the Top 10 with “Dancing in the dark” (#11). But the world didn’t end for them. They placed their follow-up “Hold back” (#27) straight into the Top 30. “Hold back” is another great house tune which is starting where “Dancing in the dark” ends. Anouck’s voice is lifting the beats of these song to other levels.

The greatest gainer of the week comes by British singer Nick Howard who won the 2nd season of The Voice of Germany. “Can’t break a broken heart” (#43) climbed up 45 spots. It is the 3rd single out of his album “Living in stereo” and the first I’m charting while “Untouchable” and his duet with Lenka “Stuck like glue” failed to impress me. The song itself is very catchy and the whistling part really helps. Unfortunately there is no official video on youtube or elsewhere so you only can watch live versions in very poor quality of this beautiful song. When writing about this week’s greatest gainer I’ve to point out that there is another song in this week’s edition which climbed more than 40 spots. In most of the week’s this song would have been awarded, but this week Nick Howard’s song did a little bit better. The song which climbed up 41 spots is “Ghost” (#25) by Ella Henderson who recently debuted at #1 in UK.

Three songs missed the Top 50 by a few spots. The beginning makes Jessie J with “Sexy lady” (#53). Although never released as an official single this song peaked at #22 in September 2013 in UK. Now I decided to chart this song before I’m waiting longer that this song will be released officially as a single. Jessie J is followed by US band Maroon 5. “Maps” (#54) is a little bit different to their previous work, but no less catchy and interesting. “Maps” should reach Top 20 soon. And then there is one more album cut by Pink. “The great escape” (#55) is the highest of her three debuts this week.

Other debuts are “Is this thing on” (#74) by Pink, “Run” (#75) by Pink, “Non mi ami” (#79, “You don’t love me”) by Giorgia, “Beautiful world” (#87) by Jasmine Kara, “All the others” (#88) by The Coronas and “Real woman” (#89) by Chila Lynn.

Week 175 – July 05^th, 2014

At the top of the chart there hasn’t been a change this week. So Jillette Johnson earns her 2nd week at the top with the brilliant “Peter Pan”. She is followed by Danish act Electric Lady Lab. Their sample of Roxette’s mega hit ejtected “Hurts” into the runner up position. Two weeks ago “La mia città” (#3) by Emma topped the chart. Since that this song is slipping down the chart, but still is in the Top 3. Another chart topper which is going down is “Light me up” (#4) by Birdy. She could hold off attacks by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea. Their song “Problem” (#5) climbed up two spots and brings the first song with a saxophone part into the Top 5.

The Top 5 is followed by this week’s highest new entry. Austrian newcomer band released their 3rd single “Mein Herz (für immmer)” (#6, “My heart (forever)”). This song easily shot into the Top 10 and landed at #6. The song itself is well written and continues there where the bands #1 hit “Sinn” ended. While “Sinn” is about not writing a love song to get a girl back who doesn’t care about such things, “Mein Herz (für immer)” is quite the opposite. Here they sing about writing a love song for a girl who the protagonist is fallen in love to show how much the person is in love. The song shows lightness like their first single which I missed a little bit in “Schwerelos” (#77). And then there is the absolute catchy refrain I really appreciate. I’ve looked a little bit into the history books. “Mein Herz (für immer)” is the 3rd Top 10 entry this year and the first time for an Austrian act since last year in June Rising Girl feat. DJ Lil Dirty debuted also at #6 with “I know you’ll wait for me” which later topped the chart for three weeks. The more interesting fact is that Tagträumer are the first Austrian act who are reaching the Top 10 for a 2nd time in now 175 weeks since re-starting the chart. So I can say that they are the most successful Austrian act so far.

Tagträumer’s new single is the only new song in the Top 10. This new entry is followed by Anouk’s former #1’s “I won’t play that game (live)” (#7) and “You and I” (#8). Rita Ora’s 1st single “I will never let you down” (#9) from her upcoming new album with the working title “O” dropped one spot like Andreas Bourani’s “Auf uns” (#10). Almost in the Top 10 landed OBB’s “All eyes on you” (#11). It has been really tough and if there hasn’t been a new entry in the Top 10 they could have reached this part this week. On their way up into the Top 10 are also Emma with “Ma che vita fai” (#16) and Marlene’s “Indian summer” (#17).

At #29 Cro’s latest coup “Traum” (“Dream”) gave its debut. Sure this song has been released a couple of weeks ago and topped the charts in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. But I hesitated a little bit to chart it. Not because I didn’t like this song, but I think the prices for singles are a too high. In in the end I finally bought my copy and “Traum” is now the 2nd best new entry this week. And there is one more debut within the Top 50. Her you can find the first single “The seeds you sow” (#50) out of the debut EP “The seeds you sow” by Scottish Alternative band Prides. I really like their songs so I decided not only to chart their debut single. “The seeds you sow” is followed by the bands 2nd single “Messiah” (#52) and their 3rd song on their EP “Cool blooded” (#53).

Directly behind the three new entries by the Prides the duet between Ginny Blackmore & Stan Walker “Holding you” (#53) gave its debut. And all four new entries are led by this week’s greatest gainer which is “C’est la vie” (#49) by Inna Modja. Other new entries are “Lightning” (#67) by Cash Cash feat. John Rzeznik, “Ghost” (#79) by Natives, “Run” (#82) by Chasing Grace, “Free” (#83) also by Chasing Grace, “Take a ride (put’em in the air)” (#84) by Eric Saade, “Lauter leben” (#92, “Live louder”) by Alexander Knappe, “Heaven in our headlights” (#98) by Hedley, “Higher” (#99) by The Ready Set and “Mr. President” (#100) by Pia Mia.

Week 176 – July 12^th, 2014

”Peter Pan” is still the only one left in Neverland. Jillette Johnson is holding off the rest from the top for a third week, while Electric Lady Lab’s “Hurts” (#2) is shining bright form the runners-up position. Latest pop sensation Ariana Grande climbed up the chart with Iggy Azalea and their “Problem” (#3). The podium is followed by Austrian band Tagträumer. Last week they debuted at #6 this week “Mein Herz (für immer)” (#4) got two spots up and left all of the former #1’s behind. The Top 5 is closed by Emma’s Eurovision Song Contest song “La mia città” (#5).

Also going down is Anouk. While her latest dance single “Feet on the ground” (#33) has it a little bit hard, her #1’s “I won’t plat that game (live)” (#7) and “You & I” (#10) didn’t as well as in the last weeks. For “You & I” it could be the last week within the Top 10. The only new song within this part of the chart is “All eyes on you”. For OBB it isn’t only the bands 1st Top 10 hit, it’s the first Christian song in the Top 10 hit too. OBB replaced Rita Ora’s “I won’t let you down” (#13) which go down four spots.

The last two weeks hasn’t seen a lot of songs which where ready for Top 10. This week is different. Already at #11 there is a song with #1 potential. It’s Emma’s “Ma che vita fai” which went up five spots in its 4th week. For Marlene “Indian summer” (#12) which also climbed up five spots could be her 1st Top 10 hit. Then there is this week’s greatest gainer. It comes by a newcomer band from the UK. Chasing Grace, not to be confused with the Christian band from Fulks Run in Virginia of the same name, did best this week. Their 2nd official single “Run” (#14) sprinted up the chart after last weeks debut at #82. Their debut single “Free” (#72) which I’m also charting struggled and climbed only 11 spots.

The highest new entry comes by Cris Cab. His chart debut “Liar liar” spent 13 weeks on the chart and peaked at #27. The follow-up did better and outperformed “Liar liar” in its 1st week on chart. “Loves me not” (#16) directly debuted within the Top 20 and so Cris Cab is ready for his 1st Top 10 hit. I really like the songs catchiness. “Loves me not” reminds me on the Daisy oracle by the individual petals of a flower connected with alternating rhymes ( … loves me, … loves me not) which Cris Cab is singing about which is not a bad thing.

Other debuts are “Starlight” (#47) by Taylor Swift, “Sad beautiful tragic” (#58) by Taylor Swift, “The lucky one” (#59) by Taylor Swift which are the last songs from her “Red” album, “God only knows” (#93) by MKTO, “This could be something” (#95) by Anton Ewald feat. Medina, “Clockwork” (#98) by Jill Johnson, “The banjo” (#99) by 3LOGY and “Electric City” (#100) by Sandra Lyng.

Week 177 – July 19^th, 2014

With her 3rd #1 “Peter Pan” (#2) on my chart Jillette Johnson dropped this week one spot. She had to clear the way for Ariana Grande & Iggy Azalea. For both “Problem” (#1) is their first #1. I didn’t see it coming when I first listened to this song. The saxophone part helped and leads “Problem” to #1. How long depends on how fast Tagträumer’s 3rd single “Mein Herz (für immer)” (#3) will rise. This week they climbed up one spot. If this continues they will take over in two weeks. Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea’s takeover of the top position ended all speculation of a takeover by Danish Electric Lady Lab. “Hurts” (#4) dropped two spots in its 12th week on chart. The Top 5 is completed by Emma’s “La mia città” (#5).

Between 6 and 10 two new songs can be found. The first one is by Emma. A nickel for everyone who would have guessed it. “Ma che vita fai” (#6) climbed up five spots and proceed to pass “La mia città” by next week. Emma is followed by Swedish Marlene. Her summer anthem “Indian summer” (#7) also climbed up five spots. The video to this song has been released two days ago. With her 3rd charting song she finally reached Top 10 status. The Top 10 itself is closed with three former #1’s “Light me up” (#8) by Birdy, Anouk’s “I won’t play that game” (#9) and her “You & I” (#10). For all these three songs this could be the last week in the Top 10. The first song which has been replaced in the Top 10 is “Auf uns” (#13) by Andreas Bourani. This song is now the unofficial hymn for the German football team after their win in the Fifa World Cup in Brazil. The other one is “All eyes on you” (#14) by OBB which only spent one week in the Top 10.

Last week Chasing Grace sprinted up the chart with “Run” (#11). This week they went at it slowly. “Run” only climbed up three spots and so they missed the bands first Top 10 hit by one spot. But repealed is not postponed. German rapper Cro continued his success with his 2nd album “Melodie”. The first single out of this album “Traum” (#12) is doing well in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. On my chart “Traum” climbed up six spots. As this week’s #1 “Traum” has a saxophone part which could bring Cro his 1st Top 10 hit on my chart. These two songs are in a good position to enter the Top 10 by next week. Cris Cab’s “Loves me not” (#15) has been last week’s highest new entry. This week it only went up one spot so I’m not sure if “Loves me not” reaches Top 10 by next week. In a better position for a Top 10 spot is Nick Howard. His catchy “Can’t break a broken heart” (#16) climbed up six spots. And for all who don’t know this song they should listen to the recently to Youtube uploaded unplugged version of this song.

This week’s highest debut barley missed the Top 20. The song is by Amelia Lily. Do you remember her? Back in 2012 her debut single “You bring me joy” peaked at #22 and her follow-up “Shut up (and give me whatever you got)” reached #35 in November 2012. Her 3rd single flopped and her planned debut album was never released. Now she is back with new material. “California” went straight in at #23 and should outperform “You bring me joy” by next week. With its catchy refrain “California” could lead Amelia Lily into the Top 10. For the 2nd best new entry you have to go down the chart a little bit. It is “Without you” (#54) by the New York based electronic pop band Ghost Beach. “Without you” is the bands 1st promotional single after four regular singles out of their debut album “Blonde” (will be released in August) which have been released a year ago. With two more promotional singles (“Moon over Japan” and “Close enough”) they have released seven songs from their debut album so far. This week’s greatest gainer of the week is “Ghost” (#61) by Natives.

Week 178 – July 26^th, 2014

The half of summer is nearly gone, but the fresh summer sound is lightning up my chart. Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea are shining bright from the top for a 2nd week with “Problem” (#1). “Peter Pan” (#2) by Jillette Johnson is still in the runners up position and Austrian band Tagträumer is completing the Top 3 with “Mein Herz (für immer)” (#3). The top three songs are the same like last week, but the Top 5 sees two new songs. For Emma it’s nothing new that a song of her ends in this part of the chart. “Ma che vita fai” (#4) climbed up two spots and continues its way to #1. In the shadow of Emma Marlene is also climbing up two spots with “Indian summer” (#5).

While “Hurts” (#6) by Electric Lady Lab dropped two spots former #1 “La mia città” (#9) dropped four spots. For this song by Emma it could be the last week in the Top 10. Three songs, “Light me up” (#13) by Birdy, “I won’t play that game (live)” (#11) by Anouk and “You & I” (#12) also by Anouk, had been replaced in the Top 10 this week. For three artists the dream of a Top 10 placement has come true. Since his debut with “Easy” (I haven’t charted this song) it has been a long way for Cro reaching Top 10. “Traum” (#7) is the 1st single out of his 2nd album and his 1st Top 10 hit on my chart. Nick Howard also had a long way to go. After winning the 2nd season of “The Voice of Germany” he disappeared into oblivion. One and half year later he is still ignored by the most radio stations in Germany. Against all odds his beautiful gem “Can’t break a broken heart” (#8) found its way into my Top 10 after climbing up eight spots in the last week. Then there is the British Indie pop band Chasing Grace. “Run” (#10) reached the Top 10 spot in the very last second after a tough decision against Anouk.

Last week Amelia Lily had the highest debut with “California” (#23). Yesterday the official video to this song was released, but it doesn’t helped her. “California” struggled and stayed for a 2nd week at #23. This week the top debuts can be found within the Top 20 which is a reason why Amelia Lily didn’t reached this part. Let’s start with the highest of the three Top 20 debuts. Over the last years Jukebox The Ghost had four chart hits starting with “Empire” (peaked at #60) back in 2011. There biggest hit had been “Somebody” in 2012 when this song reached #10 for a single week. Two years later Jukebox The Ghost debuts their ballad “The great unknown” (#14) a few spots behind the Top 10 where this song will end. “The great unknown” is the 1st single from the 4th album of the same name and it could be the bands biggest hit. Not even on my chart. This song has everything we all like about those songs by those bands which accompanied us with good music over the years. I press my thumbs that this song will bring them major attention.

Very different from "The great unknown" is “Kisses for breakfast” (#17). I’m sure that not only I haven’t heard of Melissa Steel before. She is a young singer from Bradford, England, with Caribbean roots. And this song has the Caribbean summer feeling. I’ve charted some Reggae songs before with “Explode” by Cover Drive feat. Dappy as the biggest chart hit reaching #1. “Kisses for breakfast” is very catchy and definitely a future Top 10 hit. I really like this sing along song. The third debut within the Top 10 is by Ariana Grande feat. Zedd. “Break free” (#19) is the 2nd single out of her upcoming 2nd album “My everything” and could be her next big hit on my chart. When I first listened to the opening of this song I thought that this isn’t the real song, because there are a lot of videos on Youtube with similar sound, making fun on the listeners. So it definitely took some time before I gave the whole song a chance offside this intro. And it was worth it. The greatest gainer of the week are “Lightning” (#36) by Cash Cash feat. John Rezeznik and “Free” (#46) by Chasing Grace.

Week 179 – August 2^nd, 2014

The Top 5 sees only one drop with two songs going up instead of this song. While Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea are holding the top spot with “Problem” former #1 “Peter Pan” (#4) by Jillette Johnson dropped two spots. Therefor the Austrian top act in these days Tagträumer climbed up one with “Mein Herz (für immer)”. This beautiful and catchy song could be the bands 2nd #1 on my chart. Not even they hold the record for the most Top 10 hits by an Austrian band if they go up to #1 they are the first band/act from Austria who could get a 2nd #1. The podium completing is Emma with “Ma che vita fai” (#3). She is also bringing “Problem” in troubles, but for all it can be only one #1. The Top 5 is closed by “Indian summer” (#5) like last week.

At #6 the only new song within the Top 10 can be found. It’s “The great unknown” by Jukebox The Ghost. With a huge climb of eight spots in its 2nd week their 1st single of the upcoming album is outperforming every other song I’ve charted by them over the last years. Three out four of the other songs in this part hold the position. So “Traum” (#7) by Cro, “Can’t break a broken heart” (#8) by Nick Howard and “Run” (#10) by Chasing Grace finished like the did last week while Electric Lady Lab’s Top 10 run is going to an end because “Hurts” (#9) dropped three spots.

Last week you found out that there had been three debuts between the spots 11 and 20. One of these songs, “The great unknown”, entered the Top 10 this week. The other two debuts struggled a little bit. Above all Melissa Steel’s reggae pop song “Kisses for breakfast” (#17) couldn’t meet the expectations of last weeks debut. “Kisses for breakfast” hold the spot and saw a little climb by Ariana Grande feat. Zedd with “Break free” (#16). Better did the former Top 20 debut “Loves me not” (#12) by Chris Cab. Maybe next week he could celebrate his fist Top 10 hit. Or is Maroon 5 grabbing the spot from Electric Lady Lab? Their latest hit “Maps” (#14) climbed up four spots.

The greatest gainer of the week only climbed 13 spots this week. It’s “Starlight” (#24) by Taylor Swift who had a good 2013 on my chart with several Top 10 hits. In 2014 so far she hadn’t entered this part, but “Starlight” could change this. To find the highest debut of the week you’ve to go down the chart. It’s “Boom clap” (#55) by Charli XCX. It’s a wonderful song for the film “The fault in our stars” which I haven’t seen. Two spots behind the debut single by Lemo “Vielleicht der Sommer” (#57, “Maybe the summer”) gives its debut. It’s a nice song which received some airplay in Austria. Then there is Magic!. Their debut single “Rude” (#58) finally managed to entered Europe and so it found its way on my chart too. It’s a moderate debut, but “Rude” could do better if you compare it with “Kisses for breakfast” another reggae song.

Other debuts are “Lass uns gehen” (#72, “Let us go”) the new single by Revolverheld, “Wir schmeißen unsere Herzen ins Feuer” (#73, “We throw our hearts into the fire”) another album track by Revolverheld, “Somebody to you” (#78) by The Vamps feat. Demi Lovato, “Over my head” (#79) by Elen Levon, “Punks don’t dance” (#80) by Crystalyne, “Wicked wonderland” (#86) by Martin Tungevaag, “Rockin’ “ by Virginia Ernst and “Let me sleep” (#100) by former German X-Factor winner David Pfeffer & Band.

Week 180 – August 9^th, 2014

They did it! Tagträumer scored their 2nd #1 with “Mein Herz (für immer)” after “Sinn” (#43) topped the chart for five weeks this year. They are the first Austrian act who could top the chart with two different songs. In Autumn they plan to release their debut album which I hope is as good as their singles. For last week’s #1 “Problem” (#3) by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea only the last spot at the podium was free this week, because Emma got the runners-up position with “Ma che vita fai” (#2). And from behind another song is pushing forward straight right to #1. It’s Jukebox The Ghost with their incredible “The great unknown” (#4).

Some weeks ago Tagträumer entered directly the Top 10 with their now #1 song “Mein Herz (für immer)”. This week another German song entered Top 10. “Insel” (“Island”, #5) is the first single from Juli’s new album which is also called “Insel”. Ten years ago they had their first hit with “Perfekte Welle” (“Perfect wave”). Since that I’m a big fan of their music. Their last album wasn’t as good as their first two albums. I really hope that they can turn the corner with their 4th album, because my other favourite German bands 4th albums were disappointing. Wir Sind Helden disbanded after this 4th album before they proofed that they could do it better and Silbermond’s 4th album went more in the Coldplay direction which I absolutely don’t like although “Himmel auf” hit #1 back in 2012 when it was released. “Insel” is the perfect song to break this trend. It has the easy listening and the summer sound which should bring them their first #1 on my chart and brings me in the right mood for their new album.

While “Insel” entered the Top 5 Marlene had to drop one with her summer song “Indian summer” (#6). “Peter Pan’s” (#7) catchiness couldn’t prevent Jillette Johnson’s drop and Cro had also to drop one with “Traum” (#9). “Can’t break a broken heart” (#8) by Nick Howard and “Run” (#10) by Chasing Grace hold their spots. “Insel” replaced “Hurts” (#14) by Electric Lady Lab who had to leave the Top 10 after an amazing run. Between 11 and 20 several songs are urged for a Top 10 spot, which is very hard to reach in the next weeks, because the most songs in the Top 10 are at the beginning of their chart run. From “Loves me not” (#11) by Chris Cab over “Maps” (#12) by Maroon 5 to “Break free” (#15) by Ariana Grande feat. Zedd and “Kisses for breakfast” (#17) by Melissa Steel feat. Popcaan or Taylor Swift’s “Starlight” (#18) there is a wide range of music which should be Top 10 in my opinion. But as we all now within in a Top 10 there are only 10 spots and so not every song could reach such a spot although they would deserve it. The greatest gainer of the week comes from the Canadian band Crystalyne. Their song “Punk’s don’t dance” (#46) climbed up 34 spots.

The 2nd best new entry comes from South Korea. “Red” is a the new solo single by Hyuna who is the leading singer from South Korean girl band 4minute. The sound of this song changes several times which makes this song very attractive to listen for me. I really like the rap part in this song. This part brings the song to another level like the change of music at round the 2:20 mark. This sound reminds me on Katy Perry’s “Dark horse”, but instead of “Red” I don’t like the whole Katy Perry song. The video itself is like a copy of modern western music video which is not bad, but not good either because there had been better music video from South Korea before. The sound and the Korean are more memorable than the lyrics would have deserved if you translate the song in English (or German) which makes the song more childish. In the end everything that counts is that I like the song beside good lyrics or not.

Week 181 – August 16^th, 2014

Week No. 181 is quite a calm week. There is hardly any movement in Top 20 and the highest new entry outside the Top 60. But let’s start with the #1. Against this week’s trend there is a new #1. Austrian Tagträumer had to leave the top spot after only one week with “Mein Herz (für immer)” (#2). So Emma could take over. “Ma che vita fai” (#1) is her 3rd #1 this year following “La mia cittá” (#19) and “L’amore non mi basta” (#46). But it pertains the same like last week for Tagträumer. There is a lot of concurrence out there. Jukebox The Ghost reached a podium spot for the first time with “The great unknown” (#3) and German band Juli climbed up one spot after last week’s Top 10 debut with “Insel” (#4). For former #1 “Problem” (#5) by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea only the last spot in the Top 5 was over. The rest of the Top 5 was stable and didn’t change the spots.

From 6 to 13 everything there is no difference to last week. And beside the little climb by Ariana Grande feat. Zedd with “Break free” (#14), Taylor Swift with “Starlight” (#16) and Avril Lavigne with “Give you what you like” (#18) in the section from 11 to 20 there isn’t much action. The Script defied the trend and climbed up 21 spots with their latest smash “Superheroes” (#60). So they are the greatest gainer of the week. Right beside this song the highest new entry can be found. This song is a little bit older. But Austrians former Eurovision Song Contest participate Nadine Beiler was boycotted by Austrians biggest radio station last year. So I found out about her last single very late. Therefore “Right on” (#61) is giving its debut this week.

Directly behind is the 2nd best new entry. It’s from South Korea. Wonder Girls singer Yeeun released under the name Ha:tfelt her solo debut “Ain’t nobody” (#62). This solo debut nurture the rumours about a disbanding of the Wonder Girls. For the song she released a very nice video which works very good in combination with this song. Other debuts are “Around the world” (#74) by Christina Aguilera, “Circles” (#75) by Christina Aguilera, “The promise” (#80) by Emma Blackery, “Bang bang” (#82) by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj, “Heart made me up on you” (#92) by R5, “Wildfire” (#94) by Borgeous and “Kept me under” (#97) by Fabrizio Levita.
