#20Counting Crows f/Vanessa Carlton - Big Yellow TaxiI'd already been familiar with Joni Mitchell's original from 1970, so when it came time for the Counting Crows to remake it, I was interested. For the single version, they enlisted the help of Vanessa Carlton for background vocals... and they sound incredible together! This was one of the freshest-sounding remakes of 2003, but there's still one more remake to come! Weeks on: 25 Peak position: #3 #19Michelle Branch - BreatheWhen I first got her most recent CD "Hotel Paper", this was one of the standout tracks. So naturally, when this song was released, I ended up liking it more. It's one of her catchiest and most uplifting songs to date, one that just can never wear out on me and probably is one of her most universally appealing. It spent 5 weeks at #1 on my chart throughout November and December, becoming her 5th straight #1, and was the only song to have a non-consecutive run at #1. Weeks on: 20 (so far) Peak position: #1 for 5 weeks

#18T.A.T.U. - All The Things She SaidThis controversial Russian duo put out an infectuous debut single that perhaps hints at lesbian actions. It really caught on with me after a while, and stuck in my head, hitting #1 in their 23rd week on my chart. Even if you're not into lesbians, this is the type of song that you'll be singing along to at some point because it's just that catchy, and sounded unique and original in amongst what I'd normally hear on the radio. Weeks on: 35 Peak position: #1 (3 weeks) #17Train - Calling All AngelsThey had a huge success with "Drops of Jupiter", and this latest effort from Train has duplicated the former song's success. It carries their trademark sound and uplifting lyrics, and proved to be a huge hit, showing that using the same hit formula will generate another hit. Their newest single "When I Look To The Sky" came just short of the top 100 this year, but may be showing up in my top 100 of 2004. Weeks on: 25 Peak position: #2

#16Matchbox Twenty - Bright LightsThis song starts off with Rob Thomas singing over just a piano, and eventually builds up near the end. The story in this song was told very well, lines like "Turn yourself around and come on home" make the song stand out as my favourite among the tracks on their most recent CD, More Than You Think You Are. It ended up being one of my favourite Matchbox Twenty singles yet, peaking at #2 on my chart back in September. Weeks on: 30 Peak position: #2 #15Santana f/Chad Kroeger - Why Don't You & ILate last year, selected stations across Canada played this yet-to-be-released song from Santana's latest CD, where he teamed up with Nickelback's Chad Kroeger. I really liked the combination, and it spent a week at #1 back in February. However, when it came time to release it everywhere else, Chad was replaced with Alex Band from The Calling so as not to interfere with Nickelback's song out at the same time. I didn't like this new version quite as much as I'd already been adjusted to Chad's version, but with Alex on vocals it became the hit it deserved to be all along. Weeks on: 35 Peak position: #1 (1 week)

#14Stacie Orrico - StuckAfter getting started in the Christian music scene, Stacie Orrico ventured into the world of pop music... and she's never sounded better. "Stuck" is an example of what a great pop song should be; great melody, catchy tune, and cute lyrics. I hate you, but I love you, I can't stop thinking of you... it's true, I'm stuck on you! One of 2003's most talented breakthrough artists, hopefully Stacie sticks around for a long time to come! Weeks on: 28 Peak position: #4 #13Beyoncé f/Jay-Z - Crazy In LoveThe irresistible combination in this song of the horns in the background, Beyoncé's "uh oh"'s, and everything else really makes for an infectuous song that just made me wanna get up and dance! This proves that even as a solo artist, Beyoncé can still put out great music like she did with Destiny's Child, and Jay-Z returns the favour that she gave him on my #59 song, "'03 Bonnie & Clyde", by providing a rap in the middle of the song. While kinda repetitive in spots, this song is still great, and spent a week at #1 on my chart back in August. Weeks on: 27 Peak position: #1 (1 week)

#12Coldplay - ClocksThe haunting piano at the beginning draws you in to this, one of their finest works to date. Chris Martin's vocals fit in well with the spiritual mood of one of the most impressive instrumental performances of the past few years, and they all come together in my favourite Coldplay single to date, which spent 4 weeks at #2 on my chart. It had that unique sound that no other song on this chart has, which made it stand out for me. Weeks on: 30 Peak position: #2 #11Nickelback - SomedayThis song instantly caught on with me, as it follows the same formula as their previous hit "How You Remind Me" with a similar sound, well-written lyrics, and a killer guitar solo. The emotion conveyed by Chad Kroeger's voice really shows, and the video was quite impressive as well, with a great story behind it. As a result, it managed to debut at #4 in my first week of hearing the song, spent 3 weeks at #1, and is still on my chart today. Weeks on: 20 Peak position: #1 (3 weeks)

#10Uncle Kracker - Drift AwayThe original version of this song was recorded by Dobie Gray in 1973. It's one of those songs that I always knew the tune, but couldn't recall who sang it. So when Uncle Kracker remade this familiar tune, I was interested, and he made it sound even better; he even brought the original vocalist along to sing it with him! The song definitely fit his style, and he did a great job remaking it within the style of the original version. I didn't think Uncle Kracker could ever top "Follow Me", but he has, and ends up with the highest remake on my top 100 of 2003. Weeks on: 31 Peak position: #4

#9Christina Aguilera - FighterOne of the standout tracks on her "Stripped" CD, it shows how bad experiences in the past can only make one more determined to fight. This is one of her most powerful singles to date, bringing a rock edge to her sound, and showing her true emotion in her voice and the lyrics. It ended up peaking at #1 on my chart back in June, and her highest appearance on my top 100 of the year here at #9, and will be remembered by me as one of her best and most inspirational singles to date. Her latest single, "The Voice Within", should be showing up in my top 100 of 2004. Weeks on: 27 Peak position: #1 (1 week)
