Police are looking for at least six Vestavia Hills High School students who sneaked into the school and spread elephant manure all around the auditorium as part of a graduation prank, Chief Butch Wilson said.
The May 17 act cost the school $1,600 in cleanup fees and forced Principal Ann Jones to move an awards ceremony from the auditorium to the school gymnasium.
"There was elephant manure on the walls, on the curtains, they had just slung it all over. It was on the cloth seats and on the stage," Jones said.
School maintenance workers told Jones the mess was caused by elephant waste that can be picked up from the Birmingham Zoo under a special agreement normally reserved for landscape companies and licensed contractors. Hallway surveillance videotaped six masked students entering the school about 2:30 a.m. May 17 carrying plastic sacks.
Wilson said there were no suspects in the case Tuesday. His office did not immediately return a call Wednesday.
Officer Mike O'Connor was expected to interview students starting this week. The principal had given the pranksters four days to come forward before turning it over to police.
