This CD *might* be the first album since I started "keeping track" back in October to go Max Platinum in its first week of release. That means over 100 plays logged among all the tracks on the album by the end of the first week. Mind you, 'The Music' gave the CD a headstart with like 30 plays before this week but pretty much every CD I get has a headstart to some degree. Fall Out Boy, for example, were able to go Gold with more than half of those spins coming from pre-album-release play from 'This Ain't A Scene'.
Anyway, for some reason I'm loving this CD. It's not spectacular. There's not a song on here that I would consider amazing but the CD is really clicking with me as a whole. I think this disc might do for me what 'So Called Chaos' did for Alanis in my eyes in 2004 and that is put David back into my list of core artists. I can totally see this album being my summer laid-back album of the year.
I just can't explain it but I know I love this! I might even consider it my favourite David album when all is said and done! It's like he just let loose and said "I don't care if I make a pop album. I won't restrain myself to make an acoustic based or rock based or anything else" album. He just made some songs and that was it. It's great!
Bill? Thoughts?

All I can say is...."The Music" has strangely grown on me, despite its being AC-leaning. I doubt I'd like the rest of the album, however.

Strange Birds is my favourite David Usher CD since Morning Orbit. I agree with Mike that it's not an amazing record, but it's very consistent, probably David's most pop-oriented effort - and that might be a stretch considering I don't think that others would agree with me, they might find it more AAA-leaning. Anyway, "The Music" is still the most outstanding, hit-worthy track, with "Spotlight On" and "Brilliant" right behind. These songs all play on David's ability to create songs with equal amounts of quiet and anthem in them. The most unusual track is "Ugly Is Beautiful", a very heavily early 80's/new wave-influenced track that wouldn't sound out of place on the dance floor (but remixed). I would say my other favourites are "Science", "Happy Endings", and "Blue". Thematically, there's nothing new about the songs, but David's melodies make them rise above the norm. Well worth checking out.

Indeed! I think the only thing holding this album back as being my favourite David CD is if it doesn't stand the test of time. So I won't know for sure for a few years at least.
