Source: BBC News Arctic Monkeys eye record debut The Arctic Monkeys' album could become the fastest-selling debut album in recorded chart history, after selling more than 100,000 on its first day. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not sold 118,501 copies, outselling the rest of the top 20 albums combined. It is expected to sell over 350,000 copies by the end of the week, breaking Hear'Say's five-year-old record. "We knew day one sales were going to be big, but nobody expected them to be this huge," said HMV's Phil Penman. The retail chain's head of music added: "It's as if they had won the X Factor, but achieving the same kind of sales without the benefit of a massive TV audience." "They're well on their way to having the first million-selling album of 2006" Phil Penman HMV head of music The Sheffield band built up a substantial fan base via the internet, before they were signed to Domino Records in June 2005. Their debut single "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" topped the charts last October. Follow-up "When The Sun Goes Down" gave the band a second number one last Sunday, and current sales figures put them in line to simultaneously top the album and singles charts this weekend. The album has already sold more in one day than the debut efforts from Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand sold in their first week. "If it continues to sell at this rate, there's even a danger shops could sell out by the end of the week." Hear'Say's Popstars holds the current record for a debut album, selling 306,631 copies in its first week in 2001. Earlier on Tuesday, the band picked up four nominations at next month's NME Awards, including best British band, new band, live band and best track.

This is UNBELIEVABLE for a band who did it all themselves, without a label. Shows the power of internet promotion.
Great for them. They are brilliant.

Yeah and they're all just 19 or 20 years old too, an amazing success ! They're doing a North American tour in March- opening for Oasis at the 15000 capacity Air Canada Centre in Toronto. What a night that's gonna be! ;D My favourite from the album is "Fake Tales Of San Francisco" at the moment. Oh, and on Radio 1 the other day they did a cover of Girls Aloud "Love Machine"... love it! ;D www.myspace.com/arcticmonkeys

I highly doubt they'll ever have a hit in America, though.

I highly doubt they'll ever have a hit in America, though. Ohh I'd place a fair amount of money that they will. - "I Bet" will be a nice breath of fresh air for Alternative. They have an opening slot on Oasis tour in Canada, an 18,000 seater show which sold out in one day (that's going to be huge for them) Plus their own small club show the next day. They're well on their way.

If you ask me, there's only one qualification for determining a hit: if it appears on the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, it's a hit. If it doesn't appear on the top 40, then it's not a hit. And I don't think the Arctic Monkeys will do so. But, as always, I could be wrong.

They favor rhythmic formats more, since audience impressions are greater in Rhy formats because theyre more so in urban areas. I think many would disagree about your qualifications of a hit.

And I don't think the Arctic Monkeys will do so. But, as always, I could be wrong. There are more ways to calculate a hit other than the pop top forty charts. For example, I believe Pink Floyd have had only two songs make the top forty singles chart in their entire career. Yet, they have sold 175 to 200 million albums in their career. To say an act like Pink Floyd has not been a hit simply because they have not had many pop singles would be ludicrous. There are also bands out there like Phish, for example, which have never had a charting single, or the Grateful Dead, which had only one top forty single in their career, that were able to sell out arenas and stadiums for years and decades. Both acts made millions touring. I would refrain from not calling them a “hit” simply because they failed to produce radio friendly songs. The only song I have heard from them is "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor", which I really like. I will be seeing them live on March 18th, so I am really looking forward to seeing how they perform live.

Have you even heard any of their material, Sebastian?? No, I haven't. It's not that I'm judging them, it's just that I'm quite doubtful that the Arctic Monkeys will hit the Billboard Top 40.

By say that, you are most certainly judging them. I'm sure last summer when James Blunt was #1 in the UK, many would've said that...and look at him now...

I'm sure last summer when James Blunt was #1 in the UK, many would've said that...and look at him now... I don't mean to judge. There are many, many talented artists out there who haven't performed well on the Hot 100. I just have a feeling that the Arctic Monkeys (although they may be great) won't have a big pop hit in the US. I don't mean ill - no offense, please. As for James Blunt, I truly am amazed that he's hit #8 in the US. I never would have expected it.
