"Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" makes an A

Fox could have another megahit to rival "American Idol." The game show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" amused 26.5 million Tuesday night. That showing was the best opening by any new series this season. Heck, it was the best series premiere in the Fox network's history.
Yes, "5th Grader" had the advantage of following "Idol." The 90-minute show of men singing pulled in a whopping 30.7 million.
But to hold that many of the viewers ... "5th Grader" must be doing something right. Could it be: Giving the public family viewing? We'll know more after "5th Grader" airs again at 9:30 tonight.
Fox was the victor with an average 29.6 million viewers in prime time. CBS was second with 13.2 million. The rest: NBC with 9 million, ABC with 7.1 million and The CW with 3.4 million. The networks finished in the same order in the 18-to-49 age group.
At 8 p.m., CBS ran second to "Idol." "NCIS" fascinated 16.2 million -- an impressive showing against the singing contest. The "Dateline NBC" predator show, set in Flagler Beach, drew 6.1 million.
In the 9 p.m. hopur, CBS ran second to Fox with "The Unit" pulling in 12.9 million.
In the 10 p.m. hour, the networks were almost evenly matched. NBC led with "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" mesmerizing 11.7 million. CBS reran "Criminal Minds" and drew 10.5 million. ABC's "To Iraq and Back: Bob Woodruff Reports" was the choice of 10.1 million.
That was an excellent showing for Woodruff, because ABC was doing little business earlier in the evening. If only ABC had put Woodruff behind "Grey's Anatomy." That tremendous news special deserves the widest audience possible. That program could be the best thing ABC offers this season.
