Gay marriage comes to Springfield

SAN DIEGO - A recurring character on The Simpsons will come out of the closet next season in an episode about same-sex weddings.
But the show's producers aren't saying exactly who will be revealed to be gay.

The revelation came on Monday at Comic-Con International, a fan gathering in California.
"We have a show where, to raise money, Springfield legalizes gay marriage," one of the producers, Al Jean, told a crowd of fans. "Homer becomes a minister by going on the internet and filling out a form. A long-time character comes out of the closet, but I'm not saying who."
"It's Homer!" joked Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons.
Although Homer did once admit that he prefers the company of men, it's far more likely that the character in question will be someone else. There is certainly no shortage of suspects.
The most obvious one is Waylon Smithers, the assistant to Homer's boss, Mr. Burns.
Since the show debuted in 1989, Smithers has barely been able to contain his affection for his evil superior. One of the show's running jokes has been to make references to the sexuality of Smithers – like letting viewers know he has a collection of Malibu Stacy dolls – without actually stating outright that he is homosexual.
Some are also speculating that the much-married Selma, Marge's sister, may be turn out to be a lesbian. And Grandpa Simpson once said he spent time in his younger days in a dress.
Gay-themed jokes have also been made about other characters, including Milhouse, Bart's best friend.
