It happened to me too, but I go deeper....in 1998 I had a song called Because of you by 98 Degrees. That went to #2 numerous times on my daily, but never got to #1 and was top song of 1998.

Never happened for me. Interestingly, the shortest #1 run for a year-end #1 was in 2000 when 'Absolutely Everybody' by Vanessa Amorosi spent 4 weeks. Only one song has managed 4 weeks at #1 on my chart so far, so perhaps I'm still looking for my #1 song of 2005.....

Never.
Although Goo Goo Dolls only peaked at #3 with "Here is Gone" and finished #3 for the year.

It's happened twice on my chart.
In 1988, Brenda Russell and Joe Esposito peaked at #3 with "Piano In The Dark", but claimed the #1 spot for the year.
In 2003, Matchbox Twenty spent 3 weeks at #2 with "Unwell", but scored one more point than Fleetwood Mac to land at #1 for the year.

It almost happened last year... "Come Clean" was #3 on the year-end, but only 10 points out of #1.

Yes.
2002, Michelle Branch's "All You Wanted" spent 9 weeks at #2 and that ended her up as the #1 song of the year.
