...Upper Sections.
This is to mean more than just #1 staying put for long periods of time.
From 9/7-10/19/02:
Vanessa Carlton's "Ordinary Day" and Shakira's "Objection (Tango)" were the Top 2 during that entire time, and Rob's "The Sunshine" was #3 for 9/14-10/5. Vanessa was #1 for the first two weeks, then lost to Shakira for the next two. 10/5/02 was the infamous "tie week" in which BOTH were #1, then Vanessa was the sole #1 for the last two weeks after.
From 3/8-4/5/03:
Four-fifths of the Top 5 were Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You", T.A.T.U.'s "All the Things She Said", Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty", and JC Chasez's "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)". The fifth spot belonged to the Dixie Chicks' "Landslide" for the first three weeks, and then belonged to No Doubt's "Running" for the last two.
Avril: 1-5-4-4-5
T.A.T.U.: 3-3-2-1-2
Christina: 5-2-3-3-3
JC: 4-1-1-2-1
From Summer 2003:
Another Top 5 situation. This summer had different pockets of stagnation, so I'm lumping them together on this one.
Things weren't off to that great a start, as the Top 3 were the same three during the entire month of June. Those three were Frankie J's "Don't Wanna Try", Stacie Orrico's "Stuck", and Jewel's "Intuition". Frankie, of course, was #1 the whole time. Stacie was #2 for the first two weeks and Jewel was #2 for the last two weeks.
But from there, it only got worse. For the next five weeks (7/5-8/2), the whole Top 5 were the same five. Frankie and Jewel were still hanging around, but joining them were Matchbox 20's "Unwell", Kelly Clarkson's "Miss Independent", and Jason Mraz's "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)".
Frankie: 1-1-1-2-2
Jewel: 2-2-2-1-1
MB20: 4-3-3-5-5
Kelly: 3-4-4-4-4
Jason: 5-5-5-3-3
Matchbox left the Top 5 after that week, so taking their place for the next two weeks after was Michelle Branch's "Are You Happy Now?". But from there, things soon returned to state of normalcy.
From 12/6/03-1/24/04:
The problem here was the turnover rate was at quite a low. This is best told by showing those who came and went during that time:
Nickelback - Someday: 2-2-1-1-1-1-1-1
Chingy f/Ludacris & Snoop Dogg - Holidae In: 3-4-5-out
Michelle Branch - Breathe: 5-5-4-4-5-5-out
Fefe Dobson - Take Me Away: 4-3-3-3-3-3-4-3
Nelly Furtado - Powerless (Say What You Want): 1-1-2-2-2-2-2-4
Entered 12/27/03:
Clay Aiken - Invisible: 5-4-4-3-2
Entering the Top 5 on 1/17/04 was Good Charlotte's "Hold On". They lost #5 to Kelis's "Milkshake" the next week.
From 3/6-5/22/04:
Oh, boy...one of the most chaotic periods of my chart's history, and it all centered around songs that just wouldn't die.
First, those that came and went as normal:
Evanescence's "My Immortal" hit #1 on 3/14/04 and lasted there for 3 weeks. They left the Top 5 on 4/22.
Maroon 5's "This Love" was #1 for the entire month of April. They left the Top 5 on 5/15.
Now for those that were NOT normal :
Britney Spears's "Toxic" started this time period at #1, but that was its only week at #1. But she didn't leave the Top 5 until 5/8: 1-2-3-3-3-4-2-3-2-out.
The Black Eyed Peas' "Hey Mama" was just starting on the chart on 3/6, but by 4/3 it was in the Top 5: 4-3-3-2-3-1-4-4.
Switchfoot's "Meant to Live" was only debuting on 3/14, but arrived just in time (Top 5 on 4/24) to cause their own chaos: 5-1-2-3-3.
Usher's "Burn" was #1 for 5/15/04.
The Aftermath:
Avril Lavigne brought an end to the chaos on 5/22 when she hit #1 and stayed there for 5 weeks. The Black Eyed Peas made another go at #1, but she blocked them. She eventually lost #1 to Switchfoot's second go-round.
From 11/13-12/25/04:
Part 1
You can't get more stagnated than this. The Top 3 remained frozen solid for 11/13-12/4.
#1 was Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway".
#2 was Seether's "Broken" featuring Amy Lee.
#3 was Switchfoot's "Dare You to Move".
And Green Day's "American Idiot" was #4 for each week except 11/13.
Part 2
The entire Top 4 remained frozen for the last three weeks.
#1 was still "Breakaway".
#2 was Switchfoot.
#3 was Green Day.
#4 was Destiny's Child's "Lose My Breath".
All in all, Switchfoot spent four weeks at #3 and four weeks at #2 before spending two weeks at #1. Is it any wonder why they have the slowest-ever rise to #1 at 19 weeks?
This is to mean more than just #1 staying put for long periods of time.
