A bold and mature follow-up to "Let Go"
After releasing a debut album that spawned three huge worldwide singles and went on to sell over 14 million copies worldwide, the pressure was definitely on as Avril released her much anticipated follow-up. What did we get in return? A very mature sound and a brand new Avril Lavigne. Although the sound is edgier, harder, and definitely not what her young fanbase is accustomed too, it's definitely a crowd-pleaser and should help fill stadiums just like the "Let Go" album did.
The album's definite highlights come from the lead two singles; Dont Tell Me and My Happy Ending. Don't Tell Me is a testament to abstinence and keeps things real while My Happy Ending is just your extremely catchy and fun summer jam. Other obvious winners include Take Me Away, Together, He Wasn't, How Does It Feel, Nobody's Home, and Slipped Away. All of them showing amazing growth in songwriting and vocal ability. The exceptionally catchy "He Wasnt" will probably stand as the 3rd single as Avril has already claimed it her favourite off the album. "Slipped Away", a tribute to her deceased grandfather, is also beautiful lyrically and shows why Avril doesn't fall in the same category as Britney.
Despite all the positive, the album takes a nasty turn in tracks #8-#11. Songs like Forgotten, Who Knows, Fall To Pieces, and Freak Out are all obvious fillers and have absolutely no melody at all. Although "Forgotten" can be catchy at times, it's exactly what its title suggests, forgotten.
To be frank, that is the major difference between "Under My Skin" and "Let Go". Her debut album spawned 12 amazing singles that were all as catchy as the one before it. The difference here is that she has developed an album with 8 extremely well-produced tracks with a few dissapointing ones. If that's it's only flaw, then I say Avril has lived well up to the expectations set before her.
Rating: 9/10
