Napster has rejigged its pricing for music downloads. The price it charges for individual tracks has now been reduced to 79p, which is the charge Apple levies though iTunes. The change has been made, claims Napster, in response 'to brisk Christmas sales', but going toe-to-toe with Apple on price clearly reflects iTunes continuing domination of the market. The new charge will be applied the across the board to the 1 million-strong Napster catalogue.
Albums will now cost £7.95 to purchase, and - like individual tracks - they can be purchased with Napster Pre-Paid Cards and Online Music Vouchers across the Dixons Group chain, TM Retail and Post Office stores.
What is also driving the price cuts is the imminent launch of Napster's portable subscription service, dubbed Napster To Go. This offers subscribers the chance to listen to their choice of tracks on any compatible MP3 player - for a monthly fee rather than on a song-basis.
'With Napster clearly on its way to success we wanted to further fuel our growth with more attractive pricing and create an even broader appeal to music fans,' said Leanne Sharman, Napster vice-president and UK general manager. 'By dropping our store prices in preparation for the launch of Napster To Go we are able to offer UK music fans an unbeatable proposition.'
Other price reductions involve bulk purchases via Napster Track Packs. These will now be priced at £33.99 for 50 (68p per track), £17.99 for 25 (72p per track), and £10.99 for 15 (73p per track).
