My computer runs on Windows XP with the blue sky/green hills background.
After the computer is on for a while, the top of the screen (the sky) turns reddish, and any icon placed in that area turns gray-ish.
Everything returns to normal when the computer is rebooted. Does anyone know what's up with the colour change? Is it a warning sign of some sort? The colour change makes it look like the monitor is going or something. I sure hope not, since it's a relatively new computer.

more then likely your monitor is beginning to burn, after being on for awhile, the image can make the screen burn and remain on the screen after it burns

My monitor is like that too. The top left corner is permenantly effected now where the blue toolbar is actually purple. Sometimes is worse than others but I think it's because my sister put the subwoofer on top of the monitor....

Thanks for the help.
Now I will definitely turn off the monitor immediately when I'm not using it.

I would definately get a new monitor. This happened at work one day. Finally, the monitor just stopped working altogether. Now we use all IBM-systems as it is easier to have everything together and the same. Even monitors.
