Ever since my computer was put together, it has been periodically freezing. Usually it's while the screen saver is on and often times while I'm just playing music but occationally it'll be in the middle of something. I was wondering if anyone knew why and if there's a way to prevent it. Could it have something to do with the fact that my power supply is a stronger voltage than the motherboard asks for? I defrag the computer on a bi-daily basis.

Try upgrading your memory.

Also, try removing any unnecessary programs from your startup. Start/ Run/ Type in "msconfig"/ Click OK/ Click on the "Start Up" Tab'. From there there you can disable whatever you don't need starting up. Just don't disable any drivers, antivirus, or anything that you need running. It's safe to disable stuff like QuickTime, RealPlayerUpdate, iTunes, iPod Service, Winamp (system tray), or other extra stuff that just uses up memory.

Running less programs at the same time will also help.

Turn off your Screen Saver. When I had windows 98, that was the reason why it was freezing up for me. I've been on windows XP since the day it came out, and I've never had my computer freeze up, not even once!
Running less programs at the same time would help too.

msconfig! I was looking for that for ages! Could have helped my other computer a lot but I couldn't find out the thing to type! Thanks!
No, I'm pretty sure it's winamp. It froze again today and the computer seems to only freeze when winamp is on. Pretty bad considering it's the only mp3 player I like to listen to. My RAM is 256 so it's weird that it would freeze like that.

SAM2 also freezes my computer so it's probably the whole music playing thing. It makes me sad.

SAM2 also freezes my computer so it's probably the whole music playing thing. It makes me sad. I still think that you need more memory. I'm curious about a few things... -Go to "Start / Programs / Accesories / System Tools / System Information" -Click System Summary What's does it say for OS Name? Total Physical Memory? Available Physical Memory? Total Virtual Memory? Available Virtual Memory? -------- Right click on "My Computer", Click "Properties" OR go to the "Control Panel" and click "System". What does it say for GHz or MHz? How much RAM? Does it say "256 MB of RAM"? What's your processor type? (Pentium 4, Pentium 3, Athlon XP, Celeron, ...) --------- When your computer freezes: Can you still move the mouse around? Does it slow down and then freeze? Does it unfreeze after a while or do you have to reboot by hitting the power or pressing ctrl+alt+delete?

What's does it say for OS Name? -Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Total Physical Memory? -256.00MB
Available Physical Memory? -82.22MB
Total Virtual Memory? -770.38MB
Available Virtual Memory? -496.74
-------- What does it say for GHz or MHz? -2.40GHz
How much RAM? Does it say "256 MB of RAM"? -224MB of RAM (although I think it should have been 256?)
What's your processor type? (Pentium 4, Pentium 3, Athlon XP, Celeron, ...) -Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
---------
When your computer freezes: Can you still move the mouse around? -Nope. Completely locks up. alt+ctrl+del certainly doesn't work. (it doesn't work otherwise anyway. I don't know how to use it to restart the computer even if I could....?)
Does it slow down and then freeze? -Nope. Locks up totally out of the blue. Doesn't make any clicking noises beforehand or nothing.
Does it unfreeze after a while or do you have to reboot by hitting the power or pressing ctrl+alt+delete? -Well, I've left it on while sleeping and at work and come home to find it has frozen and stayed frozen for hours and hours so I don't think it unfreezes. I have to restart by hitting the restart button.

While typing the last post, it froze again... prolly cuz I was playing an mp3 using Real Player One this time. So I guess it's not winamp afterall!

There's no way I'd have a virus because it's been happening since before I got the internet hooked up and all of the same things I use I used on my old computer (before I upgraded) and that never froze. I should try it just in case though.

You may have the wrong type of memory. That could also be why your RAM isn't showing up properly.
I would just talk to your friend that set up your computer for you and see if he can help you out. I really don't know what else to suggest.
