When I first heard they were releasing this song, I thought it would flop...i didnt think it would make the top 50 and i thought "Shut Up" was much more pop-friendly. Im absolutely stunned that its looking like itll crack the top 10, but im glad because BEP is different, and we need them in the Rap world while we have those 'rappers' like Lil Jon & J-Kwon

I'm also quite surprised that "Hey Mama" is doing so well. I thought it would barely crack the top 50, especially after "Shut Up" flopped.

I think the Radio Remix with more Fergie helped it. Its much more catchy with her.

Yes and No. Yes because "Shut Up" flopped and I thought it would peak just outside the top 40 and No because it's just a very good song and with rap getting on the Pop chart, this would get on as well.

I would also say yes and no as far as being surprised about "Hey Mama's" success. Yes, because of "Shut Up's" flop status (because we all know that these days, if you make one flop, record labels tend to give up on you). And no because it's so catchy. Actually, I think it's much more Pop-radio friendly than "Shut Up" was. And besides BEP is a different type of rap. They don't rap about b*tches, hos, ice, mansions, cars, or "poppin' bottles." I only wish they'd had more success on R&B radio...especially with "Where Is The Love?"

And besides BEP is a different type of rap. They don't rap about b*tches, hos, ice, mansions, cars, or "poppin' bottles." That's one of the primary reasons why the Black Eyed Peas are one of my favourite rap acts... because they have their own style, and don't exactly fit in the mold that most other rappers seem to come from.

Don't forget that Hey Mama has been used in a very recent and well-played iPod/iTunes commercial. It was also a big hit in the U.K.

"Shut Up" did a lot better in Canada, didn't it? I heard the song a lot on the local station.

I am surprised that ''Hey Mama'' is doing that well, considering that ''Shut Up'' didn't perform that great on the charts in the U.S.

"Shut Up" had decent success in Canada. I mean, the video hit #1 on MuchMusic's countdown.
But am I surprised at the reception "Hey Mama" is getting? Honestly, no. True, "Shut Up" wasn't a huge smash or anything, but it also did follow "Where Is The Love," so any song would seem to fail compared to that. And honestly, look at some of the crap that's on the radio these days. "Tipsy" anyone? At least "Hey Mama" is QUALITY crap.

I agree about the Shit-factor about "Tipsy" but the more I listen to "Hey Mama" i like it more and more and thats just BEP's style...theyre different, and its good.
