Week 410 – January 5th, 2019Christmas holidays are nearly over and it’s time to review the first edition of 2019. Clara Mae dominated the last two weeks in 2018 and did it this week to. “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#1) is defending its title while “Nada” (#2, “Nothing”) reached the first time the runner’s up spot. This climb leads to the chance that Shakira could take over next week. She switched the spot with LANY’s former #1 “I don’t love you anymore” (#3). Two songs are debuting in the Top 5. Avril Lavigne recently reached #1 with “Head above water” (#8). Now she returned in the Top 5 with her recent single “Tell me it’s over” (#4). She is followed by Emma who climbed up one spot with “Mondiale” (#5, “World”).
Just missing the Top 5 is country disco/pop by Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus. “Nothing breaks like a heart” (#7) climbed up one spot and should reach the Top 5 as soon as possible. Maybe by next week “Nothing breaks like a heart” is changing with “I don’t love you anymore”. “Head above water” (#8) by Avril Lavigne dropped three spots and is on its way out of my Top 10 which also is “Le parole non mentono” (#9, “Words don’t lie”) by Annalsia. And I should not forget that “Where we go” (#10) by Pink also dropped one spot and it seems that it could be its last week in my Top 10. The only new song within my Top 10 is “Thank you” (#9) by Lena. This critical song about envy and disfavour is climbing up the chart very fast and could be one of the hits in 2019.
The greatest gainer is a K-pop song. It is “Solo” (#71) by Jennie who is part of Blackpink. It is a nice song and at the moment I’m sure that this song will reach my Top 50 at least. Generally this week sees 17 new entries. The highest one is by Lennon Stella who is known for her role as Maddie Conrad in the TV series “Nashville”. She had several smaller hits out of this series and now she released her first EP “Love, me”. I charted “Breakaway” (#88) which dropped out this week. This week her song “Bad” (#55) – had been released as a single before “Breakaway” – got its debut. As I like this EP I’m sure that this song will do well on my chart. “Bad” isn’t the only song by Lennon Stella which debuts this week. Her other song is “Your best” (#91) with Maisy Stella. It is a song from the 5th season of “Nashville” I’m actually watching. So there will be more songs from this 5th season in the future on my chart. The other song out of this series which is debuting this week is “All of me” (#88) by Clare Bowen & Sam Palladio
Other debuts are “Metronom” (#81), “Zeit” (#82, “Time”) and “Meilensteine” (#83, “Mile stones”) by Tagtraeumer, “Let it rain” (#86) by Clare Bowen, “Bring me to life” (#87) – a cover version of the Evanescence classic – by Barbie Sailers feat. Violet Orlandi, “Cheating on U” (#89) by Lacy Cavalier, “Colder” (#92) by Nina Nesbitt, “I knew you when” (#93) by Marianas Trench, “Crazy young love” (#94) by iamsimon, “Wonder woman” (#95) by Waterloo Revival, “Not gonna cry” (#96) by Emma Steinbakken, “California” (#97) by Boy In Space, “Cool” (#98) by Rachel Reinert and “She ain’t me” (#99) by Sophia Scott.TW | LW | WI | Peak | Title | Artist | Album |

80 – 71
|
| international | note | 80 | | #18 #9 #18 #49 #4 #12 #3 #3 #2
| Anna-Marie – 2002
Points: 847.9 Peak: #18 Weeks: 18 Album: Speak your mind Airplay: #85
Several artists released songs about the past. Anne-Marie also released such a song. Catch phrase in most of these songs is “Hit me baby” from Britney Spears 1990s hit. The lyrics should remember these days while the sound is totally 2010s. I like this song and it is the highest charting one for me with this theme.
| 79 | | no success
| Brynn Elliott – Might not like me
Points: 850.5 Peak: #22 Weeks: 19 Album: - Airplay: #68
This song about a self-confident woman and a man who couldn’t handle this fact really shot straight into my heart. I like the lyrics and the refrain is remarkable. I hope there will be more by her in the future.
| 78 | | #7
| Emma – L’isola
Points: 852.8 Peak: #13 Weeks: 18 Album: Essere qui Airplay: #50
For the 2nd time Emma can be found in this list. This time it is “L’isola” (“The island”) which reached a peak within my Top 20. Not bad, but she can do it better. And she proved it this year with two #1’s which can be found later in this list.
| 77 | | no success
| Maggie Rogers – Give a little
Points: 864.1 Peak: #20 Weeks: 18 Album: Heard in a past life Airplay: #76
Maggie Rogers had minor hits in the alternative scene in the USA with “Alaska” and “Dog days”. Both song failed to get my attention, but “Give a little” is a cute song which did very well for me. I’m not sure about her other songs, but I’ll give her 3rd album (release date 18th January) – her first after two independent releases – a chance.
| 76 | | #3 #1 #2 #31 #2 #4 #1 #1 #2
| / Rudimental feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen – These days
Points: 888.6 Peak: #12 Weeks: 18 Album: Toast to our differences Airplay: #61
Somehow interesting that none of these artists every reached my Top 10. Since Jess Glynne’s debut on a Clean Bandit track she is a regular guest on my chart, but this one is by far her best charting song (in the UK this one had been her 6th #1 which made her the most successful female singer in history).
| 75 | | no success
| Cold War Kids – Luck down
Points: 925.7 Peak: #16 Weeks: 21 Album: LA devine Airplay: #63
A year ago Cold War Kids had #1 hits from LA Devine. I really like her album “LA Devine” and the album cut “Luck down”. It is a nice song, but far away from her #1 smash hits.
| 74 | | #92
| Gavin James – Hearts on fire
Points: 927.4 Peak: #18 Weeks: 21 Album: - Airplay: #59
I started charting “Hearts on fire” very late. I knew this song before March, but then it rose very fast into my Top 30 where it peaked at #18. At the moment Irish singer Gavin James is getting airplay with his 2018 hit “Always” in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Maybe this one will be his first hit here.
| 73 | | #1
| Wanda – Columbo
Points: 928.5 Peak: #5 Weeks: 23 Album: Niente Airplay: #96
Autumn 2017 Austrian alternative rock band Wanda released their single “Columbo”. It took me until November 2017 before I started charting this smash hit. By this time this song had spent a single week at #1 in Austria and it had been the bands biggest hit so far. On my chart they reached my Top 10 by the middle of December and peaked at #5 in January. With this peak they equalised their hit single “Bussi baby” (“Kiss baby”) which also peaked at #5 back in 2015.
| 72 | | #12 #16 #11 #80 #8 #19 #4 #2 #4
| Rita Ora – Let you love me
Points: 929.7 Peak: #3 Weeks: 12 (still charting) Album: Phoenix Airplay: #147
Recently British singer Rita Ora climbed up my chart with “Let you love me”. She had several hits on my chart, but this one is now her only Top 3 hit for me. I love this song and as she had hits in the past I don’t doubt that she will reach this part of my chart again.
| 71 | | #10 #37 #25
| Helene Fischer – Achterbahn
Points: 930.6 Peak: #7 Weeks: 22 Album: Helene Fischer Airplay: #104
Haven’t I pointed out that “Schlager” isn’t my genre? I’m sure I did it when I reviewed last year her hit “Nur mit dir”. This year she returns with her biggest hit “Achterbahn”. This song went all the way into my Top 10 and is now her first Top 10 hit for me. By the way she is one of the most successful female singer worldwide as the New York Times pointed out although no one outside Austria, Germany and Switzerland knows her!

90 – 81
|
| international | note | 90 | | no success
| Norma Jean Martine – Only in my mind
Points: 793.7 Peak: #14 Weeks: 19 Album: Only in my mind Airplay: #74
At #90 you can find Norma Jean Martine for the first time in this part of my review. The title track of her debut album “Only in my mind” did well on my chart with a peak in my Top 20. Generally “Only in my mind” is quite a good album.
| 89 | | no success
| Kelly Clarkson – American woman
Points: 799.8 Peak: #16 Weeks: 16 Album: - Airplay: #102
Do I like cover song or not? That question doesn’t matter here. Back in the 1970s The Guess Who had a big hit with “American woman”. In 2018 Kelly Clarkson covered this song and it found its way into my chart. As I’m not really known for charting cover songs, but this one did quite well.
| 88 | | no success
| Norma Jean Martine – No more alone
Points: 804.7 Peak: #13 Weeks: 19 Album: Only in my mind Airplay: #70
Two spots before Norma Jean Martine could be found for the first time within my year-end Top 100. Now she returns with another track from her debut album. “No more alone” did only a little bit better with peaking at #13 and so it outperformed this title track on this list too.
| 87 | | no success
| Norma Jean Martine – Hang my hat
Points: 810.0 Peak: #19 Weeks: 17 Album: Only in my mind Airplay: #83
The Norma Jean Martine triple is perfect with “Hang my hat”. Let’s look into the details. This song charted only 17 weeks, when her other songs charted 19 weeks. It peaked at #19 when the other songs did better. Also the airplay says that I listened more to her other songs. Does this all matter? No! This song had the better chart run and so “Hang my hat” outperformed her previous hits.
| 86 | | #68
| / Niall Horan feat. Maren Morris – Seeing blind
Points: 811.6 Peak: #17 Weeks: 17 Album: Flicker Airplay: #65
Country singer Maren Morris did it again. Last year she had a big duet hit with Thomas Rhett. This year she was featured on a Niall Horan track. “Seeing blind” only charted in Ireland, but for me it was one of the best duets in 2018.
| 85 | | no success
| Kayef – Allein
Points: 812.6 Peak: #17 Weeks: 16 Album: Modus Airplay: #92
Kayef is a 24-year old German rapper. As rap music isn’t my genre I’ve forgotten that he had three single “hits” back in 2014. As this song was suggested to me via youtube I was really surprised what I got to hear. “Allein” (“Alone”) is a perfect breakup song with limited time rapping. This song did very well and brought him his first appearance in my year-end Top 100 with his first charting song.
| 84 | | #66 | Alice Merton – Lash out
Points: 823.2 Peak: #14 Weeks: 17 Album: - Airplay: #108
Back to back the next artist from Germany can be found. In 2016 Alice Merton rocked the charts with her debut “No roots”. Now she returned with “Lash out”. In my eyes this is a good song, but not as good as her debut single.
| 83 | | #19 #8 #20 #18 #4 #4 #8 #13 #9 #4
| Selena Gomez – Back to you
Points: 823.9 Peak: #17 Weeks: 17 Album: Soundtrack – 13 reasons why: Season 2 Airplay: #95
After releasing three non-album singles in 2017 with minor success on my chart she came back with “Back to you”. This is also no single from an upcoming new album, but it had been part of the soundtrack to the Netflix series “13 reasons why”. I did better than her previous singles, but failed to reach my Top 10.
| 82 | | #70 #88 #12 #20 #28 #33 #45 #51 #31
| Taylor Swift – Delicate
Points: 828.6 Peak: #18 Weeks: 19 Album: Reputation Airplay: #84
Back in 2017 Taylor Swift started her chart run with songs from “Reputation”. In at #82 is the latest single from this album. “Delicate” did well, but Taylor Swift has other standards. Every other artist would be proud reaching the Top 20, but her it is only a sign for a good, but not outstanding track.
| 81 | | #94 #66 #47
| Niall Horan – On the loose
Points: 842.8 Peak: #19 Weeks: 19 Album: Flicker Airplay: #73
“Seeing blind” had been his first appearance with in the Top 100. Now Niall Horan returns with 4th single from his debut solo album “Flicker”. I’m not really a fan of him, but this song is quite good. You see the difference? “Delicate” had nearly the same stats, but here I’m sure that this is quite a good song. I hope that he will release more songs as “On the loose” in the future.

Week 409 – December 29th, 20182018 is ending with the same #1 as last week. “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#1) by Clara Mae defended its title. I’m really sorry for this song that it didn’t reach my year-end Top 100, but rules are rules. I’m sure that this song will be one of my top hits in 2019. Indie pop band LANY still can be found at #2 with their recent smash “I don’t wanna love you anymore”. These two songs got new concurrence. “Nada” (#3, “Nothing”) by Shakira sprinted up three spots. It is Shakira’s first Top 3 hit, but before 2011 she already had hits as “Whenever wherever” or “Hips don’t lie” to name only a few of her pre-chart hits. “Nada” is the highest charting Spanish song and the first one with a real chance to go all the way to the top. This song is also the only song which didn’t reach #1 in my Top 10 so far. “Nada” is followed by “Head above water” (#4) by Avril Lavigne. I’m really excited for her new album. I hope it will be as good as the first two singles out of it. Next in line is “Le parole non mentono” (#5, “Words don’t lie”) by Annalisa.
On its way to outperform “Le parole non mentono” is another song in Italian. “Mondiale” (#6) is a beautiful song by my core artist Emma. I like this song although it is a little bit too martial because it describes love as “war” or “world war”. Behind this song there are two new songs in this part of my chart. First to mention is country disco/pop “Nothing breaks like a heart” (#7) by Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus. This one is followed by “Tell me it’s over” (#8) by Avril Lavigne. With this edition Avril Lavigne has two songs in my Top 10 at once. Down four spots is “Where we go” (#9) by Pink. Rounding out my Top 10 is “Baby don’t talk” (#10) by LÉON.
This week I’ve two songs which got the greatest gainer of the week award. Both songs debuted last week. The first one is “The less I know” (#24) by Topic feat. Alexander Tidebrink. The other one is “Trouble” (#25) by Parov Stelar feat. Nikki Williams. While I liked “The less I know” with the first listen “Trouble” took awhile, but now this song is sprinting up my chart. This week only sees a handful debuts in the backyard of my chart. The highest debuts are album cuts by Luke Sital-Singh. He debuts with “Nowhere’s home” (#89) and “Cynic” (#90). Other debuts are “Who cares” (#93) by Paul McCartney, “Into you” (#96) by YURI from Girls’ Generation, “Solo” (#98) by Jennie from Blackpink and “Slower” (#99) by Austin Burke.TW | LW | WI | Peak | Title | Artist | Album | | | 1 | 1 | 9 | 1 (2) | Sorry for writing all the songs about you | Clara Mae | Sorry for writing all the songs about you | | (|) | 2 | 2 | 11 | 1 (1) | I don't wanna love you anymore | LANY | Malibu nights | | (|) | 3 | 6 | 7 | 3 | Nada | Shakira | El dorado | | (|) | 4 | 3 | 14 | 1 (4) | Head above water | Avril Lavigne | Head above water | | (|) | 5 | 4 | 17 | 1 (1) | Le parole non mentono | Annalisa | Bye bye | | (|) | 6 | 9 | 8 | 6 | Mondiale | Emma | Essere qui - Boom edition | | (|) | 7 | 12 | 4 | 7 | Nothing breaks like a heart | Mark Ronson feat.
