For 3 weeks it's been a duel at the top between Shakira's “Hips Don't Lie” and “Dani California” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Shakira keeps winning. Natasha Bedingfield is back at #3 with “Unwritten” in her 14th week in the Top 5. It's her 5th week at #3 without getting any higher, and in fact, in her peculiar chart run, she'd been at #3 for 3 weeks before dropping to #5 then the following week back up to #3, which she's held for the past 2 weeks. Other longtime members of the Top 10, “Be Without You” by Mary J Blige and “Walk Away” by Kelly Clarkson, did each reach #1. In fact, with half the year gone, exactly 13 artists have made it to #1 in 2006. That's an average of 2 weeks per artist. Last year by this point there had only been 6 artists on top, half of those weeks by Green Day's “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, 4 more by Mario's “Let Me Love You”, 2 more each by Kelly Clarkson's “Since You Been Gone”, “Lonely No More” by Rob Thomas, and “Gwen Stefani's “Hollaback Girl”, and we were in the early part of Mariah Carey's long reign at the top with “We Belong Together” that lasted through summer into the fall.
There are many fast-rising songs: Rihanna's “Unfaithful”, “Where'd You Go” by Fort Minor, Madonna's “Get Together”, Cassie's “Me & U”, “Buttons” by the Pussycat Dolls, Natasha Bedingfield's “Single”, and “Promiscuous” by Nelly Furtado, among others, but “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley is the one that stands out the most, up to #14 in only it's 4th week in the Top 100 and 2nd week in the Top 50, halving last week's position. Another song to watch out for is Beyonce's “Deja Vu”, which soars 45 spots this week.
One of the longest-charting songs of last year is back in the Top 100. Anna Nalick's “Breathe” was last in the Top 100 in mid-January of this year, one week short of a full year. After that it descended down as far as #200 for 2 weeks in the first half of April, and since then has risen steadily to move back into the Top 100 2 weeks ago. It has remained inside the Top 200 since mid-December 2004. That's 80 weeks, which may be an all-time record for consecutive weeks in the Top 200. And it's currently on the rise. Even so, it's shy by one from being the song with the most overall weeks in the Top 100. That honor goes to “Right Here” by Staind, with 1 year plus 2 weeks in the Top 100. A distant third is “Dare” by the Gorillaz, which nonetheless has been on the Top 100 nearly 2 months longer than 4th place “Talk” by Coldplay. 20 weeks separates 2nd and 4th place. By the way, “Dare” still has 7 weeks to go to match the feat of its predecessor “Feel Good, Inc” – not likely to happen based on its current rate of descent. After 27 weeks inside the Top 30 without reaching the Top 20, since “Dare” fell to #31 and then #34, it's taken less than a month to plummet to #75.
