MILITARIE GUN EARNS SECOND #1; HYPER COMPETITIVE POOL LEADS TO BIG RISES, BIG DROPS, 8 DEBUTS
The big story of 2024's new music for the M4B Radio DJs: it's been surprisingly eventful for the first two months of the year. That's made the chart competitive in recent weeks, culminating in this week's big reorganization featuring several big movers/droppers and eight debuts. The big movers include this week's #1, rising from outside the top 5 to become the second #1 for one of the 2020s' most promising up and comers.
Militarie Gun's "Do It Faster" jumps 6-1 on the strength of strong play in its second run, a run aided by its release to alternative radio (it just made the top 50 last week). "Do It Faster" was widely praised as one of 2023's best rock songs, but initially bombed from too many singles being released at once; followups "Very High" (#10) and "Will Logic" (#6) fared better last year, but the second run for "Faster" now gives the band their second Burner 50 #1, following 2022's "Let Me Be Normal".
The rise for Militarie Gun ends the run of a top 4 that held solidly for four weeks, including the last three weeks in the same exact order. Pile Of Love's former #1 "Happy To Hide" is the only one to stay where it was last week, holding #2 for a fourth consecutive week. Bruce Dickinson's "Afterglow Of Ragnarok", the #1 song of the last three weeks, backs down two spots to #3. NewDad drops one from their #3 peak with "Nightmares", while the Foo Fighters' "The Glass" dips 4-6 - its first week outside the top 5 since its debut week - despite landing the band's second M4B Radio Top 40 #1 just last week.
Three new songs enter this week's top 10, led by a double-digit mover, Pearl Jam's "Dark Matter" which bolts 25-5 in its second week. The title track from the band's upcoming 12th studio album builds on instant impact upon its release last week, with the song debuting at #5 on the M4B Radio Top 40. It's Pearl Jam's fifth Burner 50 top 10 and third to reach the top 5, following "Superblood Wolfmoon" (#2) and "Quick Escape" (#4) from their previous album Gigaton.
Softcult earns their fifth top 10 hit (fourth as lead artists) with "Shortest Fuse" up 15-8, and first since their feature on Teenage Wrist's #1 "Still Love". And Suki Waterhouse jumps 19-10 with "OMG" fresh off of rapid gains on the M4B 40. Other songs to watch in the coming weeks include "Future Proof" by Many Eyes, Keith Buckley's post-Every Time I Die band, up 21-16, and shoegaze-inflected indie band Hotline TNT's "Stump" up 38-19.
Boston Manor has the week's top debut with "Container" at #22. It's the UK band's first new release since their 2022 album Datura, which spawned their most recent #1 "Passenger".
