PUNK/EMO SUPERGROUP PULL SHOCKING UPSET, EARN CHART'S SIXTH #1 CLIMB FROM OUTSIDE TOP 10
On the strength of strong play since the start of January and its inclusion in M4B's recently launched Check 'Em Out forum, Pile Of Love, a supergroup whose members come from various punk, pop punk and emo bands but play 90s-influenced power pop/jangle pop, unexpectedly land the Burner 50's new #1 with "Happy To Hide". It advances from #12 to become the second new #1 of 2024, the band's first and the sixth song in chart history to reach #1 from outside the top 10; the others to do so were "Aquasun" by Basement (16-1, 2016), "The Workers Are Few" by '68 (11-1, 2017), "Dweeb" by Teenage Wrist (11-1, 2018), "Holiday" by Turnstile (13-1, 2021) and Loathe and Teenage Wrist's "Is It Really You?" (16-1, 2022). (It's worth mentioning that four of the previous five ranked top 10 in their respective release years' year end charts, and "Aquasun", "Dweeb" and "Holiday" are among my favorite songs of all time, so "Happy To Hide" is in elite company.)
Pile Of Love, who have released music since 2021, features the drummer and guitarist of post-hardcore band Drug Church (who also hit #1 two years ago with "Million Miles Of Fun") and the bassists of The Story So Far and State Champs. Nothing from their 2021 debut album charted, but their 2022 EP Flake On The Future had a #18 hit with "Over & Out". "Happy To Hide" comes from the recently released EP Super Sometimes.
Elsewhere on the chart, Bruce Dickinson holds on to #2 for a second week with "Afterglow Of Ragnarok", Duff McKagan slips 1-3 with "I Just Don't Know" after a single week at #1, the Foo Fighters' former #1 "The Glass" drops 3-4, and Glitterer gets a 9-5 lift with "Just A Place". No new songs enter this week's top 10, though strong play could propel Mannequin Pussy's "Sometimes" (14-11), Wisp's "Your Face" (20-12) and NewDad's "Nightmares" (21-13) up there as soon as next week. Hardcore band Gouge Away have the week's only debut at #43 with "Stuck In A Dream".
