THE BEATLES' "FINAL" SONG "NOW AND THEN" TOPS BURNER 50
As the Thanksgiving holiday lowered my play thresholds and dislodged previously strong contenders, perhaps the one name in contemporary music that has endured the strongest despite prevailing trends and preferences has reached #1 with a lost song completed this year and dubbed the "final" new song of their catalog. A month after its release, the Beatles are #1 on the Burner 50 with "Now And Then", up from #4 last week to become their first (and presumably, barring anything like a viral TikTok resurgence, only) #1 on the chart.
"Now And Then" was constructed from a demo tape John Lennon recorded prior to his December 1980 murder. The surviving Beatles used the demo tape to create two new Beatles songs for their late 90s retrospective documentary and compilation albums, The Beatles Anthology, but work on "Now And Then" stalled at the time because existing technology couldn't isolate noise on the original demo. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr recently completed the song with assistance from new editing technology that filmmaker Peter Jackson used for his Beatles documentary Get Back.
Lennon and George Harrison, who died in 2001, now become the fourth and fifth artists to reach #1 on the Burner 50 posthumously. They follow Dolores O'Riordan on the Cranberries' "Wake Me When It's Over" in 2019, Chris Cornell on "Patience" in 2020, and Chester Bennington on Linkin Park's "Lost" earlier this year.
The Beatles' run at #1 might not last long, though. A week after becoming their first ever top 20 debut, the Foo Fighters vault 18-3 with "The Glass", instantly making them contenders for the next #1. The rest of the top 10 is mostly static, though Trauma Ray's "Halley" (12-11), Duff McKagan's "I Just Don't Know" (15-13), Megan Thee Stallion's "Cobra" (30-14) and Mike Shinoda's "Already Over" (23-15) all stand a chance of making next week's top 10.
Softcult has the week's highest of four debuts with "Haunt You Still" at #43. It's their first song as lead artists to make the chart since an impressive run with their Teenage Wrist collab "Still Love".
