HEAVENWARD EARNS RECORD BREAKING #1 WITH "WISH"
Heavenward has broken a record and achieved a chart first with their fourth #1 "Wish", which jumps 3-1 on this week's Burner 50 to end the one-week reign of Citizen's "When I Let You Down", which drops to #2. "Wish", which re-entered the chart in late September, now becomes the first song in chart history to hit #1 following a re-entry. The song also tops the chart in its 17th week in the top 50, breaking the record held by Milk Teeth's "Prism" for the longest time it's taken for a song to reach #1. ("Prism" still took the longest for a song with a consecutive number of weeks.)
"Wish" initially peaked at #3 and spent 12 weeks in the top 50 in winter 2022 upon its release from Heavenward's EP Staircase Music; at the time, the song was one of several non-album songs the band released that were unfortunately timed to compete with Teenage Wrist songs, preventing them from reaching #1. It re-charted in anticipation of seeing the band in concert in San Diego, coinciding with a debut on Lyhom's personal chart; it's since crossed over to Jessica and Kim's charts, repeating the feats of the previous three Pyrophonics hits. "Wish" follows "Supernova" (also first released on Staircase Music), "Gasoline" and "Tangerine", the latter two being two of the chart's biggest and two of my personal favorite songs of 2023. ("Choke", the other crossover hit from the album, peaked at #4.)
While Citizen loses the #1 spot this week, they're on their way to potentially competing again as "Can't Take It Slow" advances 11-5 in its fourth week on the chart, the only new song in the top 10. Modern Color's "Fortress" (20-11) and Glitterer's "Plastic" (35-13) are likely to compete for the top 10 in the coming weeks.
Eight songs debut this week following a major chart purge, led by "Now And Then" by the Beatles at #32. The song followed a same path to release as 1995's "Free As A Bird" and 1996's "Real Love", as a John Lennon demo finished by surviving members Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison (Harrison died in 2001). The song billed as the "final" song by the Beatles is the second Burner 50 entry to feature any of the Beatles; the Foo Fighters' "Sunday Rain", featuring an uncredited guest appearance from McCartney, peaked at #10 in 2018.
