THIRD CITIZEN CONCERT GIVES THEM NINTH #1; HEAVENWARD MARCH TOWARD HISTORIC #1
Overcoming their previous single infamously becoming their first to miss the top 10, backlash from releasing too many singles in quick succession, and a lukewarm response to their fifth album Calling The Dogs, Citizen earns their ninth Burner 50 #1 with "When I Let You Down", up three spots from #4 last week. It comes on the heels of seeing the band in concert for a third time on Tuesday, following seeing them in December 2021 on the tour supporting their previous album Life In Your Glass World and in August 2022 as a support act for Joyce Manor. Citizen now gets the same concert bump that was afforded to the last three #1s; "Show Me How" by the Foo Fighters, "Tangerine" by Heavenward and the song they replace, "Digital Self" by Teenage Wrist, all topped the chart in anticipation of and/or as a result of concerts earlier this month.
With "When I Let You Down", Citizen extends its run with the second most #1s on the chart, coming six songs behind the current record holder, Teenage Wrist. Tuesday's concert also helps elevate another Citizen song, "Can't Take It Slow", up seven from 18-11, and opener Modern Color's "Fortress", up 39-20 in its second week.
Meanwhile, Heavenward is on their way to a historic #1 that could happen as early as next week. "Wish" returns to its initial #3 peak up from #7 last week, its 16th nonconsecutive week in the top 50. It's likely to break a record several songs tried and failed to earlier this year: the six-year-old record set by Milk Teeth's "Prism" for longest time to get to #1. It also would make chart history as the first song to hit #1 on a re-entry, something no song has accomplished so far. "Promise Everything" by Basement and "Holiday" by Turnstile, which hit #1 in their first chart runs, got as high as #2 on their second time on, while Teenage Wrist's "Swallow", which re-entered following a "re-release" triggered by their M4B genre success in early 2018, topped out at #2 in both of its runs.
Brooklyn post-hardcore band Sharkswimmer gets their first top 10 with "Head Is A Hideout" up 17-9; the song takes strong influence from the emo and post-hardcore music of the 1990s and 2000s as well as seminal Unkiecore bands like Title Fight and Basement. Anxious gets a five-spot lift with "Down, Down" up 15-10 to become their fifth top 10.
Only two songs debut this week: Glitterer's "Plastic" at #35 and Green Day's "The American Dream Is Killing Me" at #44.
