CITIZEN EARNS EIGHTH #1 WITH "IF YOU'RE LONELY", DEBUTS WITH NEW SINGLE; FOO FIGHTERS, HEAVENWARD GAINING FAST
Overcoming a muted initial response to the song that caused it to debut at a low for their standards #26, and helped by it becoming one of their biggest M4B hits, Citizen has reached #1 on the Burner 50 with "If You're Lonely", the lead single from their upcoming fifth album Calling The Dogs. "If You're Lonely" now accomplishes what their previous three lead singles have done by topping the chart, and pulls them out of a tie with Milk Teeth for the second most #1s, a mark that now stands at eight. It will take them a while before they come close to Teenage Wrist, who lead by far with 14 #1s; "If You're Lonely" replaces the most recent of those, "Dark Sky", sending it to #2 after a three-week reign.
In addition to landing the chart's new #1, the second single from the album, "Hyper Trophy", earns the highest of four debuts at #31 in a highly stacked debut week (more below).
Aiming to get to #1 next are the Foo Fighters' "Show Me How", up 4-3 from strong play and continued M4B support, and Heavenward's immaculate "Tangerine", up 7-5. Both bands are aiming to follow immensely successful songs; the Foos' "Rescued" and "Under You" marked an extremely strong one-two punch of a comeback, while Heavenward's "Gasoline" kept up impressive longevity from maintaining high play counts for me even after it peaked (it's still top 10, ranking at #9 this week). Fireworks' "Goodnight Tomb" jumps 11-7 to become their fourth top 10 and third from Higher Lonely Power on the strength of seeing the band in concert last weekend. "Goodnight Tomb", one of five songs from the album performed at the concert, follows "I Want To Start A Religion With You" (#1) and "God Approved Insurance Plan" (#2).
Guns N' Roses debuts at #38 with "Perhaps", an outtake from their years-in-the-making 2008 album Chinese Democracy that marks their third new song since founding members Slash and Duff McKagan returned to the band in the late 2010s; it instantly outpeaks one of the previous songs, "Hard Skool", which topped out at #42 in 2021. Two spots below, Olivia Rodrigo lands her fourth Burner 50 entry with the highly acclaimed 90s indie-influenced "Bad Idea Right?" at #40.
