TEENAGE WRIST GETS 13TH CAREER, 10TH CONSECUTIVE #1 WITH "STILL LOVE"
Teenage Wrist appear to finally have their third album era in the dominant territory they're used to on the Burner 50, as "Still Love" climbs 3-1 to become their 13th career and 10th consecutive #1 as a result of high praise, strong play and major M4B support in its first weeks of release. "Still Love", the band's collaboration with former tourmates Softcult (it's their first #1), dramatically overcame the Foo Fighters' upset of the album's lead single "Sunshine" and the failure of its followup "Diorama" to even chart. The song ends the Foos' run of six of the last seven weeks at #1 between "Rescued" and "Under You", the latter falling 1-2 after a single week on top.
Teenage Wrist's impressive run of charting entries is a near-perfect run of hits. Since first debuting on the Burner 50 in December 2017, they missed #1 only twice, with their first entry "Swallow" (which peaked at #2 twice, first following its promo single release in December 2017 and again in a "re-release" when it belatedly debuted on Jessica's Top 40 following the #1 successes of "Dweeb" and "Supermachine") and "Chrome Neon Jesus" (which only reached #7 in a highly competitive chart period). Had "Chrome Neon Jesus" not interrupted the streak, the Wrist's 13 #1s would all have been earned consecutively.
This week is actually a big one not just for Teenage Wrist, but also its frontman Marshall Gallagher, as he appears on another two songs in the top 5. Based on the impact of the release of their Pyrophonics album and growing chart support, Heavenward, the band featuring Gallagher on guitar and former Wrist singer/bassist Kamtin Mohager on vocals, rebounds 4-3 with former #1 "Gasoline" and jumps 13-5 with "Choke". The two songs are the third and fourth entries from Pyrophonics to make the Burner 50, as "Wish" (#3) and "Supernova" (#1) from last year's Staircase Music EP also appear on the album. (My most anticipated song on the Wrist's new album is "Humbug", which will be their first song to feature Mohager since the 2019 EP Counting Flies, responsible for their M4B genre peak with the era defining hit "Mary".)
"Choke" is the only new song in the top 10, as there's also a re-entry (technically a re-re-entry). Joyce Manor manages a third wind in the top 10 with "NBTSA", up 14-7 after previously peaking at #5 on the strength of its debut on the Globalchart.
Likely to make next week's top 10 is "Sullenboy" by Fiddlehead, the lead single from the post-hardcore supergroup's upcoming third album Death Is Nothing To Us; the song jumps 20-11 in its third week on the chart. Fiddlehead, whose primary members include Have Heart singer Patrick Flynn and Basement guitarist Alex Henery, has taken off in part because of the absence of new material from Basement, whose last album Beside Myself was released in 2018. Fiddlehead had one of the biggest hits of 2021 with "Million Times", spending two weeks at #1 and ranking #4 for the year despite no crossover support on M4B.
The top debuts come from two bands going on a co-headlining tour covering each other's songs: Manchester Orchestra covering Jimmy Eat World's "Table For Glasses" at #39 and Jimmy Eat World covering Manchester Orchestra's "Telepath", a song that reached #18 in its original form, at #40. (I have not yet seen Manchester Orchestra in concert, but saw Jimmy Eat World in February when they played a free show in Phoenix for Super Bowl week.)
