FOO FIGHTERS UPSET TEENAGE WRIST FOR THIRD #1, FIRST IN 5 YEARS
In one of the chart's most shocking upsets of recent memory, the Foo Fighters have cut short the reign of a highly anticipated Teenage Wrist lead single - with an anticipated lead single of their own. "Rescued" tops the chart in its third week with a 2-1 move, becoming the Foos' third #1 following "Run" in 2017 and "The Line" in 2018. Its rise to the top mirrors "Run", debuting just below the top 20 based on less than a week of release, then shooting into the top 3 in the second and #1 in the third. "Rescued" tops exactly five years after "The Line", which reached #1 immediately after seeing the Foo Fighters in concert. (Coincidentally, "The Line" also displaced the Wrist, breaking a 12-week streak at #1 shared by "Dweeb" and "Supermachine".)
The Wrist's "Sunshine" falls to #2 after two weeks at #1, falling victim to competing for attention with numerous other high profile new releases, though it still could return to #1 as M4B genre support gradually picks up. Pinkshift also are in contention with "To Me", up 15-3 and fighting to become their sixth consecutive #1, a hot streak only the Wrist and Milk Teeth have also achieved.
Besides Pinkshift, Linkin Park hits the top 10 with "Fighting Myself" up 13-9 (coincidentally, previous entry "Lost" and Mike Shinoda's solo single "In My Head" trail right ahead at #7 and #8) and the Oklahoma grungegaze band Money earns their first top 10 with "Flacco" up 12-10. Money, who I discovered via Lyhom, is a spinoff project of the band Cursetheknife, whose song "Feeling Real" reached #19 in early 2021 and who just released a new song this week, "The Gift", that enters the Next in Line list.
Citizen singer Mat Kerekes appears on the top two debuts this week, leading at #29 with "Pick And Choose", the first single from his newly released solo album You Look Like A Stranger. Kerekes also appears in a backing vocal role on Angel Du$t's "Very Aggressive", the second highest debut at #43.
