Compiler's note: This is the final week of my chart as the Burner 50. As of next week, I am downsizing my chart and it will be rebranded as the Burner 30, reverting back to the 30-song list of my chart's May 2015-November 2016 run.
FIREWORKS ROCKET TO #1 FOR FIRST TIME
Three weeks removed from the surprise release of their latest album Higher Lonely Power, Detroit indie band Fireworks have reached #1 on the Burner 50 for the first time with "I Want To Start A Religion With You", up 3-1 and becoming the first new #1 of 2023. The song and its parent album have marked a major triumph for the band nearly a decade in the making, coming nine years after the release of their previous album Oh, Common Life. Before the album's release, the band released only one song during the chart's existence, the one-off single "Demitasse", which originally was meant as the lead single from the album but was left off in the end. It came close to #1 at the time but was derailed by an extremely poor reception to the song among M4B Radio's DJs when it made the M4B Radio Top 40, and settled for a #4 peak. While "Religion" takes the lead, Fireworks have another song climbing up, "God Approved Insurance Plan", which moves 8-6.
Metallica holds at #2 with their former two-week #1 "Lux Æterna", while last week's #1 from Pinkshift "Burn The Witch" slips to #3 after seven nonconsecutive weeks on top, and White Reaper lands its second top 5 hit with "Fog Machine" up 9-4. At #5, one of the chart's most unlikely hits could upend the race for the top as the up and coming British band Chappaqua Wrestling vaults 13-5 with "Wayfinding" after a serious slow burn - the song was released in mid-September 2022, did not make my Next In Line list until late October, and didn't chart until mid-November. "Wayfinding" makes its first trip to the top 10 in its 10th week, the first song to take 10 weeks or longer to get there since "Leave Me Alone" by I Dont Know How But They Found Me, which hit the top 10 in its 12th week in late 2020.
Also new to this week's top 10 are "Someone2Me" by Softcult (11-8), becoming the band's third to get there, and "Gearhead" by Narrow Head (16-10), their fifth. (Interestingly, both bands' previous singles rank a spot below the new ones.)
Two songs debut this week - the Phoebe Bridgers/Julien Baker/Lucy Dacus supergroup Boygenius's "$20" at #48 and Noel Gallagher's "Easy Now" at #49 - though it is not yet known if either will carry over to next week's condensed Burner 30 chart.
