PINKSHIFT, TWO CLOSE #1 CHALLENGERS LEAD FIRST ALL-FEMALE/NONBINARY TOP 3 IN NEARLY FOUR YEARS
For only the third time in chart history, and first time in almost four years, the top 3 songs aren't sung by male singers. Leading the chart for a fifth week at #1 is Pinkshift's "Burn The Witch", one week away from tying their first #1 "Nothing (In My Head)" as their #1 longevity champ, while Softcult aims to displace them with "Drain" up to a new high of #2 in its seventh week. And after a modest start, Hatchie vaults 12-3 with "Nosedive", becoming the Australian indie pop musician's seventh top 5 hit and competing for her third #1 amid becoming a surprisingly successful M4B genre hit in recent weeks.
It's rare for the chart to feature this level of dominance from non-male singers - Pinkshift's lead singer Ashrita Kumar identifies as nonbinary and Softcult's co-leaders Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn and Hatchie (real name Harriette Pilbeam) are women. It only happened twice before, both times in March 2019. First, on March 2, Stand Atlantic spent its third and final week at #1 with "Lost My Cool" while Milk Teeth's "Stain" rebounded 3-2 and Starcrawler's "Hollywood Ending" jumped from #8 to its peak of #3. Two weeks later on March 16, Hatchie earned her first #1 with "Without A Blush" up from #6 the week before, while "Stain" held at #2 and "Lost My Cool" was #3. (Hatchie and Pinkshift did lead non-male top 2s this year - Hatchie's "Quicksand" was #1 while JessieLou's "02.05.2011" reached its #2 peak this past March, and Pinkshift recently held the top 2 with "Burn The Witch" and "In A Breath".)
"Nosedive" leads four new top 10 entries in a moment of much needed house cleaning, joined by Metallica's "Lux Æterna" (18-7), Royal Thunder's "The Knife" (13-9, their first top 10 in five years) and Pile's "Loops" (15-10, their first in almost three years).
Alex G's "Runner", in the midst of a second wind helped in part from attention during the season of year end critics lists, gets a 31-22 jump and is close to becoming just his second top 20 hit out of five appearances. The bedroom pop musician earned his peak with 2015's "Kicker", which hit #15, but largely struggled since then despite ascendant critical praise; he did, however, find far greater success as a producer on Glitterer's 2019 #4-peaker "1001".
Narrow Head has the week's top debut at #38 with "Gearhead", the second single from their upcoming third album Moments Of Clarity.
