Howdy, Chart Fans,
‘tis I… Love, David… the Poster Formerly Known as Phun.Gus Pharaoh.
Each year millions… well… hundreds of thousands… well… several hundred… well… several dozen… well… at least two or three of you await the annual release of my AMAZING year-end countdown. I don’t blame you; it’s like one of those swanky European fashion shows except without the fashion and not in Europe… so basically nothing like a European fashion show, but I digress.
This year, once again, my thread title gives an important clue to the song that sits on top of the chart. Well, technically, it sits on the bottom of the chart, too, as it’s a one-position chart. Matt might appreciate that my one-position chart is vers, but I don’t know. He most definitely doesn’t appreciate only one position; that much I am sure of. Am I digressing again?
You know, years ago I read that the music you like most at age 14 is the music that shapes what you prefer to listen to for the rest of your life. I don’t know if that’s true for everyone, but it sure rings true for me. I was a child of the disco era, Babies. I was 14 in 1979, when we had “Bad Girls” and “Knock on Wood” and “Good Times” and “I Was Made for Dancin’” and “YMCA” and “Makin’ It” and “Enough Is Enough” and “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough” and “Shake Your Groove Thing” and “He’s the Greatest Dancer” and "Let Me Take You Dancing" and “Born to Be Alive,” and on and on and on. To this day, dance music is my jam! Therefore, it is with great excitement that I’m getting ready to reveal a dancetastic floor-filler that has turned out to be my #1 track of 2022!
As I mentioned above, I gave you a clue with the incredibly enticing title to this thread… with the key word being… TINY! (Alanis just pointed out that I put “tiny” in ALL CAPS. Yes, Hunchile, it is ironic.) So… did I ever think Elton John would have a hit in 2022? Hell no. Then again, would I have imagined that he would have a hit in 2021 and then would follow it up with another hit in 2022? Double hell no. Not even Churrr managed to follow up “Believe” with another pop hit… yet Sir Elton took this gem to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022 after having placed "Cold Heart" at #7 just last year. Talk about a come back!
And the first time I heard this ditty, I did a gay boy pearl-clutching that I hadn’t done since I saw Matt ’s video wherein he was singing “Call Me Maybe” while shirtless. Yes, it is THAT good. To know that Sir Elton also included the recently-freed (from conservatorship) Britney Spears on this ditty made it gay-boy heaven… total ear candy and something that makes my ass shake even when I’m driving much less twerking at the club. (Sorry, JessieLou . I know you didn’t want to have to imagine that.) So… where does “tiny” come into play? Well, unless you are an absolute cave dweller, you would know that “Tiny Dancer” by Sir Elton provided the chorus of the ditty “Hold Me Closer.” And there it is. My #1 of 2022.
Now, keep your tiny feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. And don’t forget to contribute to Alanis’s “Ate EZ Steps” foundation. Tell them Phun.Gus sent ya. Happy Holidaze to you, mes amis! And a happy and healthy 2023 to you and yours! Live large (not tiny). Matt doesn’t like tiny. I’ll see myself out.
